Macbook pro 13" (2020) USB c to USB hub get randomly disconnect

I have a USB hub plugged to my Macbook pro.

On this hub I have only a mac keyboard and logitech mouse.

It get disconnected randomly after a few hour of use.

The hub use a AC adapter so problem is not coming from the lack of power...

I have also tried to reset the SMC but nothing changed.

The strange thing is: the hub don't disconnect with my old mac mini (2012) who not using usb-c

I think the plexing between usb-c and usb 2.0 or 3.0 get messed by something.

Probably the USB C interface on the Macbook pro itself...

Please fix it!

Hi red225,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today with a USB hub that is disconnecting. It sounds like this is an older third-party USB hub and you're using a USB-C adapter.

Since it works with an older MacBook Pro, it just may not be compatible with the new one and an adapter. You can verify this by testing the hub inside a new user account: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. If it disconnects there, the only solution may be to purchase an updated USB-C hub. But you can also check with the manufacturer to see if they have any suggestions.

Have a great weekend!

This is interesting

I have the same issues with the 13" 2020 in combination with a build-in hub from my Dell monitor, but also with other hubs like a Hyperdrive 6-in-1 and a Techole 3-in-1 usb-hub/ethernet combi.

My 'old' 2017 MacBook 12" have no issues with this setup.

I kindly ask you to open a support case at Apple Support. I did it for all our 5 MacBook Pro 16" showing them that all our SSD hubs have these USB bus errors.

I can still say there is something strange going on in software. My SSDs habe an integrated HUB with a 3.1 Gen 2 VIA VL-822 Chip.

  1. The SSD devices work with same MacOS on 15" 2019 model.
  2. The SSD devices work with Windows 10 on same machine.
  3. The SSD devices work if I connect an older VIA VL-817 USB 3.1 Gen1 Hub in between MacBook and the SSD device.

They need data reports and information that they will query in a remote session. Tell them you insist on a data analysis of this bug so they don't block you in frontline. I insisted on a escalation as soon as I explained the things I found out. But I had to explain 2 times.

I have the same issue. Have tried 3 different hubs and all of them disconnect after a little bit of time. I am using the connection for my DAS Keyboard, Logitech Wireless Mouse and Logitech Wireless headset. I am going to send this MBP back if it isnt fixed soon, as not being able to use anything USB is a nightmare.

I've the exact same issue with my new Macbook Pro (13"; 2020; i5; 16Gb RAM; etc.). I've had it less than a week now and have had multiple dropouts from a brand new Satechi hub (only my USB 2.0 keyboard) and from a USB 2.0 DAC plugged directly into the machine (new USB C to USB B cable). I can get the hub to reconnect if I unplug and plug it back in again, but the DAC connection doesn't respond to connector cycling and instead requires a full reboot. This is beginning to look a lot like the new batch of machines have a real compatibility issue with USB 2.0 devices. I hope this is a software fix instead of a chipset snafu.

PLEASE FIX THIS, APPLE.

I also have the same issue, at first I thought it was my keyboard and mouse problem. But after I checked it at 'about this mac > system report > USB' , the USB C hub did not appear. So I assume that it is either my MacBook Pro 2020 13" problem or my USB C hub problem. Since you all also have the same issue, so I don't think it is the USB C hub issue then.

Yup this has been happening to me too. Seems to be a mounting problem in the community from other threads I've found about it. Anyone know how to get apple to take this complain seriously, getting tired of my mouse disconnecting 4-5 times during a gaming session.

What connectors are you using? I have a usb-c -> USB 3.0 and it still is doing the same thing. I really don’t want to order a $200+ TB3 dock if I can avoid it considering g I’ve bought 3 different USB-C hubs and 2 different single adapters with no luck. If this isn’t solved in a few weeks I’m sending this back and building a hackintosh. The hackintosh devs/community fix MacOS bugs faster than the Apple dev team tbh.

Hi,

I bought yesterday a MacBook Air 2020 and I am facing the USB dropout issue as well. On a quick research it seems that the problem is very common on the 2020 devices and I Apple is yet to provide a feedback on it. There is a lot of people in the same boat.

For what its worth I am also having the same issue. Been through two brand new USB C hubs, both of which stop working after a period of time. Restart os the only way I am able to remedy, although it just happens again in time. Very frustrating. Please prioritize fix!

Same problem here. Our company just bought 2 13-inch MacBook Pro 2020 (4 TB3 ports), both have this problem.

When a keyboard (controller by Sonix) are connected through a TB to USB hub, the USB feature of the whole machine freezes. That is, all USB devices, even connected through different USB hubs (through different TB ports of course), stop working at the same time. And unplugging and re-plug some of them does not work, either.

The only solution is to unplug all hubs at the same time, and re-plug.

Hi

I have the same spec 2020 Macbook Pro and am also facing this issue. It occurs with all usb c devices not just the hub. It has occurred on the satechi hub, android tablets, logitech mouse and das keyboard.

This seems to be an issue with the USB drivers.

Thank you

I have the same problem. OP: it's not you. All Macbook 2020 laptops have this bug. See this article for more info:

Also note that these "Roundup" articles have added a warning in the "Issues" section about 2020 Macbook USB problems:
