iPad screen rotates after unlock

One potential possibility that might explain this behaviour is if your iPad is horizontal on a flat surface...

When horizontal, the iPad accelerometer cannot determine which way is “up” in relation to your chosen screen orientation. When waking from sleep, the iPad will attempt to determine “screen up” in relation to its current position. If the iPad is tilted, such as when using an easel or Apple Smart/Magic keyboard, the accelerometer can instantly determine “up” in relation to the current screen orientation - and rotate accordingly.

When placed horizontally and waking from sleep, most times, the screen orientation (Landscape/Portrait) will be preserved from the previous session prior to sleeping. From experience, I can confirm that this is not always the case.

I hope this provides some helpful insight into the phenomenon that you describe.

That's very odd. It has never happened with any iPad I've owned and all of them have been attached to a keyboard. Have you spoken to Apple about this?

Ye my previous iPads have been fine. It’s just annoying I guess. No keyboard connected to mine, just using an official Apple iPad cover. Will call, if they don’t reply here. Thanks

I see well you could lock the screen and unlock when you need it switched I know it might be pain but it could also be temporary fix (or long term if you don’t mind it) before you go get it checked out by a professional.
