Airpods disconnect whenever I play any sort of sound

I've had my gen 2 AirPods since December of 2018. They've been great, but an issue has arisen. They will connect to both my phone and my macbook fine, but as soon as I try to play any sort of sound (music, youtube, etc.), the airpods disconnect and play the audio out of my speakers. When I try to reconnect my airpods, the video/music stops and will disconnect the airpods again so it can keep playing. How can I fix this?
