Photos

Since the weekend all imported photos are not creating a thumbnail after editing raw files. They can still be seen in the Edit window but when going back the image is greyed out.

Existing RAW, edited images can be seen and I can also edit them without losing the thumbnails so I’m guessing something is going wrong when the files are imported.

Any clues?

I have tried repairing the app to no avail.

If you rotate the blank thumbnail 90˚ one direction and then back again do they regenerate correctly?

As a test launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it? (This tells us if the problem is limited to your current library or is more wide spread)

Next log into another user account, Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac and see if the problem persists. (This tells us if the problem is limited to your user account or is system wide).

Since the other account worked as expected the problem lies in your user account.

Download and run Etrecheck. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and use the Add Text button to include the report in your reply. How to use the Add Text Feature When Posting Large Amounts of Text, i.e. an Etrecheck Report

IMPORTANT:

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck in the Etrecheck's Privacy preference pane so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

Also click and read the About info to further permit full disk access.

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine what might be causing the problem.

You have installed some adware. You can remove it with Etrecheck or download and run the free version of Malwarebytes. It was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community.

Also uninstall Truslteer according to the developer's instructions. There is no reason to ever run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up" or anti-virus apps on your Mac.  This user tip describes what you need to know and do to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community

Also you have the minimum amount of RAM installed in your MBA, 4 GB. That's barely enough to run the system let along other apps. You can improve your performance by limiting the number of apps open at one time. Also you can remove the items from the System/Users & Groups/Login Items preference pane and open then only when needed and then close again.

To help clear up old temporary system, cache and swap files boot into Safe Mode (How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support) by booting with the Shift key held down.  Then reboot normally .

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing some system cache cleaning, volume verifying and directory repairing.

Thank you for your reply.

I tried the first two options and also the repair option with no result.

Using another users account the app worked perfectly.

Another issue with the affected app is it doesn’t connect properly when editing with Pixelmator.

I don’t know if it’s related but when I scan my HD with Bitdefender it usually comes back clean but scanning Time Machine it seems my back ups are badly infected. I have recently deleted them and started again but first back up produced the same result.
