iPad Pro Magic Keyboard trackpad suddenly stopped working.

The keyboard and trackpad were working fine up until a couple of hours ago. I put the iPad to charge (already in the Magic Keyboard case) and then I picked it up recently to use. All of a sudden the trackpad wasn’t responding. There was no mouse on the screen. There is no response on the screen when I click on the trackpad. The keys on the keyboard itself were working fine and were responsive, but it’s just the trackpad that isn’t working. I tried hard-resetting and soft-resetting my iPad, as well as cleaning the smart connectors on both the keyboard and the iPad, still no changed result.

I had the same problem, 2018 iPad Pro running 13.5.1 with the Magic Keyboard. Removing the both the iPad and the USB-C power cord from the keyboard (i.e. no power going to the Magic Keyboard from any source) seems to reset things enough to get it to start working again. I’ve had to do this twice in the past week, including just now.

I too have the same problem, typically if I leave the iPad Pro 11 on the magnetic mount for a number of hours it seems to cause the trackpad to stop responding - but the keyboard works as normal. Taking the iPad off the mount and un-connecting the charger cable, and then re-connect the cable and re-mount the iPad, everything works as normal. Given time it will revert to the unresponsive trackpad. Very frustrating - especially considered the high price.

Yes, I can confirm as well, after upgrading to 14.2 the problem continues. Removing power then remounting the iPad - however that is a "workaround" but not a solution, especially for the price of the keyboard it needs to be fixed.. Two weeks ago I received a replacement keyboard after troubleshooting with Apple TechSupport - however the problem continues with the replacement. I have the latest iPad Pro 11 and it tends to happen when I leave the iPad mounted to the keyboard for several hours. I consider this to be an ongoing bug either with firmware, hardware, or software.

Fortunately if you unplug it and disconnect the iPad from it simultaneously, it is a guaranteed fix. It is still disappointing that this has to be done. Fortunately, also, I have not experienced this issue since last week. I had to forego a Genius Bar appointment, today, because I did not have the means to back up my iPad. My PC for some reason refuses to download iTunes. I am hoping they will just fix this issue with an update, considering it is a software issue and not a hardware issue.

I never had this problem with my first Magic Keyboard which is still working without incident.

The newer one I got this month (November 2020) has happened 3 times already.

The reset worked, and it might be related to plugging the USB-C to the charge connector in the hinge instead of the iPad itself, or it might be a quality control issue with more recently manufactured units.

It’s annoying but at least the fix works. Hope a software remedy is successful.

I had the same issue. I removed my 2018 IPad Pro running 14.2 from the Magic Keyboard and turned the Bluetooth for 30 seconds. Then i turned the Bluetooth back on and placed the iPad on the magic keyboard and the issued seemed to be fixed. Granted this has only happened to me once so i don’t know if this is a long term fix. I am not sure what might be causing the trackpad to loose connection while the rest of the IPad Pro Magic Keyboard worked. I connected an external Magic Mouse just to make sure it wasn’t the iPad messing up. Hopefully Apple will take a look at this and fix it with an update.

My iPad Pro (2nd Gen) has the latest update 14.2. The problem with the trackpad happens less frequently now but it still happens. During the summer and fall it used to be about every other day, now its about once every 3-5 days. So better but still not acceptable. The workaround works [unplug + remount the iPad], but we shouldn't have to do a workaround ongoing. As a side - Apple replaced my magic keyboard for this issue but the new one continues to have the problem but less frequently.

I’m facing the similar issue, I have got the new apple magic keyboard on 07 Dec 2020, on very next day I started noticing the trackpad issue. For me it’s mainly when I use two fingers for scrolling. I face this issue in Home Screen (swiping between the pages), safari browser and all the apps (settings page as well).

Is it something software issue or I should replace my iPad magic keyboard?

iPad Pro 12.9 (2020) running 14.3, and it just happened after this update, today. Thanks to yr suggestion, unplugging & remounting - this solved the issue.

My concern / and question is - is there an underlying hardware issue and will it be progressively degrading to the point of failure (since we click that thing often) or is it a software bug? I know its a tough question to tackle, but opinions?

Also I am not sure if a visit to Apple Genius is now necessary anymore (since some folks here have commented that it continues to happen even with replaced Magic Keyboard).

If the trackpad stops working (but the keyboard works). I unplug the power cable, demount the iPad and then immediately replug the power cable in and then remount the iPad and then the trackpad works again. I haven't had to wait for a while to get it to work. However, so far with 14.3 it seems to work for a day or two or three, and then it stops working, and I have to reset it again.

Is your symptom the same, occasionally the trackpad stops working? Or do you have other symptoms. For example: Does your keyboard continues to work even if the trackpad does not? Or do you have different symptoms?

I just encountered the same problem. Bought the keyboard on January 2, 2021 for my IPad Pro 11 2018. Have the latest system upgrade. Followed the advice on this thread and unplugged, shut down, restarted, put the ipad back on the keyboard. I have not yet powered back on via the keyboard. This simply should not be happening. I am still within the Amazon return period. 300.00 for a device like this from apple should not have this issue.
