TV volume control from iPhone/remote app/Home app
Hello all.
I am trying to get my Apple TV to control the TV’s volume via the HDMI-CEC, not via the Physical remote’s IR. I have found quite a lack of detail on the feature and the settings required. So decided I must ask here.
I have never had this feature working in the past and always thought I was an issue because my TV was old. I’ve now got a more modern TV, 2019 model with 4K and higher speed HDMI inputs. However the feature is still not working.
Regular HDMI-CEC functions like input change, higher chroma, 4K etc works. (This was also working with the old hardware)
I am not too sure where the issue lies.
I have tried two different HDMI cables:

https://www.apple.com/shop/product/HLL52ZM/A/belkin-ultrahd-4k-8k-hdmi-cable-2m
The TV’s “enhanced HDMI” ports are 2 and 3 (I have tried both ports, Port 3 is HDMI ARC)
Model number X80G https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/support/articles/00194995
When I first turn the TV on via the app, my setting [Remotes and Devices > Volume control] gets set to auto via HDMI, but is greyed out .
When I use the rocker volume controls on the app, the Apple TV’s led flashes to indicate it is receiving the Command. But nothing happens with the volume.
If I use the physical remote at any point, the [Remotes and Devices > Volume control] get set to “auto via IR“.
I only have two options there anyways when I can actually get into that setting, “auto” and “tv via IR”.
From everything I can see all the required setting are on for the Sony TV, (some were not on by default)
Song have said that since this is a feature with the Apple TV that I need to contact them. They never gave me a definitive answer on whether the TV can actually receive these inputs.
is this only a feature that works with an audio receiver inline of the Apple TV and TV?
What more can I try? And what features need to align in order to have this feature working?
Many thanks in advance.
