Catalina Mac Mail not scrolling

Certain messages in my Mail app won't scroll down via trackpad! They scroll up fine, and I can scroll them down if I use the arrow keys, but it's aggravating as all get-out! I think I saw somewhere that this might be a known issue in Catalina - has anyone found a fix for it? I recently did a clean reinstall of the OS for other reasons, and the problem has not gone away. I can't tell what the difference is between the messages that scroll fine and the ones that won't.

To trouble shoot further you can:

—Try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc. Login and test. Reboot and test as caches get rebuilt.

In Safe mode third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled, it removes malware, etc hampering smooth operation, however a reboot will put it back to normal mode.

This test will tell you if third party interference; extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

To get a good look at your System config. for conflicts or issues, you can download/run this trusted utility https://etrecheck.com

If you need help interpreting the report you can post it here in its entirety in the "Additional Text" box in the editing toolbar below, in your reply.

You can set its preference to "Allow full Disk Access", with this you get a digest of issues from the last 7 days that are saved in your system. _No_ personal information is revealed.

Thanks! Problem continued in Safe Mode. I am pasting the report from etrecheck below. I have found that if I scroll slightly up first, it will then allow the trackpad to do a scroll down, but once I restore to the top of the email, it stops responding to the trackpad scroll again unless I repeat the scroll up again first.

I've been having this problem as well with certain messages on my 2020 MacBook Air. It doesn't happen all the time. Based on comments above, I think it does involve heavily HTML formatted messages. I haven't bothered looking into the Raw Source of the problem messages but may get around to doing that next. However, I have found a workaround for me. I typically use the three column view for mail (Mailboxes | List of Messages (NOT using Column Layout) | Message Preview) and get the no scrolling problem. I toggled Show Side Preview OFF, and the emails that previously would not scroll were able to scroll - so far. YMMV. With that switch toggled off, the Mailboxes are still in the left column, then in the right column the upper part lists the messages and the bottom part shows the Message Previews.
