Top Gun 4k not in Dolby Atmos sound?

The US iTunes version of Spies in Disguise is labeled as Dolby Atmos. I haven’t watched it yet, but now I may just have to test it to confirm if it is indeed Atmos.

Where does it say 4K?

On the description.

The Apple TV up scales everything to 4K so my tv indicates 4K no matter what. It does stay in sdr mode for sdr movies though and top gun does switch my tv to hdr mode.

Will Apple give us some idea when Top Gun will be available in Dolby atmos?

I looked on both apps while playing by doing what you described and both of mine say 4K vision.

Just be glad you don’t have to watch the iTunes UK version. There are two versions on Apple TV, and neither is 4K (yet).

If you access it via the Movies app, it appears to be the old transfer (old Paramount intro). This version plays as HD Dolby Vision. Maybe it's fake DV (SDR in a DV container), as I can't see how the old transfer would have been properly encoded with DV.

If you instead access it via the Apple TV app, it seems to be the new transfer (new Paramount intro). This version plays as HD SDR.

I do know about the existing issue where some 4K films are streaming in HD due to lockdown restrictions, but this seems to be a different problem.

Hopefully this will all be corrected in the next few days and isn't a common occurrence. I don't fancy having to check every film in both apps to find out which one is the best version to watch.

4k on iTunes was about 24 hours later than everyone else. (Vudu, Fandango Now) My guess is it will be streaming in Atmos by the time the blu ray with the digital redemption is released which is on Tuesday May 19th.

I keep checking everyday and holding off on watching it until it is available.

Have you signed up for Movies Anywhere? Usually if you link your iTunes and Vudu accounts, you get access to movies purchased across services. So in this case, if you bought Top Gun in iTunes, you’ll have access to the Vudu, Amazon, and Fandango versions as well.

First paramount does not work with movies anywhere. Second unless you just bought the 4K version last week when it came out you would only officially own the hd version and vudu doesn’t give you the free 4K upgrade like iTunes does so you would only have it in hd on vudu.

Is that in the iTunes movies app? When I tried it the other day it was kicking into Dolby Vision mode, but it was the old film transfer with the old Paramount intro.

Try it in the Apple TV app, then see what you get. I get the new transfer with the new Paramount intro but no Dolby Vision.

There are two different versions!

Yes the Apple TV app on the Apple TV - the same app used to access Apple TV+.

The old Paramount logo is the old transfer. The new transfer has a new Paramount 100 Years intro. The film’s picture quality is noticeably different too.

It may well go into Dolby Vision mode, but I can’t see how it can be real DV when the old transfer has never been mastered in DV.

Paramount is not part of MoviesAnywhere. You have to choose between iTunes or Vudu for Top Gun and War of the Worlds. That’s why it’s frustrating for folks who prefer iTunes over Vudu.

To make matters worse, Dolby themselves promoted Top Gun on Apple in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on social media only to have up back track and say there is a delay with Atmos.
