After update to iOS 13.5.1 battery drain is ridiculous and phone overheats

Ever since updating to iOS 13.5.1, my phone's battery drain is ridiculous. Previously, from the time I removed my phone from the charger at 6:30 AM until I put it back on the charger at 11:00 PM, my battery would drain to around 80%. Now, it's at 80% by 8:30 AM. The device is also hot all the time. Clearly, something is wrong with this update, and it needs to be fixed.

Protect & Prolong life of your iPhone's Battery:

  1. About the battery usage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch ...
  2. Batteries - Maximising Performance - Apple (IN)
  3. iPhone Battery and Performance

Try some of these options too.

  1. Avoid Screen Mirroring
  2. Put on Low Power Mode
  3. Put Auto Lock On (1 min):- with low power mode it will be 30 Sec
  4. Put Auto Answer Off
  5. Disable Push notifications for apps you do not use often
  6. Keep your iPhone Face down to prevent notifications to light up screen
  7. Enable Auto Brightness:- Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations > Auto-Brightness [Enable]
  8. Manually lower brightness from Control Center
  9. If you Want to watch continuous Video. Stream it on TV or a Monitor
  10. Don't force close apps; Apps which are not on frontend screen are paused by the system to save energy. Apps require more energy to re-launch. Apps which are open in the background use large memory is a myth and quitting them is counterproductive
  11. Location services to be allowed only while using the app
  12. Set your iPhone to fetch email and calendar data from internet less frequently
  13. Turning off Background App Refresh
  14. Charge before it drops below 20-30%
  15. Try connecting to trusted Wifi where ever available in stead of Cellular
  16. Enable Airplane mode in areas with bad cellular and wifi coverage. Your phone keeps trying for reconnection with the missing / weak network. This uses lot of energy
  17. Switch off Wifi & Bluetooth while in Roaming or Not in Range
  18. Enable "Wifi Assist" : Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Data > Wi-Fi Assist [Enable]
  19. Periodically Check your Battery Health (Settings > Battery > Battery Health)

Article I read in Forbes:

First spotted by MacRumors, a growing number of iPhone users are reporting severe battery drain problems. It centers on Apple Music and you don’t need to be a subscriber to be affected. The preinstalled app is monopolizing battery resources regardless (even if you delete it) and badly hit iPhones only last a few hours on a full charge. Apple Support is acknowledging the problem, but currently the only workaround it offers is a full factory reset - aka the nuclear option.

07/12 Update: Apple has confirmed to me that it is aware of the problem and is investigating. iOS 13.6 and iPadOS 13.6 were expected to launch last week, so it is unclear whether Apple is trying to make a last minute addition to the code to fix this issue or whether the company can address this remotely. As mentioned below, server side faults are normally fixed quickly but reports are still flooding in across social media with user anger growing over the "insane" and "ridiculous" levels of battery drain. Some are also calling out Apple for "ignoring" the problem- which I can confirm it is not. What makes this more complex is some users are totally unaffected, while those affected include both Apple Music subscribers and non-subscribers across all models of iOS 13-supported iPhones, so there's no clear pattern here. Apple needs to fix this, and soon.

Moreover, the problem seems to affect all supported iPhone models (and some iPads) across multiple versions of iOS, including both iOS 13.6 and iOS 14 betas. And the issue appears to be spreading quickly.

Since the MacRumors report, users have flooded Twitter, jumped on Reddit (1,2,3,4) and mentions of the problem on Apple’s own Support Communities forum has seen one thread grow to 11 pages with more than 500 users saying they have this problem, while another has passed 30 pages at the time of publication with over 1800 users saying they have the problem. Comments on MacRumors’ article also blew up.

If you’d like to diagnose whether your device is affected, navigate to: Settings > Battery > Show Activity. Affected users will see Apple Music background usage is off the scale. Some users have found that doing an iCloud reset helps, others have got usage back to normal by deleting the app but, as mentioned above, for others this makes no difference. Apple Support’s factory reset suggestion also works but should be a last resort.

