Edit to iCloud contact in Outlook gives error when saving

This just started happening within the past day or two.

My calendar and contacts are in iCloud and they sync with Outlook (Microsoft 365 Home) on my PC via iCloud for Windows (Windows 10 - everything up to date). Has been working fine for months.

Today, when I edit an iCloud contact from Outlook 365 and then try to save the changes, I get this error:

Your changes cannot be saved because you don’t have permission to modify some or all of the items in this folder. Do you want to save a copy of this item in the default folder for the item?

Note: if I answer "yes", a new contact gets saved in "My Contacts" ... Contact list associated with my outlook email address.

This is what "Contacts" looks like in Outlook:

Note that I CAN to the following:

  • Edit an existing Calendar entry in Outlook on PC and create a new one (and changes appear in iCloud and on iPhone and iPad)
  • Create a new Contact in Outlook on PC (and it appears in iCloud.com and on my iPhone and iPad)
  • Edit the contact in iCloud.com or on iPhone/iPad and the edit does show up in Outlook on my PC

So sync is working just fine. The only issue is editing an existing iCloud contact ... in Outlook on PC.

What I've tried:

  • I have restarted Outlook and PC. I have signed in and out of iCloud for Windows.
  • I check the permissions on my <xxx>@icloud.com.ost file and they are fine.
  • I ran Outlook as admin: then I could save the change on my PC without getting the error message. However, the change did not go up to iCloud, and when I opened Outlook again (not as an admin), I got a popup window with this error: "Your changes to this item could not be saved because Server Denied Operation (HTTP 403 Forbidden)."

So it appears that iCloud is denying "change" access from Outlook. (Although "create" access seems to be fine.) But only for Contacts ... as previously documented, Calendar stuff (edit/create) is fine.

Any ideas? I'm out of them!

Thanks! ;-)

I'm having the same issue for my home and office computer, which are synced via icloud, both using Office 365 on Windows 10 Pro. I attempted to have a Microsoft Tech resolve the issue for me, they couldn't fix the issue, and blamed the issue on being an apple add-in issue. I called Apple, who said "Absolutely Not! It's a Microsoft Office issue, they must fix it." So it seems that each are blaming one another and leaves the issue unresolved with nowhere to turn.

Two final points, I am able to make all changes to my contacts on my iPhoneX as Microsoft says there are no add-ins on the phone like you do on the computer. I am able to create a new contact, but the minute I save it, I am unable to make any changes to it and receive the error message.

If anyone finds out how to resolve the problem, I would love to hear how.

Below are the steps that were taken by the Microsoft Tech and what he supplied me. Quite honestly, I can't follow it, but thought some of you will, so I included it.

There was a MVP at MS that posted a solution that worked , then it did not. I replied to her as follows:

Thank you Diane; however it does not work. I started as you suggest using "Run an Admin).

When you open an iCloud contact in Office 365 Home Outlook version (all updates applied, latest version) and make a change, then click save, you error out with the following message:

Could not save changes to ****pany

Your changes to this item cannot be saved because server denied operation (HTTP 403 Forbidden)

then you have to force close the window/outlook using task manager.

Reopen without using Run as Admin, and error remains the same:

Your changes cannot be saved because you don't have permission to modify some or all of the items in this folder. Do you want to save a copy of this item in the default folder for the item? (Which is MSN contacts.)

Any other suggestions?

Me too starting a few weeks ago - not much to add. Have 2,000+ addresses in MS-Outlook. Copied to iCloud and they appeared in iPhone & iPad as expected. They stayed synced four a week.

Then I started adding new address entries and editing old ones. Works as desired about 1/3 of the time. The rest of the time the sync would hang (as described here), entries would be duplicated, "Notes" field would sometimes be duplicated in a new (second) copy and now MS-Outlook is often hanging.

Also, I use MS-Contact Category color bar and it appears and disappears randomly.

For those of us that rely on requent updating of contacts from Outlook, and whilst this issue remains unsolved, I have been very successful in using some free software to sync my Outlook Contacts with Google, and thence to my iPhone etc. iCloud has always been a bit of a problem for me, incompatible with earlier versions, randomly generating extra addresses etc, and I am now seriously considering ditching it altogether. The software I use works with all versions of outlook, and doesn't worm itself into the program as does iCloud, so all my contacts remain local, as well as being accessible in the cloud, which gives me a better feeling of security of the data. I hope that helps anyoe who is getting desperate!

I wonder if anyone having this problem is using iCloud version 11? I tried to upgrade but can't get it to install the Outlook integration.

The "current" version is officially called "iCloud for Windows 11" and is now distributed from the Microsoft Store. It is not downloaded from Apple. Note that this is iCloud version 11 for Windows and does not refer to some future Windows 11 (yes it's confusing). The legacy iCloud for Windows v7.20.0.17 is still available for download from Apple for Windows 7 and 8 and is "recommended" for Windows 10 PRIOR TO OS Build 18362.145 or higher (the May 2019 update). Apple says iCloud for Windows v7 will continue to be maintained but will not get any new feature updates.

I run 64 bit Windows 10 Pro Version 1909 OS Build 18363.1082 and my 32 bit Microsoft 365 Office Click to Run installation is completely up to date. Note that the default for Office installations is still the 32 bit version unless you have giant databases. Microsoft recommends the 32 bit version to have the widest compatibility with 3rd party addins so I have not gone to the 64 bit version. So in theory iCloud version 11 should work and I wondered if it would fix the Contact updating problem.

According to Apple there are some new Photos features that are not in the older iCloud for Windows v7. One of these "features" is that iCloud for Windows v11 no longer downloads full resolution copies of your Photos. You can get the full resolution ones but you have to specifically request them. This may save local storage space but it is NOT a feature update as far as I am concerned unless it is a selectable option I can turn off.

I removed iCloud version 7.20.0.17, rebooted and then installed the iCloud app from the Windows Store. The iCloud app looks and works exactly the same and I configured what I needed including the Outlook integration. It appeared to download all the contacts and contact photos, calendar entries, etc. but then got the error message:

iCloud for Windows did not install properly. To repair it, you need to go to Apps and features, select iCloud Outlook, select Change and then select Repair ...

Note that iCloud for Windows v11 installs as two separate apps in Windows - iCloud and iCloud Outlook. I tried repairing iCloud Outlook and it did not fix the problem. So I tried reparing iCloud - but still got the same error message. Eventually I removed iCloud for Windows v11 and went back to iCoud for Windows v7.20.0.17. My calendars, tasks and Contacts are all back working normally except for the ongoing Contact updating problem.

Does anyone have iCloud for Windows v11 installed and if so, are you still having the Contact updating problem? If you do have iCloud for Windows v11 installed and had to mess around to get it to work, then any installation tips or advice would be appreciated.

BobzMac; Thank you for the full update on the MS vs Apple iCloud files.

About 2 years ago, i went to MS iCloud only to find it would not work with Outlook 365 as i had to run Outlook in Windows 8 compatibility to get iCloud to work at all. Thus i have been using Apple iCloud 7.x.

Having that background, about a week ago the current issue of contact saving appeared. I went to an Apple Senior Engineer who had me uninstall iCloud 7 with MS 11. All went as planned however the in ability to save a changed contact within Outlook continued on iCloud 7.x or MS iCloud 11.x remained. Thus i reverted back to iCloud 7.x as my other windows PCs are running that.

So short answer; problem is with either Apple 7.x or MS iCloud 11.x.
