External USB Keyboard/mouse randomly stops working on New MacBook Air Early 2020 model running Catalina 10.15.4

Subject says it all for the most part. I have an external USB hub connected to one on my Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports on my MacBook Air early 2020 model running Catalina 10.15.4. At random times during the day (2-3 times a day) my Logitech G602 mouse and external Apple Keyboard will stop responding completely and only a reboot will restore functionality. The USB 2.0 HUB under System Information->Hardware->USB completely disappears until the MacBook is reported. Disconnecting/reconnecting the USB Hub does not resolve the issue. I have attached a screen capture of what the USB device looks like normally when things are working correctly. This MacBook Air has replaced a late 2019 MacBook Pro that was running Mojave and then Catalina 10.15.4 for the last 2 days of use. Using the same USB hub and external devices I did not experience this issue with that configuration. Granted I only was running Catalina for 2 days with the MacBook Pro 2019.

Things that I have tried to resolve the issue. Looking for additional suggestions to fix or troubleshoot the issue. I feel that my new MacBook Air is a big paperweight at this point.

  1. Reset NVRAM
  2. Reset SMC
  3. Startup in Safe Mode
  4. Ran Diagnostic check that came back clean.

Yeah, on my MacBook Air 2020 my wireless usb mouse cuts out too when using the 2.4ghz USB A receiver plugged into the USB A ports on my USB-C hub. My workaround is using a USB-A to USB-C adapter, and plugging that into the USB C port on my hub, and for some reason that solves it. But when the receiver is directly plugged into the USB A ports on the hub, it intermittently cuts out.

It's annoying, and the solution I have to live with for the time being is ridiculous. Apple please fix this!

I have a G603 and it only dropped connection once on Windows when I was first pairing it. I later realized the battery it came with was dead. When I put a new battery in it - it was perfect. Been using it for a month now on windows with ZERO ISSUES. Love the mouse! Using it in lightspeed mode all the time.

On the mac, it drops connection just like all other USB 2.0 devices I own. With bluetooth you will not have any problems at all, I assure you, because bluetooth has nothing to do with the USB problems. It's BT, not USB. But I would not be OK with sacrificing the lightspeed mode, which makes this mouse so amazing. 1000hz polling rate wireless is truly a godsent.

Did another test last knight. I have a basic microsoft mouse and a royal kludge wireless keyboard. When connecting both wireless receivers via USB-A to USB-C hubs, the devices become unresponsive within the next 20 minutes. However, if I directly connect the keyboard using a USB-C to USB-C cable (mouse still wireless), there is no issue at all.

You are clearly followed a troubleshooting procedure of proving that the issue is the USB 2.0 controller at the computer's end and not at the mouse end, yet another classic case of proving the root cause.

I'm an new Apple user, joined September 2019, almost a year now.

I switched from android to iphone/ipad , Galaxy watch to Apple watch 5, Windows 10 and Ubuntu to MacOS MPB 15" 2019 (for work) and a new MBP 13" 2020 (This is the only device I experience issues with).

Before this huge transition, I've heard a lot of haters talking about how Apple service experience is the worst , and unfortunately, it didnt take long for me to also experience the same, I went through a lot in order to try and resolve this issue, however Apple insist that all the HUBs are the culprit in this case (works fine on the MBP 15 2019, remember !) , and Apple do not want to take responsibility of their regression in a production product.

If Apple will continue to ignore this issue and will not respond with a solution, I'll be the first to leave.

It speaks volumes that more than 2 months have passed since this issue was first announced by users in reddit threads, and close to a month since many web articles were written about it, popularizing it a bit more. In this time Apple have not issued any statement, or even a small hint that any fix is on the way. Users are left to deal with this on their own, while I hear increasingly more stories of them being told "the usb hubs are the problem" or "the devices are the problem".

This is a blatant lie since many of us have tested all of the hubs with other laptops - including Macbooks from other generations! Old macs, 2016 macs, 2019 macs, and many more in between. The ONLY laptops suffering from this problem are the 2020 models.

Furthermore, I have thoroughly tested for the problem using Apple's own MV adapter and also their USB-A to USB-C adapter. So, their own hub and adapter, which they sell themselves and call official Apple accessories, have the same problem, but somehow magically work on all other mac models. Our devices are also tested - new and old USB 2.0 mice, keyboards, sound cards, external drives, and whatever you can think of. All of them work 100% OK on other laptops and older macbook models, but not on the 2020 models.

