iPhone camera not working after iOS 14 update

Hello... after I updated my iPhone 7 Plus to iOS 14, my camera acts up. It doesn't load the camera. I then try to turn on the flashlight but it doesn't work either. Sometimes, I try to repeatedly turn on and off the flashlight until suddenly it works. I then come back to the camera and keep switching the camera modes, and rarely, it functions. Once I exit it an try the camera on an app though, it doesn't work again. Restarting didn't help my problem.

Hi, you can check this: If the camera or flash on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch isn't working

You can restore your phone as new:

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

If the issue persists, you can take your phone to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. Book an appointment on getsupport.apple.com or use the Apple Support app.

I’ve had the same issue, and the microphone didn’t work since iOS 13 (iPhone 7), I’ve fixed it by removing the NFC Tag Reader from the control center, I think it somehow interferes with the camera and flash. To disable it you need to:

  1. Open Settings app on your home screen.
  2. Scroll down until you find Control Center.
  3. Scroll until you find NFC Tag Reader.
  4. Tap the small (-) sign and press “Remove”.

I hope this helps.

I am having the exact same issue with my iPhone 11 Pro Max. Updated to ios14 and none of my rear facing cameras or the flash/flashlight are working (get a black screen in camera app with cameras). Front facing camera works. Occasionally I can get a live view out of the telephoto camera by switching between the three rear cameras, but then the image does not focus and I cannot take photos.

I’ve force quit camera app, force quit all other apps, restarted phone, done soft reset, erased all content and settings and restored from backup, and (at suggestion of apple phone service) connected the phone to my MacBook Pro and restored from the computer (which reinstalls ios14). Still have same issue with rear cameras/flash/flashlight not working.

I spoke to Apple about this. I chatted with an advisor yesterday, and called a senior advisor today. Both didn't wield results. They suggested that we wait for an upcoming update. They have however informed the engineers about this problem and are working on it as we speak. Many have also reported the same issue too. I hope they will ACTUALLY fix this in the next update and not break other features too. My microphone stopped working after iOS 13 too I think.

same issue and mic stopped working in ios13 for my iphone 7. however i found a temporary solution for the camera app. this may or may not work for all.

step 1: unlock your phone

step 2: turn on the flashlight from control center. it most likely won’t turn on but the icon would say it’s on.

step 3: open the camera app (not from the control center) and wait for 7-12 seconds and it should work.

Same issue - iPhone 7 Plus

My 2nd 7 Plus, 1st one had the microphone issue as well, and the 2nd also had a broken microphone after a few months (not new, passed over from a family member).

Now after iOS 14 update, camera has the black image issue as well, not just isolated to the iPhone camera app.

Tried: Restarting iPhone, other suggestions that are also in this thread

Contacted support, spoke with advisors and senior advisors, got a diagnostics run which concluded no hardware issue, reccomended to factory reset and restore the phone, which I took the pain to do. Not a fix.

Building on benjflores31's solution, what also worked for me to get the camera to work (im on iPhone 11 running iOS 14), was to turn off the NFC reader based on the steps shown here. A small minus sign () should be there and tap on Remove.

For some reason the whenever I enable the NFC reader, it always screws up with my camera which causes it to not work. :/

Hopefully that helps. Let me know if it still doesn't work and I will try my best to help. Thanks!

Apple, at this time, 4,377 people have had this same issue. Please help us! Our phones are useless and we paid lots of money for them. Do the right thing.

Actually, they aren't.

Anyone can click and denote "interest" in a thread.

Further, in the first quarter of 2017 alone, 23.5 million iPhone 7s were sold, so the issue is far from universal.

As I've stated before, be sure to contact Apple Support directly.

They have the records to note how many users actually are experiencing the issue and can escalate the issue with engineering if needed.

not everyone is familiar with apple support and internal company process and workflow so we just complain wherever we can. apple discussion board sounds like a logical place. responsible manager should keep an eye on suspicious threads that may need some attention rather than waiting for support cases numbers to tally up.

This is a user to user forum and as such, Apple does not monitor it except for violations of the terms of use.

It is intended for Apple users to help each other solve issues, but something like this can only be addressed by Apple themselves, thus my advice to contact Apple Support directly:

i wasted *6 days* and i am, still struggling on getting my phone back to a proper working state as iCloud restore fail when phone gets too hot during restore.

I've never seen that occur; if your phone is in a case, make sure you remove your phone first as it might be in as the case might be preventing it from cooling properly.

I opened a support case first via the apple support app and got routed to one engineer, asked some questions, tried few things, ran remote analytics, then they say no problem with hardware, will speak to a senior manager, wait for half an hour, call get dropped. i called back with the same customer number, "how can i help you, can you tell me what's happening?" , support person did not read the case notes until i finally request to do so rather then going thru the whole explanation. then they asked me if i have done a full hard reset. i say i did. oh , that hard reset button reboot is not a hard reset. they asked me to wipe my phone clean and reinstall the os and test from there. i couldn't because i ran out of space on my computer.

Frustrating I realize, though you can't fault Apple for the latter case.

diagnostics ran but fail because wifi cannot be found.
outside diagnostic, wifi connects with zero problem.

sorry, cannot help you. you can leave with a phone with bare os and no content. Have a good day.

I received a email today asking me about support staff/case experience at the store.

i rated a 4 out of 5, very friendly and compassionate support staff.

but couldn't solve my phone problem.

I'm sorry you experienced that, normally running diagnostics on a phone is a painless process in-store, but you both did agree to wipe it without a backup.

All I can suggest is making another support appointment and asking someone else to help you and/or relating your issue to the store manager, who may be able to assist you further.

Once again, if you are experiencing these issues, please contact Apple Support directly.

The amount of attention engineering gives an issue is directly correlated with how many contacts Apple Support receives on an issue.

This forum is a user to user forum only and the best hope for a fix lies in contacting Apple Support:

My mic stopped working as soon as I downloaded iOS 13 and now my camera as soon as I downloaded 14. Went to apple store and obviously the “Genius”only solution was to spend £1000 on a new iphone. Apple clearly do it on purpose to get us to spend more money.

When the repair cost for an out of warranty iPhone 7 is £286.44, why would the "only" solution be to purchase a new phone for £1000?

Well after linking this thread to apple support they now know it’s not hardware since so many people have had same issues.

Yes, and they fixed it for most in iOS 14.0.1.

The mic problem some are having is a different issue and should be in its own thread at this point.

If you are still having a camera issue after installing iOS 14.0.1, contact Apple Support directly:
