Unable to install Minecraft - OS Catalina

I'm trying to install Minecraft for my son's online class but keep getting the message:

"Unable to start Minecraft, if you are running from a dmg, please drag to Applications and try again"

Steps to reproduce:

Downloaded Minecraft.dmg for MacOS from Mojang - Done
Double clicked on it => Install pop-up appears asking me to drag Minecraft into Applications - Done
Checked in Applications folder: Minecraft entry is there, click on it
Minecraft Disk Volume created
The above error message pops up
Checked permissions: Read & Write permissions on Minecraft entry in Applications

I've tried contacting the school, they pointed me to this link from Mojang:

But this is a single user machine, firewall was turned off to download the dmg, OS Catalina.

Help please, his class starts on Monday... Thank you!!!

I stumbled upon the missing step in an older community post from last year, it turns out uninstalling Minecraft requires an extra step: deleting the minecraft Application Support folder that was created as part of the initial install.

SOLUTION:

Go to ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft, delete this folder
Delete Minecraft from Application folder
Make sure Firewall is turned off
Reinstall Minecraft from the downloaded dmg

That won't unmount the image. Eject the disk image and try to run the app.

Did it actually copy the app to Applications or did it create an Alias (curved arrow on icon).

Did you eject the disk image.

I don't know anything about Minecraft. When you say "Minecraft Disk Volume created," is it supposed to create some volume somewhere? Or, are you seeing the mounted disk image from where you copied the app?

The first few times I did it, it did create an Alias.

Then I read a thread somewhere about needing to make sure Firewall is turned off.

So I turned off the firewall, deleted everything (dmg, volume) and re-did the whole thing.

Could there have been something else that I needed to delete in order to make the new install a clean one?

I don't understand "volume on the desktop." You can create a folder on the desktop. But, a "volume" is a virtual subdivision of an APFS Container.

Did you eject the Minecraft disk image after moving the app to the Applications folder?
