Why is my iPhone silencing calls?

After the last iOS update, my iPhone 11 Pro Max (iOS 13.6) has decided to silence calls from any number outside of My Favorites list, and it will also not ring/vibrate when receiving ANY texts, regardless of who they are from. This only appears to happen when the phone is locked.

In settings, "Do Not Disturb" is turned off, but the checkbox under "Silence" is still on (see image). The only choices there are "Silence Always" or "Silence When Phone is Locked." Calls are being allowed from Everyone.

On the phone itself, side switch is up, and volume is at full.

I finally figured it out! Since the most recent update, it will automatically silence unknown numbers unless you go in to change it. Go to SETTINGS then PHONE then down to SILENCE UNKNOWN CALLERS and CALL BLOCKING AND IDENTIFICATION.

Checked all of apple’s suggestions. Didn’t work! Tried the posters suggestions with after the new update, and it worked. Now here is a little feedback for apple. Because of your new update. My court case to establish paternity for my son was VIA Telephonic, and your Update SILENCED MY COURT CALL. Maybe next time you put some BS in an update, post an Attention: on social media or whatever. You know how to get your message out.

You are a genius. I had no idea Apple added this “feature “. My wife was my designated driver for a outpatient procedure and the hospital could not reach her because their numbers was not part of her contacts. This can be a dangerous add that needs to be rethought. Good idea to reduce spam but emergency calls will be missed.

I've been having the silent caller issue for a while. A temporary fix I came across is to go Mobile data > Mobile data options > Voice and data > change down to 3g. It works but at some point (after a switch off?) the problem returns. Grim that such a piece of so called high tech fails on making a simple phone call. I don't know where the fault lies - Apple or the network provider.

(Mobile data = Cellular data in US)

In newer updates of iOS , the setting is called “silence unknown callers” and it lives outside of do not disturb. Just pull down your settings menu to get to search and type that in. This has caused me so much pain and missed calls from bills etc and people thinking I’m “hard to get ahold of.” I thought it was something in my do not disturb settings and changed things there, but the whole time it’s a whole hidden setting iphone never asked me to activate or suggested. There is also a weird setting that automatically calls back missed calls. Forgot where that is but I found it in help here,

I have an iPhone 7 and the Silence Unknown Callers can be OFF or On and the only calls Ringing are ones in my Contact list. I'm new to Smart Phones and iPhones. I've seen a few replies that mention the software updates and I don't remember which one caused my problem. Does Apple have a site to help us troubleshoot things like this?

Go to "Settings", scroll down to "Phone" and open that up. In the 4th widget box down is "Silence Unknown Callers". If you select that you can turn it on and off. If someone is not in your contacts, that is considered an "Unknown caller" and therefore silences the call.

The original poster, to whom you replied, had this to say on 09/30/2020 the last time this same suggestion was made:

That didn't fix the issue. Silence Unknown Callers is off, and no one is being blocked.
