External USB Keyboard/mouse randomly stops working on New MacBook Air Early 2020 model running Catalina 10.15.4

Subject says it all for the most part. I have an external USB hub connected to one on my Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports on my MacBook Air early 2020 model running Catalina 10.15.4. At random times during the day (2-3 times a day) my Logitech G602 mouse and external Apple Keyboard will stop responding completely and only a reboot will restore functionality. The USB 2.0 HUB under System Information->Hardware->USB completely disappears until the MacBook is reported. Disconnecting/reconnecting the USB Hub does not resolve the issue. I have attached a screen capture of what the USB device looks like normally when things are working correctly. This MacBook Air has replaced a late 2019 MacBook Pro that was running Mojave and then Catalina 10.15.4 for the last 2 days of use. Using the same USB hub and external devices I did not experience this issue with that configuration. Granted I only was running Catalina for 2 days with the MacBook Pro 2019.

Things that I have tried to resolve the issue. Looking for additional suggestions to fix or troubleshoot the issue. I feel that my new MacBook Air is a big paperweight at this point.

  1. Reset NVRAM
  2. Reset SMC
  3. Startup in Safe Mode
  4. Ran Diagnostic check that came back clean.

Yeah, on my MacBook Air 2020 my wireless usb mouse cuts out too when using the 2.4ghz USB A receiver plugged into the USB A ports on my USB-C hub. My workaround is using a USB-A to USB-C adapter, and plugging that into the USB C port on my hub, and for some reason that solves it. But when the receiver is directly plugged into the USB A ports on the hub, it intermittently cuts out.

It's annoying, and the solution I have to live with for the time being is ridiculous. Apple please fix this!

on a recent support call with applecare the person told me that he had never heard of it before and told me to reset vram, smc, etc. it obviously didn’t work and im still losing my external usb2 g502se and keyboard at random times for no apparent reason.

apple should have found this bug before releasing these devices. since they apparently didn’t, they need to issue a statement confirming this bug so users don’t waste anymore time or money troubleshooting this

I am having the same issue as others. My setup is USB-C Adapter from Mokin going to USB-A 3.0 Hub from Aukey that has USB 2.0 Keyboard, Mouse, USB 3.0 SSD, and USB Audio. I also am using an eGPU from Razer Core with AMD RX 580 that is having no issues itself. Both devices are plugged into the right two USB-C Ports on the 2020 Macbook Pro 13" 2.0Ghz i5.

What happens is just randomly stops responding to the USB-C to USB-A adapter.. if I unplug the hub and back in that does not reset the response BUT if I unplug the USB-C adapter from the MBP and plug it back in everything seems to reset and become responsive again. When it does not unresponsive all things connected stop working including the Audio on the Hub. I might try the Apple USB-C to USB-A adapter and see if that fixes the issue. This just happens randomly.. I can go on for hours without an issue and then it just happens. As soon as I unplug and plug back in the USB-C adapter it all works again but unplugging the HUB, either power and/or USB, does not fix the issue.

EDIT/UPDATE: I just ordered the Apple USB-C to USB adapter and should arrive by Wed (July 3rd) and will update this after I use it for a bit to see if it fixes anything.

Apple now states that my (3 different) USB hubs are inferior and that they cannot guarantee that it will work. I just have to buy the Belkin 4-port USB hub from their website. If the problem still persists, I should call again. The hub on their website has a delivery time of 3 to 4 months, which you can also purchase via Amazon.

I have little faith in it, but I'm going to try it. Strangely enough, I haven't had an interruption in USB for a few days, while nothing has changed. I do notice that the USB devices are classified differently in the system overview.

That's ridiculous. One of the hubs that I've had the problem with is their own USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. They are literally throwing sand in your eyes.

And they likely made it that much worse by making you buy another USB hub, which could also have the problem.

I've seen some reports from people that the issue stopped happening, though.

I feel so stupid for giving my laptop to an 'authorized service' - they damaged the corpus of the laptop and refuse to replace it. It's been such a negative experience overall for me.

Same issue here. Scores of users reporting the same issue across social media. Well reported now in the press. Try typing "macbook pro usb issue" into Google News.

My first Mac and since purchase I cannot use it with my mouse, keyboard or Sony DAC because of this issue. They conk out randomly and only a restart fixes the problem.

I suspect it's an Intel driver issue but Apple better say something soon or I'm returning.

The problem happens way less often since the weekend. Currently I have one of those 2-USB-c hubs attached to the laptop with an HDMI cable and two wireless receivers (keyboard+mouse) plus an audio interface connected on another port (using a usb-c to usb-a adapter) and it only stopped working once this morning.