The issue is more than clearly a problem of the 2020 models and we, the users, have proven this to ourselves already. The reddit thread with the most activity is getting daily reports from new users finding out about this issue.

So it is very hard to understand how this position can be defended in favor of the brand - considering how expensive the laptops are. How can anyone stand by that kind of attitude towards the customer?

We are left to figure out a solution on our own, that's all I can see so far.

Gladly, there are couple of solutions - using specific OTG adapters and using the CalDigit TB3+ dock (which is very expensive). But this is a workaround! Not a solution! You should be able to use USB hubs -that's how Apple designed their laptops from 2016 until today! Their own USB hubs do not work with the 2020 models. Will they say their own accessories are not supported? Because I can't figure out how that makes any sense.

I have a 2020 MacBook Pro i5. I have had this very issue since I bought my Mac about a week ago. Not even external third party mouse but even the Magic Mouse is going erratic when external USB-c items are connected (This even happens when I connect external hard drives).

This is becoming so frustrating and the computer is simply unusable. I hope things will get corrected with MacOS Big Sur update..

This is very unlikely of APPLE!!!!

After further investigation I find that the USB problems that I am having with my Mac Pro 2019 is a hardware/software issue between my Mac Pro and a USB Type-C Hub that I have been using since I purchased the computer. I do not know if the HUB failed - or if the Mac Pro just stopped talking to it for some software reason... but it no longer works... it does not show up as a device connected to a USB port in System Information.

I replaced it with an USB-A hub that connects to a Mac Pro USB-C through a small USB-A/C adapter - and now everything is operating as before.

My problem is clearly different from others posted here.

I still have a BlueTooth PCB problem with my Mac Pro that needs to be repaired when Apple Service is available in my area.

Chiming in to say I have the same problem on a Macbook Air 2020. I'm using the Anker USB C Hub. I attach a HyperX USB Mouse, a HyperX USB Keyboard, and HDMI to the port. After a few hours, the mouse and keyboard will stop working.

Unplugging the USB-C port and/or the mouse/keyboard doesn't do anything. I have to restart the computer. However, the HDMI still works.

Apple, please issue a statement soon. I am seriously considering refunding my new computer

Ok, so this week I decided to get a Mac Mini (i5, 512GB, 16GB) to use with my eGPU so I can have a more permanent desktop replacement then my MBP 13" (which I am having the same issue as everyone else and posted further up in this thread about). The great thing I liked about the Mac Mini was its size, 4 USB-C's and two USB-A outs...

What I found is that, with the exact same setup - Aukey 7 port USB-A powered hub (which I had issues with using 2.0 keyboard/mouse freezing when attached to the Apple USB-A to USB-C single adapter), I have no issues at all with this setup when plugged directly into the Mac Mini USB-A 3.0 port (Minus the USB to USB-C adapter of course).

So that makes me think there is something with the USB-C ports/chip/software (I am no engineer) as going from USB-A to USB-A seems to work without an issue. Been using it for about 4 days now without a single freeze, drop, hiccup, etc. It "Just works"...

Not sure what this means for the MBP's, as I still having the same issue with my 2020 MBP 13" as everyone else.

Just checking in to clearify that my problem with lost connection with USB A-hub on my MacBook Pro 13 2015 model has been identified. It is not the same problem as you other guys have with your 2020 USB C-models. The problem is related to the Logitech Lightspeed dongle crashed the connection to the whole USB-A hub when the Mac goes in idle mode. Logitech Unifying dongle works fine in the USB-hub. I moved the Lightspeed dongle to the one free USB-A port left on my MacBook. Voila! No more missed connection to the USB-hub.

I have been in contact with apple support for two months and have spent many hours on this problem. I spoke to several support engineers and uploaded gigabytes of logs. I have excluded and replaced all peripherals. It was persistently maintained that it could not be the MacBook.

But today I got a call from Apple. They still believe that there may be something wrong with the Macbook or MacOs. They started an internal investigation after several complaints. They hope an update can fix this problem. Apple support will contact me as soon as more is known or when a software update is available.

I understand that this is not an immediate solution, but that they finally admit that there may be an issue sounds somewhat satisfying for now.

The update certainly looks promising but it's hard to tell if this is a fix for this specific issue with the Catalina USB 2.0 driver. Testing will confirm of course. But, I would agree with others on this thread that this looks to be an Intel USB driver issue. Just another issue to add to the list of issues that Apple has had with Intel. Makes more and more sense why they decided to move away from Intel for their Mac product line. Of course it's that no excuse for taking 10 months to fix a major issue with Catalina that was originally reported back in October 2019.
