I edited contacts in my outlook (icloud contact) and when I saved it, I got an error message "Your changes cannot be saved because you don't have permission to modify some or all of the items in this folder. Do you want to save a copy of this item in the default folder for the item.". I am not sure what happened and need some help. Thanks.

I have the same problem. A Microsoft update broke it. Until they push down a fix, here is a temporary workaround:
1. When you are asked if you want to save the revised contact in another folder, answer yes.
2. Go back to your iCloud contact folder and delete the contract you wanted to modify.
3. Go to the folder where the revised contact was saved and move it to your iCloud contact folder.
4. If you do not first delete the old contact from the iCloud contact folder, the new one will not move over.
I have the same problem. All versions of Outlook and it is only 1 way. Upstream edits to iCloud fail. Downstream from iCloud is fine. I have removed all recent updates from the last two days to no avail.
I have even added a permission for all users on the DB folder where the iCloud data is stored for full control and that has not helped. I am betting MS problem since they have some real security issues with release 2004. Their patches to fix the release are even flawed.

It works but creates another problem.
When you serach something you get this message: "Le prestazioni della ricerca non saranno ottimali perchè il servizio Windows Search è stato disattivato da un account con privilegi elevati".
Search performance will not be optimal because the Windows Search service has been disabled from an account with elevated privileges

I have the problem not only with Outlook but also with Mozilla Thunderbird. Here I have the following message in TbSync-Log:

Thank you for your input. Either it is Microsoft Office or Apple iCloud, I hope they can all recognize the issue and solve it as soon as possible. Unfortunately, they have indicated it was the other side's problem not theirs from the beginning. I guess this issue will continue for a while.
NOT YET; just shut down everything and re-booted pc. Restarted Outlook and tried to modify and save a contact; NO LUCK. Problem returned. Sorry for false hope, it did work and now it does not after shutting down PC.
I waited on the phone for APPLE to answer for 347 minutes, my wife then called me to dinner so I hung up. I will call at 3am central time hoping to get someone who can shed some light. YES i agree it is a paid to go thru each time you want to update a contact. As of 9:04pm Central Time 9-14-20 the problem still exists. Signed GRANTAMS
This is just another example of how Apple software is "reluctant" to cooperate with Microsoft. I have constant issues running anything Apple on a Windows 10 device. Aren't they prosperous enough to establish compatibility?
Unfortunately we as end users have to wait for these two giants to decide when they will address the issue. Maybe till the issue becomes an issue for themselves. I assume they only use devices with their own operation systems not each other. Hopefully, MS people use iPhones or Apple people use Windows PC ..... just a thought. I am just still waiting for solutions.
After itunes update and Outlook working ok I get this message when attempting to authorize this computer "There was a temporary problem completing your request. The network connection was reset." I cannot access authorization in itunes. What nonsense really
