External USB Keyboard/mouse randomly stops working on New MacBook Air Early 2020 model running Catalina 10.15.4

Subject says it all for the most part. I have an external USB hub connected to one on my Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports on my MacBook Air early 2020 model running Catalina 10.15.4. At random times during the day (2-3 times a day) my Logitech G602 mouse and external Apple Keyboard will stop responding completely and only a reboot will restore functionality. The USB 2.0 HUB under System Information->Hardware->USB completely disappears until the MacBook is reported. Disconnecting/reconnecting the USB Hub does not resolve the issue. I have attached a screen capture of what the USB device looks like normally when things are working correctly. This MacBook Air has replaced a late 2019 MacBook Pro that was running Mojave and then Catalina 10.15.4 for the last 2 days of use. Using the same USB hub and external devices I did not experience this issue with that configuration. Granted I only was running Catalina for 2 days with the MacBook Pro 2019.

Things that I have tried to resolve the issue. Looking for additional suggestions to fix or troubleshoot the issue. I feel that my new MacBook Air is a big paperweight at this point.

  1. Reset NVRAM
  2. Reset SMC
  3. Startup in Safe Mode
  4. Ran Diagnostic check that came back clean.

Yeah, on my MacBook Air 2020 my wireless usb mouse cuts out too when using the 2.4ghz USB A receiver plugged into the USB A ports on my USB-C hub. My workaround is using a USB-A to USB-C adapter, and plugging that into the USB C port on my hub, and for some reason that solves it. But when the receiver is directly plugged into the USB A ports on the hub, it intermittently cuts out.

It's annoying, and the solution I have to live with for the time being is ridiculous. Apple please fix this!

Same problem here but on a MacBook Pro 13 2015 model with Mac OS Catalina 10.15.5 and use of external USB-hub with power and Logitech Unifier receiver for my Logitech MX wireless keyboard and Logitech dongle for Logitech G603 mouse.

After a pause without using the machine it lose contact with both mouse and keyboard. Only way to fix is restart of Mac.

I am pretty sure this problem arose with the update to 10.15.5.

I have the same problem. Also with a Macbook Pro from 2020. I use an external monitor (Dell u2720q) with internal USB hub. This internal hub freezes USB 2.0 devices, even if they are directly connected to the Macbook itself. It happens very sporadically, depending on usage 2 to 4 times a day.

Reported a problem to Apple support and they were very helpful and communicative at first but are now very quiet and do not respond anymore. I think they suspect that there is a bigger problem, but that they are no longer allowed to talk about it from company policy.

I do not feel Apple is meeting its usual standard of responsiveness to customer experience here. I am sitting at an apple keyboard, and attaching it to an apple device from the simplest of USB-legacy to USB-C converters, as well as a range of docks and hubs, and it is quite clear there is a problem with software. Reading around makes it obvious the problem is widespread, and affects anyone whose hub or converter sends USB-2 into the USB-C endpoint. If your hub or device up-lifts the USB-2 into USB-C its fine, and this may explain why mixed-mode devices such as display port and other technologies in the dock work fine, when the mouse and keyboard do not: they are being "passed through" as-is.

The lack of respect inherent in asking us to repeat warranty call debug paths up to and including re-install is simply unacceptable. You should be publishing a public statement "there is a bug in the USB-2 implementation" and let us move on.

Butterfly keyboard all over again. Do you not learn?

Same issue here with the 2020 MacBook Pro 4 thunderbolt. Just came off the official chat support and they have told me I should get the MacBook checked up for USB issues, even after sharing links to this thread. I connected 3 types of dongles and mouse, keyboard and audio interface disconnect randomly - most importantly - during recordings! Hope a software fix will be deployed soon...

Same issue here. Scores of users reporting the same issue across social media. Well reported now in the press. Try typing "macbook pro usb issue" into Google News.

My first Mac and since purchase I cannot use it with my mouse, keyboard or Sony DAC because of this issue. They conk out randomly and only a restart fixes the problem.

