Airpods and other headphone mics not working on macbook air but OK on iPhone

My airpod2 and my Bose headphones microphone don’t work with my new Macbook Air when using Facetime or Zoom - no one can hear me, only crackles. Both headphones work perfectly with iPhone 11Pro and iPad.

I would try resetting the AirPods except they work fine with iPad and iPhone and the Bose headphones have the same problem with the MacBook Air but work fine with the iPad or iPhone. Looks like it's a MacBook Air problem, I think. Just can't find what it is.
