iPhone 11 speakerphone cutting out

My girlfriend and I both have iPhone 11’s. While talking to each other if one of us is on speakerphone the other catches every other word. This happens on both phones, if I activate speakerphone she only here’s every other word and vice versa if she activated speaker phone. If you turn speakerphone off there are no issues. Is there a setting that can fix this? Is this a common issue? Thanks

iPhone 11, iOS 13

I have been having the same issue for several months. Had Apple send me a new iPhone 11 Pro and ATT sent me a new SIM card and reset my network. Everything had been replaced and nothing worked. THEN I took my phone case off and it was like night and day how clearly the other person could hear me. Do you have a case on your phone? That could be the cause of the obstructed microphone sound!

I had this issue since I purchase my iphone 11 pro max. I got it replaced through verizon, still same issue. I spent hours on troubleshooting with help desk, reset the settings, restored from backup, tried all possible tech solutions I could think of. No luck.

One thing common was my iphone case. One day I forgot to put my case on after cleaning, I found no one was complaining about voice break after I put the phone on speaker. I see the issue came back when putting my case on. Looks like the hardware sensor on new iphone is conflicting with some of the cases(at least in my case)

May be... try out removing your case and see if that resolves for you as well.

Same problem on the iPhone 11. The question is why sound breaks up when using speaker, e.g., on Facetime. Muting my microphone stops the other person from breaking up. Removing the case seems to improve the sound (less breaking up) but does not prevent it. Speaker phone normally cuts out your speaker when the microphone detects sound above a threshold sound level. That's what it sounds like is happening. The mike is picking up sound from the speakers, i.e., the other person speaking, so your phone thinks you are speaking and it cuts out the speakers.

The case may conduct sound from the speakers to the mike and make the problem worse. Remove case, so less of a problem.

It might be a setting. In another article with the same issue RKNYC found that restoring from scratch made the problem go away. Whatever happened on the restore may have changed the threshold cutout setting. We may try that next.

Same issue here with a brand new iPhone 11. For testing purposes I was utilizing a free "echo test" service which will simply echo everything you say back to you, the problem is very obvious and appears to occur every 3 seconds (during the call I was counting to 10 in repetition) - (804) 222-1111

I tried several things including individually covering each microphone, holding the phone at various distances from my mouth, etc.

The only thing that worked 100% of the time, was to take the phone out of the case I'd bought on Amazon and placed on the phone before even taking it out of the box. Had I used the phone beforehand I would've realized right away it was the case.

This is a photo from the listing, I'd encourage those reading this to avoid this particular protective item.

I have four iPhone 11s in my family and we all have the speaker phone issue. It’s clear that replacing it makes no difference. Now hear this... I do tech support over the phone for a product that uses an app. I speak to people on their speaker phone as we troubleshoot. I have had two people call me on their iPhone 12 (I always ask what phone model they have) and the same speaker phone issue is happening on iPhone 12. I am not on a mobile phone so it’s not on my side. The same speaker phone issue on iPhone 12 as iPhone 11 no joke!

What I have done, that seems to have helped tremendously, is to turn off the phone noise cancellation. Settings/Accessibility/AudioVisual

Try that and post your results!

I had the otter box defender on my 11 pro and after removing it I found that the issue resolved itself. I tested it with my friend for about an hour and he said that I sound much more clearer and there was absolutely not cutting in and out. I did go ahead and purchase a slim case on the Apple store and have had no issues. They design it so that the bottom of the phone is completely exposed and doesn’t affect the microphone

I am beyond frustrated that Apple has not even attempted to fix the problem. There are 5 of us that all recently “upgraded” to the 11. The speakerphone issue is absolutely awful. We also spent $$$ for cases to protect this crazy expensive phone. After seeking answers, we learned that those expensive cases, even those sold on Apple, are part of the problem. (There shouldn’t be a problem like this). New cases were purchased that do not have any coverage over the entire bottom of the phone. Apple wants $40, but the same case on Amazon is less than 1/2. All 5 of us changed out our cases and the problem has improved greatly. Not completely, but better for sure.

For those of you who are experiencing this issue, there is a simple fix. It seems that these phones are not very compatible with a lot of cases. I was having this issue for a while and the only thing that fixed it was removing the case. I think the thickness of most cases near the speaker is interfering with the noise cancellation. Anyway, apples professionals are dumb as a box full of sand rocks. Don’t turn to them for answers unless you want to end the day feeling like you’ve been led around by a group of kindergartners.

Based on my discovery that this happens on iPhone 12 as well... I am pretty confident that the iPhone case plays a part in this issue when the noise cancellation is on. Could be case materials or the degree in which the case covers the speaker/mic area as well as the thickness of the case around the speaker/mic area. The noise cancellation is engaging due to the audio level and either the case is reverberating or the audio is looping/amplifying back into the mic.

I have ordered a slim case and will test. Will also test with no case. Will have noise cancellation on and off for these tests.

Try turning off phone noise cancellation though and you should see an improvement with your current case.