Haha, I got my iPhone XR to the service center because:

    1. Battery health went 93% in a few months time
    2. Overheating and battery 100% > 20% after 2-3 hours of plain safari and news reading/social

It used to work well.

Now, "support" said both are normal. I laughed my guts out after hearing it.

I have already placed an ad to sell the iPhone. This is not the first time this happened to one of my iPhone devices and this is unacceptable both for a very expensive device and for their support replies as well.

Most probably, I am switching to a different brand. I am so tired of this.

Before updating to the latest iOS 13.5.1 as told on your post what was your earlier iOS version. Then you can look into the iOS changes that has happened between the earlier version on your iPhone and this new version that you have updated now.

This will give you a broader idea of the issue, if it is directly linked to the iOS version or is triggered by something else.

Because iOS 13.5.1 was only for security update, you may probably be carrying a legacy issue from previous iOS versions.

I'm having exactly the same problem. I had this with an earlier update before, and Apple agreed there was a fault and replaced the handset. I'm frustrated that I will most likely have to go down the same route as before, which I shouldn't have to do.

Please could you advise if there is going to be a fix for this soon? It seems that after most updates there are complaints of battery drainage by a large number of people, and customers shouldn't have to experience this every time.

I'm tempted to ditch Apple and follow your advice to be honest. I got a new handset in March and it's dropped from 100% battery health to 97% in 3-4 weeks? It's ridiculous. I don't have the energy to go to my nearest shop (over an hour away) and get it sorted (took 2 trips last time before they finally admitted there was a problem). For it to be happening again now is just silly. A quick Google search of "IOS 13.5.1 battery drain" and it brings up so many results... I don't know how they get away with it

I agree!! Mine is not too far it’s 30 mins away but still with the economy rn... constantly driving there wastes a lot of gas.. I’m no cheapskate but many people are working and I have no business to be wasting my time to drive back and forth to finally have apple realize they have an issue!! Hopefully they get it together and realize there’s an issue 🙄

Very true! You can send off for a repair but then I think you have to pay a deposit for a crumby 5s or whatever they give you. It really is frustrating. The things they ask you to try including turn bluetooth off or turn off background app refresh... surely all of those things should be left on, work and be supported by the phone without any issue?! I literally spent all day in the Apple store last time I went because I wasn't leaving there until they sorted it! I'm having to use my phone a lot for work now of the current situation, as I'm sure a lot of others are too, so they really need to address it

I've had the same issue - my iPhone SE (original) was at 98% a year ago, now it is 93% in less than one year. Same for my iPhone 7 except that it started on a lower maximum but it has still experienced a 5% loss of battery health - that's go to be a software issue. Also the 7 doesn't charge up very quickly and frequently gets incredibly hot, all this started with 13.4 but has continued and even gotten worse since the 13.5 updates

Hi DMC_ATL

I have the same problem with an iPhone X - as soon as I updated to iOS 13.5.1 battery life bombed.

SravanKra has given you a lot of standard steps to achieve good battery life but have you contacted Apple Support directly? They can try to deal with the issue by running diagnostics on your phone and I would recommend it. Then they get a direct idea of the issues we are having!

Apple Support advised me my battery was more than OK but warned that updates do initially demand more power from phones and it should settle down in a couple of days [ pinch of salt with that one?] However, they ran through a "Force Restart" procedure with me that I have more hope for -

IN quick succession - Briefly press & release the Up Volume, then briefly press & release the Down Volume, then press and HOLD DOWN the Power Button, and keep it held as the screen shows the power off slider, still keeping the Power Button held while the screen goes dark and keep it held until the Apple logo appears, then release it. The phone will restart, hopefully a lot cleaner than before.

Sorry I have nothing more than that and sympathy to offer. Apple do seem to keep messing things up don't they? It's all very well developing fancy virus tracking apps for media releases but messing up all iPhones' battery life needs more press attention - like the iPad iOS Photos sync debacle of last year, that is still not fixed. Hey Ho.
