MacBook Pro 16 with CalDigit TS3 Plus

Hello everyone,

I just bought a CalDigit TS3 to connect my MBP16 to my old Eizo CG243. It works actually fine i.e. charging the MBP16, video etc.

But once the MBP16 switches the display off e.g. due to corner command or entering sleep mode. I'm not able to switch it on. This is similarly reported by different other users.

However in most of the threads I found regarding this symptoms so far, the discussion was around the sleep mode. But I don't believe that it is sleep mode related. So why?

I deactivated the automatic switch into sleep mode if the display is turned off. This did not have any effect. The issue is still reproducible.

But if I deactivate the automatic switch between the graphic processors (Intel and AMD), the problem is not reproducible any more.

Therefore I believe the problem is somehow caused by the automated switching between the graphic processors and turning the display off/on. Maybe a graphics driver issue?

What's your opinion? Did anyone has the same issue and/or a better solution?

Best regards,

Tom

Heureka,

the Apple support was able to solve the problem. The problem was not reproducible in safe mode. Therefore the support suggested to boot in safe mode and erase the LaunchAgents (and actually startp... but this wasn't there) folders. Additionally they should be erased in normal mode, too.

Step by step. What did we do:

  1. Boot in safe mode.
    1. Press and hold shift.
    2. Switch on (still press shift).
    3. If you need to enter your password twice, your MBP is in safe mode.
  2. Open Finder.
  3. Press option and move to "Go to" menu and open Library.
  4. Remove folder "LaunchAgents".
  5. Reboot in normal mode.
  6. Open Finder.
  7. Press option and move to "Go to" menu and open Library.
  8. Remove folder "LaunchAgents"-

The problem is solved. Now I'm able to switch the display off and wake up the MBP hitting a key.

Too sad but I have to revise my post.

I just went to dinner, as I came back, the MPB16 was switched into sleep mode. A I pressed the button on MBP keyboard the key light switched on. After several seconds the lights switched off again. This repeated several times, then the fans switched to full speed shortly (reset?). The fans switched off after 1-2 seconds and then the Mac booted.

Surprisingly the automatic graphic cards switching was activated again within the energy menu. I'm sure that I have switched it off?!

Really sad there seems to be a serious problem which Apple doesn't seem to be able to fix. If I google I see complains about similar issues since last year.

I don't think that's the CalDigit TS3 causes the problem. It works without any issue (sleep, awake, etc.) with my old Lenovo T470.

I'm really disappointed. I just switched to Apple because I wanted a better maintenance of my laptop...
