Mouse Keys keep resetting by themselves?

I now know that the Magic Keyboard doesn't work if Mouse Keys are checked. I know how to access that screen to uncheck the box to allow me to enter my name at login. However, it keeps happening. Each time I access the Mouse Keys screen, the field is checked again. So can anyone tell me why? Is there something in the login process which resets the Mouse Keys to be on?

My guess is there may be something going on with what has been installed on the computer. I'd suggest providing us with an EtreCheck report and we can look for anything obvious that may cause that problem. Please follow the instructions below.

Please navigate to the Mac App Store and download the free version of EtreCheck OR please click www.EtreCheck.com where you will find the app. Once you have downloaded the free app and created the report please post it as your reply to this message. In order to post it, please use the following link for more detailed instructions on how to correctly include the results:

We can then look for obvious issues that may be causing your problem.

I don't see any of the usual suspects in the report. I'd try the following in order (if you've already tried it then skip and move to the next one)

1 - reset NVRAM: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

2 - reset the SMC: How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

3 - boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down) and run Disk Utility to repair the drive.

4 - boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down) and reinstall the system.

To remove a configuration profile in macOS:

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences....
  2. From the View menu in System Preferences, select Profiles.Note:
  3. Profiles won't be visible until you have at least one profile installed.
  4. Select the profile you want to remove, and then press the - (minus) button. Click Remove to remove the profile.

Opened a new account; logged out of mine; tried to login to new account; couldn't as keyboard not typing all the letters. Pressed Option Command F5, Mouse Keys field checked and Voice was speaking even though VoiceOver was unchecked. I unchecked "Mouse Keys" and I was allowed to login to new account.

Now the system is asking me to set up the new account which I don't want to do seeing as how I'm going to delete it as soon as I can. I logged out (eventually) from the new account. Clicked to log back in as me and it wouldn't let me until I had pressed good old Option Command F5 again.

I'll try starting it in Safe Mode later.

Just one thing, whilst Apple Support was trying to resolve a different issue last month, one of their team asked me to use the arrow buttons on the bottom right corner on the keyboard? Could that have changed something - I think this current pain in the neck has only been happening since the reinstallation done last month by Apple Support.

Download and run Etrecheck. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and use the Add Text button to include the report in your reply. How to use the Add Text Feature When Posting Large Amounts of Text, i.e. an Etrecheck Report

IMPORTANT:

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck in the Etrecheck's Privacy preference pane so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine what might be causing the problem.

Also any difference while in Safe Mode?