I suspect it's an Intel driver issue but Apple better say something soon or I'm returning.

I am having the same issue as all here mention. This is the most recent 2020 macbook air and I have had the issue using both an Apple USB C adapter and a 3rd party adapter. It is specifically the mouse that stops working.

This is not an adapter issue (or if so then apple adapters have the same problem) and likely requires an update from Apple to fix. Please address this.

Ok so an update for my system using the USB-C to USB-A Adapter directly from Apple.com, as was suggested by a very well documented Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/gp5b1z/usb_20_issues_on_new_macbook_pro_13_2020/) post about this issue.

I have an Aukey Powered USB 3.0 10 port HUB connected to the Apple USB-C to USB-A adapter and it will still randomly switch off my USB 2.0 devices, the USB 3.x devices appear to still be working correctly just the keyboard/mouse stop working (only USB 2.0 devices connected) but the two SSD drives connected (Both USB 3.0) are still active and time machine still works (using one of the connected USB 3.0 SSD's) so either they changed the design of the USB-C adapter and no longer a terminating proxy USB adapter or the issue is something other then what the Reddit post believes the issue is.

I have a (very basic) wired Microsoft Mouse that I am using on my new MacPro because there is a problem with my BT/WiFi card - and I cannot get repaired due to pandemic limitations on Apple service.

In any case - the wired mouse has been working for several months. I recently updated to 10.15.5 and now this mouse is only intermittently recognized when connected to USB-A (I have a USB-C/TB expansion connected to one of the top USB-C ports) either to a USB-A hub (which has been working for months and continues to work with other USB-A devices) or directly to USB-A on the expander.

The wired MS mouse IS recognized who I connect the mouse through a USB-A/C adapter to another of the top USB-C ports.

My Magic Keyboard continues to work through the USB-A hub -> expander/

I hope this helps.

This problem is definitely related to newer Macs.

I have a USB-c hub that was working well up until a couple days ago on a Mac Pro Late-2019

No it does not show up on the system report - and does not work.

When I take that same hub and connect to a 2019 MacBook Pro, with USB-c then it does show up on the system report.

This the 2016 MacBook report. The Mac Pro Late 2019 was posted earlier

I have been in contact with apple support for two months and have spent many hours on this problem. I spoke to several support engineers and uploaded gigabytes of logs. I have excluded and replaced all peripherals. It was persistently maintained that it could not be the MacBook.

But today I got a call from Apple. They still believe that there may be something wrong with the Macbook or MacOs. They started an internal investigation after several complaints. They hope an update can fix this problem. Apple support will contact me as soon as more is known or when a software update is available.

I understand that this is not an immediate solution, but that they finally admit that there may be an issue sounds somewhat satisfying for now.

10.15.6 might have been an improvement but did definitely not fix everything. The keyboard and mouse seem to be rather stable via the dock and the ethernet adapter of the USB-C dock has been working smoothly lately.

However my Akasa Elite X10 USB 3 hub connected to a computer's USB C port with a simple adapter disconnected just like before. It seems to be more stable via my USB C dock but still had another glitch and my drives unmounted for a second raising notifications about unsafe unmount. The hub was apparently immediately automatically reconnected.

A wireless dongle for the mouse does not work when connected to a computer's USB-C port directly with an adapter. Not sure why or if it even should but I think it should.

My Focusrite Interface is still not working but it might be a bug in their software. Who knows.

Not sure if this is the same problem, but I have had a Mini 2018 for about a year and using USB hubs has been a nightmare since day one. For months I would get a kernel panic every time the machine went to sleep if the hub was connected. I tried 3 high quality hubs - always the same result. Apple replaced the logic board in my machine - and that failed to fix it. Finally after a year the latest Catalina update has fixed the kernel panics. But now my keyboard and mouse don't work after sleep (if they are plugged into a hub). I miss the days when my Mac "just worked". I feel like I'm back to using a Performa (remember the bomb icon?).