So for me the issue is not entirely solved but it is not as bad as it was last week. I hope it gets properly fixed soon.

I am having the same issue as all here mention. This is the most recent 2020 macbook air and I have had the issue using both an Apple USB C adapter and a 3rd party adapter. It is specifically the mouse that stops working.

This is not an adapter issue (or if so then apple adapters have the same problem) and likely requires an update from Apple to fix. Please address this.

Ok so an update for my system using the USB-C to USB-A Adapter directly from Apple.com, as was suggested by a very well documented Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/gp5b1z/usb_20_issues_on_new_macbook_pro_13_2020/) post about this issue.

I have an Aukey Powered USB 3.0 10 port HUB connected to the Apple USB-C to USB-A adapter and it will still randomly switch off my USB 2.0 devices, the USB 3.x devices appear to still be working correctly just the keyboard/mouse stop working (only USB 2.0 devices connected) but the two SSD drives connected (Both USB 3.0) are still active and time machine still works (using one of the connected USB 3.0 SSD's) so either they changed the design of the USB-C adapter and no longer a terminating proxy USB adapter or the issue is something other then what the Reddit post believes the issue is.

Same issue here. New MacBook Air 2020, mostly maxed-out specs except the hard drive is only 1 TB.

I have an Anker 4-port USB-normal to USB-C hub that I connect through my apple Multiport AV adapter. I have 2 monitors plugged in: one via the multiport adapter, one via the other USB-C port.

I have a keyboard, mouse, and USB audio device plugged into the hub.

On my 2019 MacBook Pro everything works with this setup. When I swap in the 2020 MacBook Air, the mouse, keyboard, and audio all suffer random frequent disconnects.

I have the latest version of Catalina on both. I also have a Ph.D. in computer science. Not like it really matters, but I promise you this isn't "user error". I've tried the various reset steps aside from reinstalling the OS since that's clearly not a reasonable fix and it hasn't helped anyone else on these threads. The MacBook Air is super new as well.

Really wish Apple would make a public statement about this instead of wasting everyone's time. USB 2 is broken on these 2020 devices and needs to be fixed.

Aight guys this is getting atrocious. Still using my anker hub to connect a keyboard, mouse, and monitor to my 2020 macbook pro. Now it lasts about 10 minutes on average before cutting out. When I disconnect the hub about half the time the macbook pro acts as if the screen is still being shared with the monitor, but won't resume sharing when I replug in the hub. This forces me to restart the pro to get everything back to normal. For a $1800 piece of tech this incredibly inconvenient and interrupts me every ten minutes (not great when you are trying to zoom call into work and while youre typing what someone is saying suddenly everything seizes up). I have always loved my apple products but this is just horrible for my view on their reputation (like at least acknowledge the problem and that youre working on it, come on). Coincidently just happened to me again while writing this, so now I'm off to restart my computer for the 5th time today...

Just an update, during the last week I've been connecting everything via single USB-A to USB-C adapters and/or one of those hubs that uses two USB-C ports on the laptop without any problems (a generic one bough from amazon). Even with high energy demanding devices (a mechanical keyboard, an audio interface and midi controllers).

However, when using a UGREEN USB hub/switch (4 to 2 USB-C ports) it freezes after a few minutes.

I have a (very basic) wired Microsoft Mouse that I am using on my new MacPro because there is a problem with my BT/WiFi card - and I cannot get repaired due to pandemic limitations on Apple service.

In any case - the wired mouse has been working for several months. I recently updated to 10.15.5 and now this mouse is only intermittently recognized when connected to USB-A (I have a USB-C/TB expansion connected to one of the top USB-C ports) either to a USB-A hub (which has been working for months and continues to work with other USB-A devices) or directly to USB-A on the expander.

The wired MS mouse IS recognized who I connect the mouse through a USB-A/C adapter to another of the top USB-C ports.

My Magic Keyboard continues to work through the USB-A hub -> expander/

I hope this helps.

Over the last few days I have found the "freezing" to happen more frequently. I have also found that if I unplug all USB devices and plug them back in after 5 mins the "frozen" devices will work again. However doing that seems to mean they will freeze again much quicker.

A reboot normally means I wont experience the dreaded "freeze" again that day.

If I do an SMC reset (hold down shift, ctrl, option and power button) I might not even get the "freeze" that day

All very frustrating

Jeffery Snell I'm not clear what setup you have at the moment thats working, do you think you could upload some pictures or amazon links or something?
