Hi, my iphone X is suddenly not recognizing my face after the iOS 14 update yesterday. I thought a face id reset will solve the issue, but it is still not working. When trying to set the face id, it is showing the error of ‘move the iphone a little higher/trlower’. Nothing works after multiple attempts. Is this an iOS14 issue?

SOLVED: Hi everyone! I had my appointment with Apple Genius Bar today. This is a faulty hardware issue. This is not related to iOS 14 nor will it be fixed with a new update. Sorry to say you'll have to pay $650 to replace your phone. Luckily I was still under my 1-Year limited warranty. The employee told me there is a chip in the hardware that has failed. Thankfully I walked out with a new phone at no cost. But I wanted to share my experience in hopes that it gives you some answer to this issue.

Updated to iOS 14.2 on iPhone XS Max: problem NOT SOLVED. Dot projector still off :'-(
Same for me, since iOS-14.0.1, then 14.1, then 14.2, the dot projector stays switched off. Tried soft reset, restoration from DFU, no evolution, problem still there :-(

probably it is the best chance to not update iOS- waiting for an option to rollback to a stable FW (eg. 13.x) if te overheating caused by iOS 14.0 didn’t broke the Hardware
Same, yesterday mine upgraded to 14.3, today i got difficulties to login through face id, i tried to set up new face but screen says lower iphone or pur it higher , at the end fail
You have to buy a new phone. That is Apple response.
Interestingly it also happens to fresh out of the box iPhone12. You can search in this forum under iPhone12. I have not seen any post where someone got the phone exchanged to a working one.
Apple designed these in a way that it cannot be repaired. Bad design.
Face ID failure is caused by damage of the Flood illuminator/Dot Projector in most cases, which can not be repaired.
14.1 fixed the issue for some days and stopped after updating 14.2
Don’t wast your time, I went for the same problem updated me to 14.7 and screed my phone even more. Now my Face ID is totally disabled.

To fix this issue, go to Face ID & Passcode, other Apps, and then unselect the App that Face ID is not working for and then go to your app and sign in with your password. After this, go back to Face ID & Passcode and select the App to use Face ID. Close your App from the phone background and reopen it and it should let you use Face ID after you verify your password. This is how I fixed mine on an IPhone 11.

I have the same issue on iPhone 11. That said, this same issue occurred during the last update as well and it magically fixed itself a week or so later - I’m hoping Apple will fix this soon. It’s driving me bananas!
I have the exact same problem, Face Id is not working since the ios 14 update, I've done everything recommended by support, reset phone, reset face id and even restore factory settings and still not working. Hope with the next update this will get fixed
Does anyone else’s Facebook still work mine doesn’t since the upgrade gives me some weird movement error. Along with Face ID not setting up and I called and did all they said nothing works. It just keeps saying mover lower move higher and then Face ID failed try again later
