When using an app go to the Edit menubar item and see if Copy and Paste have a shortcut attributed to them.

If they are empty you could use System Preferences> Keyboard> Shortcuts

Highlight App Shortcuts in the left hand panel.

Click on the plus button, from the drop down menu

Select All Applications

Menu Title: Copy

Menu Shortcut: ⌘C

Press Add.

Having done that you can do the same for Paste

using the ⌘V shortcut.
