Why is my iPhone silencing calls?

This is a huge problem. I am a physician and get calls from the hospital, often for emergencies, and they are getting silenced. Even though the hospital has hundreds of extensions, each is identified with the hospital name, not as “unknown caller.” I have “silence unknown callers” turned on so I won’t get disturbed by spam calls all day while caring for patients. It seems the only way to get the hospital calls is to allow the unknown calls to ring through as well. Note that calls from my contacts do ring.

My issue is that these calls are not “unknown.” Caller ID labels them as coming from a hospital number. I assumed silencing unknown callers would only silence those labeled as unknown. And I definitely don’t want to risk blocking them entirely. I tried RoboKiller but it was blocking calls from my contacts, even my favorites! Customer service was useless.

I am having the same issue and I’ve missed important calls from office. I’m a nurse and those calls are to see patients. Time is of essence in patient care. I’ve tried everything the same as you have. Thank you for bringing issue up. Hope it can get resolved.

This is a CRAZY idea of an update. I mean I understand wanting to make the phone less distracted for people. But having every call silenced while the phone is locked????

I mean I use my Iphone for business and now important calls are not coming to my attention. I don't understand this update at all.

This is a 7 page thread, that covers several subjects. No one could possibly have any idea what changes you are talking about, and the post that you replied to doesn’t mention any changes, so we can’t even go by that.

If you don’t want Apple to implement improvements get another brand of phone. Of course, they implement changes all the time also. So maybe what you need is a basic flip phone. They never change.

Thanks for the reply, I agree, it’s weird, that’s why I took the picture too and shared. I also noticed user Krisi128 who shared his/her Settings >Phone screenshot also has Announce Calls set at Never, so I’m surprised who they got the problem fixed!

It’s also strange how the different users have experienced different settings changes that caused the call silencing when locked.

Oh! Thanks for sharing that! While my phone rings now, it's no wonder that now there's an accompanying audio at the beginning of the call. Hmmm, I still do not know how to fix the problem and will have to put up with that until I find the solution! I'll keep an eye out on this thread, thanks Mr. Finch.

Just about everyone posting in this 9 page thread has found a fix, most were different fixes because there can be several possible causes, almost all of them improperly set options. So just go back and read the thread and I’m sure you will find a solution.

Correct. That’s the mute switch. It is independent of Do not Disturb and Silence Unknown Callers, and will turn off all sounds except emergency alerts and streaming content (thus, if you are streaming music, podcasts or a video and don’t want to be interrupted you can enable mute mode by moving the switch away from the screen).

None of these "fixes" are working. I have spent a couple of hours with apple technicians who are unable to figure it out and tried to blame it on the carrier but this is obviously a software issue. Has anyone figured-out how to bypass this problem?

Every time the software is updated on my iPhone, something starts misfiring somewhere on my iPhone XR.

This time my phone does not ring when I receive a text, Sometimes it rings for phone call, sometimes it doesn't. I have studied the manual. Last night I listened to a YouTube fixit. It said there were 5 places an iPhone can be silenced. I checked all of those. They were all set properly.

HELP! There was an emergency last night. It did not alert me that I had received 5 messages in quick succession. It DID ring, from same person when he called.

Please tell me the all of the places to check to fix this problem. Thank you,

my calls are simply being silenced. the phone does not ring goes to message bank. for a business reliant on

people booking appointments it is a costly error for us. If its happening all over then a new phone isn't the answer

It is not a great solution to have my callers name announced out loud in a shopping centre when you work in mental health arena! Privacy is an issue to start with.

fix: without ‘the above’ my iPhone silences all incoming calls which go straight to message bank. An update (fix) or a new brand of phone are my solution possibilities!

My iPhone 11 sucks. It’s a piece of crap. Silenced calls and no text notifications have cost me money because of me not being able to respond in a timely manner. Called Apple Support who could not fix it. They offered to replace with a refurbished iPhone. Please give me a break. Why would I want a refurbished one when the new one I purchased less than two years ago is a piece of crap. Fed up with iPhones. I must say I am fed up with the Apple Watch also.
