Unable to download email from hughes.net server using Netscape

email will not download from Hughes.net server using Netscape. Have tried deleting and reinstalling email account numerous times with no results. Low level Apple Support had no other solution than that to offer. In looking at the mail preferences the line labelled Incoming Mail Server which correctly displays

mail.hughes.net is in a faded type face which in past has been an indication that the system is inop. Deleting and reinstalling would restore this line to a bolder type face and the system would work properly. It is not happening this time. Any suggestions?

The last development of Netscape by AOL ended in 2008, twelve years ago. Hughes may have changed the name, or access model for their email service. I suggest you contact their support team and determine 1) if the Netscape browser is still supported, and 2) how to currently access your email from a Hughes mail server, and the currently required configuration to do so.

I was given the Netscape name by my wife; the system installed is identified as Mail, Version 9.3, 1995-2016 so it's a little more up to date than Netscape. We have been using port 110 for incoming mail since the beginning; if I check the box Use SSl the port changes to 995 but that doesn't work either. In the lower left hand corner of Mail it's says Downloading Mail and gives the number of messages on the server that it is attempting to bring in so there is a connection but no action. I will check with Hughes but have not found them very helpful in the past with regard to email problems. Are you aware of an email program compatible with our version of OS X that I could download to replace Mail?

The older Mail accounts were POP3 using port 110, but newer Mail accounts are using the IMAP protocol with SSL port 993, or TLS port security. You will still need to check with Hughes to see what type of email protocol (POP3 or IMAP) they are now using (in case they converted your email acccount to IMAP), and what specific secure settings they are using now.

Changing the Mail client will do you no good until you get the first paragraph sorted with Hughes support. Provided Hughes can help, you could continue to use Apple Mail, unless your version of Apple Mail is too old for the current Hughes email security requirements.
