Email photo as attachment, not embedded, in iOS 14

I just updated my phone to ios14. I have an hotmail email account I’ve used for years. Before I updated I could email pictures to my work email and outlook account and they would be attachments at top of email. Easy to save, copy, print, etc. Now the pictures show up in the body of the email. Full screen and not easy to work with. Is there a setting I need to change to get it back to the way it sent pictures before I updated. Thanks

My assistant found a work around. Record a 1 second video. Go into your photos and select all your photos and the video send as you used to prior to IOS 14 and they will all go to the email as an attachment. Make it a really short video or it makes the file rather large.

Fair point LACAllen, I will take that on the chin.

I have seen a number of other people getting frustrated with the same response though it they are also having their posts deleted so as normal users, not IT experts, failing to communicate the basic fact that if I try to do this simple act on IOS13 or older it works but doesn’t on IOS14 therefore regardless of the technical details are we asking too much too see if it’s possible to go back to how it was ?

Frustration does not alter reality.

The responses given are all we have. It is what it is and here is where you can provide feedback to Apple.

If Apple is to "fix" or "address" this issue, they will.

They will not announce it here. They will not debate it here.

It is well understood this approach is not popular. A strong sense of entitlement is displayed here quite often. This community is provided by Apple for a specific reason. It is not a complaint channel.

Demanding action and huffing and puffing is futile.

HI LACAllen

Is there anywhere that a community of actual users can collectively voice their concerns then ?

The concerns we had on here from Halliday were that it appeared the responses were automated and no-one was actually listening to us. Its not a personal attack but I take your points.

Please could you explain what you mean by

Not popular with who, Apple ?

Logically, wouldn't someone who actually owns an iphone have a more valid contribution to this thread than someone who admits he doesn't even own an iphone? Just asking.

This discussion stopped being about logic quite some time ago.

If logic prevailed, this discussion would be a few pages long and long dormant as logically, puffing up one's chest and "me-too'ing" is pointless.

It has become an emotional hot point.

If Apple is to pay a price for the dozens of disgruntled users here, they will. Even if the dozens here represent tens of 1000s out "there", it is still a small number of their user base.

Everyone seems to lose sight... Apple does as Apple sees fit to do. They stopped support for many seemingly perfectly good technologies over the years. Floppy drive. Firewire, Optical Disc Drives. and so on.

I am not defending Apple. Providing context.

Totally agree

And if people don't like it then they should just go and buy a different phone. Not the best attitude but as you say, they can do what they want.

I suppose what we were trying to highlight is that there is a lot of us on here not happy with this change and possible the Apple may care for their customer to investigate to see if this was an oversight on their part - it would be nice to know they had even looked at it rather than getting some random person without an iPhone to keep quoting "tiny subset" and all that.

Well fair play to Apple, lets just hope they don't ever become as complacent as Nokia

All the best

This is well understood. We are not stupid.

But again... if one reads the terms of the community, which were agreed to by all of us, it is made clear this is a place to ask and have answered, technical support questions. Not a place to debate Apple policy or how Apple manages "things".

It can be accepted that the world is now full on TL'DR. However, when told that Apple will not engage here, users often attack and name call those of us trying to educate and provide context. They accuse us of being bots and/or cheerleaders.

If I’m deadly honest it’s a refreshing change to get some straight talking such as the words from you.

If from the outset someone had just said simply “Yes, Apple have made a change in IOS14 that now stops you doing what you want to do” rather than what appeared to be copied and pasted responses then I’m guessing all of the ranting would have ended long ago.

I now appreciate Apple are aware of it and may or may not do anything about it and if I don’t like it ... tough I guess.

My reference to somewhere that users could voice their opinion collectively, the link you suggested on allows individuals to communicate and not speak as a group so sorry if I was unclear on that.

What I’m getting at was the blaming of a “tiny subset of ......” just wound everyone up as it was in Apples power to fix, they just choose not to and that’s fair enough.

As customers we make our choices, whilst as a business of 115,000 users all on Outlook that is not something I can change but to remove iPhones from our list of corporate devices as it’s not fit for OUR purposes is our choice however a shame for Apple as the iPhone is a preference but not a necessity. As an insignificant user we were hoping to find a solution on this platform but sadly that’s not available this time

I too am really irritated by this unannounced change. I am a photographer and need to have control of my images. If this had been announced, the outcry would have nipped it in the bud. But, I would have saved no end of time wasted wondering what I was doing wrong. Smarten up, Apple - I have loved my iPhone for years but this is enough to send me elsewhere.

I totally agree with you.

The overwhelmingly majority of us are equally frustrated and angry with this change that Apple made to IOS 14. A senior Apple manager confirmed to me that the change in IOS 14 stops people from being able to send pics as attachments through the mail app. I've also shown another Apple manager this thread - so Apple is well aware of the issue.

I was hoping Apple might reverse the change with the update it made this week to IOS 14. But - nope.

Just thought you should know what we're facing here.

Just thought you should know what we're facing here.

So let's sum up where this issue stands. The following is not in dispute...

** An iOS change was made that alters how attached images are seen at the receiver's end.

** This change has angered and frustrated many users. Likely many more then have spoken up here.

** Despite 50+ plus pages of "me too" & "yeah.. can't you see how upset i am" & "make him stop saying that", the issue is not yet resolved.

** It is maddening to some of you that Apple won't answer your "why" questions.

** It is maddening to some of you that Apple won't "fix it NOW!!!!!!!"

Conclusions?

The issue will not be resolved here. Nobody from Apple will come here and update the community on what Apple's plans are.

Despite insistent demands to the contrary, that won't happen. Why? The purpose of this Apple managed community is not to debate policy and decisions made or not made. I am confident that Apple is aware of the feelings being shared. I am also confident Apple will not engage on policy and decisions made here and I am grateful they don't.

The feeling of "not being heard" is moot. There is a huge difference between being heard and getting an answer.

Apple may very well do nothing. Apple may make another change that restores the functionality being discussed.

If you want to continue believing that posting what you post, that often gets removed, is furthering your cause... carry on.

I decided to do some more extensive testing since I was seeing conflicting results. Here is what I tested with, iPhone 12 Pro with iOS 14 with native Apple email client only, iPhone 12 Pro with Spark email client and native Apple client, Samsung Note 20 Ultra with Spark email client, Mail.com client, Outlook for Android and Chrome browser for webmail capable sites. Lastly Windows 10 PC with Chrome for webmail capable sites, Outlook, Thunderbird and lastly eM Client. First, using the iPhone with only the native email application: no matter what client I used on Android and Windows, the pictures were embedded and not available as attachments, with the following exception; when viewing the inbox list for Gmail in the browser the attachments were listed and could be individually saved.

Next I tested email sent from the iPhone that had Spark installed. I sent the same pictures once using Spark to send and once using Apple Mail to send. The emails behaved like in the past (i.e. pre iOS 14). No matter which email I used to send the pictures they were available as attachments on all my clients on Windows and Android. Additionally, those sent using Apple Mail from that iPhone had the pictures both embedded in the body of the email and available as attachments to save. It seems, at least from my testing, that having loaded Spark email client on the iPhone made email behave like it used to prior iOS 14. Note that when composing the email using Apple Mail it still just says embedd pictures but on the receiving end you get both an embedded picture and an attachment.

I was having this issue too and stumbled across how to fix the issue. Attach the photo as normal, which will cause it to be inserted into the body of the email. Once it is there, you can tap on the image and two options should appear “send as attachment” and “remove”. Select “send as attachment”.

Once it has been changed to an attachment, you change change it back to being inserted by tapping on the image again and selecting “send inline”.

I hope this works for you!
