After update to iOS 13.5.1 battery drain is ridiculous and phone overheats

Ever since updating to iOS 13.5.1, my phone's battery drain is ridiculous. Previously, from the time I removed my phone from the charger at 6:30 AM until I put it back on the charger at 11:00 PM, my battery would drain to around 80%. Now, it's at 80% by 8:30 AM. The device is also hot all the time. Clearly, something is wrong with this update, and it needs to be fixed.

Hi Bella_1954

Sadly some updates do cause iPhones to work harder [generating heat], they usually settle down after a few recharge/restart cycles.

If you contact Apple Support they can diagnose any battery issues or whatever.

Turning off Push and changing to Fetch Manually helps [see SravanKrA's tips above] as well as turning off Background App Refresh.

Check Settings>Battery to see what is using the most power and adjust that app if you can. If you know an app using the most power is one you close properly then definitely do a Force Restart - this clears up any legacy issues that have carried over from before the update [if you left a lot of apps 'open' when you update, this can happen] -

Force Restart: In quick succession: Briefly press & release the Up Volume, then briefly press & release the Down Volume, then press and HOLD DOWN the Power Button, and keep it held as the screen shows the power off slider, still keeping the Power Button held while the screen goes dark and keep it held until the Apple logo appears, then release it. The phone will restart, hopefully a lot cleaner than before.

best of luck.

I reset 2 iPhones and lost a lot some photos and other data, like from my watch which had to be paired again, and links I had saved to my home screen. Email any links to yourself so you can easily resave later. You will have to load all your apps again so make sure you know all your passwords. The battery problem disappeared but it was a lot of work. Calendars and contacts remained. Some people have had luck with 13.6. I did the beta 14 on 2 ipads and had to reset one finally. It works fine now. Good luck. Call Apple support and they will walk you through it.

The point is that this shouldn’t be necessary. It’s not the way iPhones were intended to be used, if you constantly have to think about turning WiFi, Bluetooth and airplane mode on and off, if you have to turn down brightness and all the other “fixes”

They’re workarounds for a blodged product, iOS 13.5.1. Cure the illness, don’t treat the symptoms..

Apple Music is killing my 11 pro max. Music was running 20+ hours in the background and the device would get hot. Did all the things, but finally had to reset the device and restore from backup with the Music app deleted. Today after 4.5 hours of the same daily use, I have 83% battery life left. If there's no fix soon, my apple music subscription will be no more.

I am so glad I found this thread. My I-phone SE had been trouble free, apart from a glitch that was introduced by an IOS update some time ago, and corrected by a subsequent one. Suddenly my battery started dying half way through the day. I hadn't installed any new apps or changed any settings. When I went to settings, to show battery usage, the information there suggested that Pedometer++ (which I have used every day for the last year or so), working in the background, was responsible for using 75% of the battery charge. What? How is that possible? I was on the point of taking my phone to a local shop to get a new battery installed, even though I have only had the phone for 18 months, and the maximum capacity is showing as 94%. I am hoping IOS 13.6 which I have just installed will fix this problem - time will tell. What annoys me most with many of these bugs is that when you contact anyone at Apple, they don't seem to be aware of them, even though they cause problems for many users. It would be nice if they said "Don't worry, we know about the problem, we're on the case, and it will be sorted in the next update."

Same here. After updating my 6S Plus to 13.5.1, my battery health dropped from 100% to 97% in few days. Battery drains with in 5-6 hrs to 20%from 100%. Its my spare phone.. finally updated to 13.6 but, the issue of battery drain still there. not sure apple fixed it in this update.. yesterday, i have updated to ios 14 beta 2. Do a factory reset and download beta and factory reset again. if possible download apps manually. i didnt restore using icloud/itunes. battery drain is there but not as fast as 13.6.. a bit slower than that.. no fix as of now
