iPad Pro USB-C and HDMI sound

So I regularly connect my iPad to an external USB-C hub that gives me a bunch of stuff including an HDMI output for a monitor. Unfortunately, connecting HDMI sends audio there but I don't want that, I just want the internal speakers to still output. I know I can connect it to an external bluetooth speaker or headphones but I just want the speakers to work. How can I accomplish this?

When you iPad is connected to a Monitor, TV or audio system over HDMI - all audio from the HDMI “source” is directed to the HDMI “sink”. This behaviour is entirely normal - and expected of HDMI connected systems.

iPad does not provide facility to change or override this behaviour.
