Someone else responded to a text message

There is another person responding to text messages. Very simple responses such as “talk later” or “ok”. This occurs randomly and it happens with iPhone users as well as android text messages. The Apple ID has been changed and I’ve reset the phone back to factory settings and reloaded the saved backup. I’ve also checked setting for Text Fowarding and there’s no forwarded message detail there. Is the phone compromised or is it the phone number? Will getting a new phone number or device correct this? It’s a iPhone 7.

iPhone 7, iOS 11

Hey ChetaNicole,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. If we understand, it seems that you're having an issue where someone else is responding to text messages. We want to help, but also need to be sure we're on the same page. Is the person responding to messages you send, or responding as you? How long has this been ongoing? Are they iMessages or text messages? Here's how to tell the difference, just in case: About iMessage and SMS/MMS

Lastly, let's ensure your iPhone is updated to the current software version of 13.7. Tap Settings > General > About to find the software version you have installed. If an update is needed, be sure to back up your iPhone first. Here's a guide for both steps: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

We look forward to hearing back from you.

Take care!

ChetaNicole,

That's great information. It does look like she has an available software update to get to 13.7. When she has a moment, ask her to back up, then update the software. The link with the steps can be found in our last message, but we'll link it again here, just in case: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Since this is an ongoing issue, and since she's already worked with Apple Support, we recommend reaching back out to them to look into this further with her. Here's a list of contact numbers, just in case: Contact Apple for support and service

Cheers!

The person is responding as though they are the owner of the device. It's happening on my mother's Iphone (not mine). It happens on both iMessages and text messages.

This has been happening since July and was reported to Apple (I have a case number from when it was reported). I reset the Apple password and set up 2 factor authentication but the texting was still occurring. I also reset the phone to factory settings and reloaded her backup thinking that might help but it's still occurring.

She is running software version 13.6.1
