After update to iOS 13.5.1 battery drain is ridiculous and phone overheats

Ever since updating to iOS 13.5.1, my phone's battery drain is ridiculous. Previously, from the time I removed my phone from the charger at 6:30 AM until I put it back on the charger at 11:00 PM, my battery would drain to around 80%. Now, it's at 80% by 8:30 AM. The device is also hot all the time. Clearly, something is wrong with this update, and it needs to be fixed.

Hi Bella_1954

Sadly some updates do cause iPhones to work harder [generating heat], they usually settle down after a few recharge/restart cycles.

If you contact Apple Support they can diagnose any battery issues or whatever.

Turning off Push and changing to Fetch Manually helps [see SravanKrA's tips above] as well as turning off Background App Refresh.

Check Settings>Battery to see what is using the most power and adjust that app if you can. If you know an app using the most power is one you close properly then definitely do a Force Restart - this clears up any legacy issues that have carried over from before the update [if you left a lot of apps 'open' when you update, this can happen] -

Force Restart: In quick succession: Briefly press & release the Up Volume, then briefly press & release the Down Volume, then press and HOLD DOWN the Power Button, and keep it held as the screen shows the power off slider, still keeping the Power Button held while the screen goes dark and keep it held until the Apple logo appears, then release it. The phone will restart, hopefully a lot cleaner than before.

best of luck.

iPhone is back to normal. Thank you Carl!

1 -Back up iPhone

2 - Restore iPhone (this is back to factory settings). My phone got a bit warm during this process, but never hot.

Once hello appears on iPhone, you can unplug phone and use phone for an hour. If the phone does not get hot, proceed to step three.

3 - Restore backup. I let all the apps download and waited an hour before I began using different apps. My phone did get a tad warm during this process but never hot like before.

Carl explained to me that when the latest software was installed on 29 June, it appears to be a bad batch. If after step 2, my phone was still hot, he told me to restore again. Fortunately, it worked the first time. If after you restore the back-up and your phone gets hot it is a data issue and it is a trial and error method to figure out which app is causing the problem.

When I was on the call with Carl, he felt it was a software issue right from the start due to the phone being hot and the battery health is 100%. He ran a diagnostic check on the hardware remotely and it came back that the hardware was fine. For me it was worth the 45 minute wait to get to an advisor and I did asked to be bumped to a more senior advisor.

My phone is back to normal and I hope this helps solve your problem.

Protect & Prolong life of your iPhone's Battery:

  1. About the battery usage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch ...
  2. Batteries - Maximising Performance - Apple (IN)
  3. iPhone Battery and Performance

Try some of these options too.

  1. Avoid Screen Mirroring
  2. Put on Low Power Mode
  3. Put Auto Lock On (1 min):- with low power mode it will be 30 Sec
  4. Put Auto Answer Off
  5. Disable Push notifications for apps you do not use often
  6. Keep your iPhone Face down to prevent notifications to light up screen
  7. Enable Auto Brightness:- Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations > Auto-Brightness [Enable]
  8. Manually lower brightness from Control Center
  9. If you Want to watch continuous Video. Stream it on TV or a Monitor
  10. Don't force close apps; Apps which are not on frontend screen are paused by the system to save energy. Apps require more energy to re-launch. Apps which are open in the background use large memory is a myth and quitting them is counterproductive
  11. Location services to be allowed only while using the app
  12. Set your iPhone to fetch email and calendar data from internet less frequently
  13. Turning off Background App Refresh
  14. Charge before it drops below 20-30%
  15. Try connecting to trusted Wifi where ever available in stead of Cellular
  16. Enable Airplane mode in areas with bad cellular and wifi coverage. Your phone keeps trying for reconnection with the missing / weak network. This uses lot of energy
  17. Switch off Wifi & Bluetooth while in Roaming or Not in Range
  18. Enable "Wifi Assist" : Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Data > Wi-Fi Assist [Enable]
  19. Periodically Check your Battery Health (Settings > Battery > Battery Health)

My iPhone 7 purchased April/2019 presented same behavior after I updated to 13.5.1. Prior to that, I never had any problems with phone or battery. Immediately after update, phone demonstrated excessive, expedited battery drain - usually moving from 100% to near 20% within two hour period. This was consistent behavior after 13.5.1 and battery often very hot. I took to BestBuy apple tech who did diagnosis and advised "Green check for battery performance," which was absurd. Then tech tried disconnecting battery from motherboard then back and thought that would cure problem. It did NOT. Next hoop to jump through in this circus act is to surrender phone to apple for further games. I made no adjustments to phone after 13.5.1 update. Consequently, the problem is clearly with the update and apple appears to not want to admit they have a problem with 13.5.1 update. Meanwhile, clients suffer with no remedy. No accountability or responsible remedial action by the company. The norm these days. Sad.

Before updating to the latest iOS 13.5.1 as told on your post what was your earlier iOS version. Then you can look into the iOS changes that has happened between the earlier version on your iPhone and this new version that you have updated now.

This will give you a broader idea of the issue, if it is directly linked to the iOS version or is triggered by something else.

Because iOS 13.5.1 was only for security update, you may probably be carrying a legacy issue from previous iOS versions.
