Notes app on iOS 14 very slow

I have a note on my phone that is very full, it had a lot of information. Let’s say you can scroll for a good 10 seconds from one end to the other. On iOS 13 there were 0 issues. On iOS 14 when I type, it is noticeably slower and laggier. When I type the keyboard letters pop up a second later and the letters on the notes show up a second later too. How do I fix this issue without downgrading?

Once I updated to iOS 14, all of my Notes with a lot of bulleted lists in them were insanely laggy. At first, I thought it was because of how much text was in there, but other big notes without a lot of lists were fine, and new notes with about 20 started to show issues. My keyboard will intermittently slow down so much that it types by itself for a good 10-15 seconds. It's insane.

Review Settings. I have fixed the problem through Settings, by doing several things. I cannot tell you which one worked but start with the following: disable cellular data on the Notes app, disable Predictive spelling as well as character preview and slide to type on the keyboard page; disable "access within apps" and any other of the zillion things that the phone automatically signed you up for that you never use.

iPhone 6

major issues with this. i tried to copy and paste sections into new notes and still had massive lag. it's ridiculous.

i've also noticed that it can be fine at the top of a note (but sometimes even then has some issues), then scrolling down to a place where i need to start, that's when the lag crops up. i recently cut up notes into two files and trying to test it on the new file, right at the top, got me lag.

i tried deleting the app and re-downloading; i tried resetting the keyboard; i restarted after all these attempts. nothing has fixed it.

this is completely ridiculous and needs fixing asap.

Hoping this helps. ... Hang on .. Sorry, changing these settings does nothing for me. I've had the same issue most notably on ipados - very, very, insane, idiotically, slow typing that does not keep up. [I learned to type ahead 'blind' cause of laggy connections over a 1200 baud modem, youngsters will have to google that - that how slow it is.] Now, typing here in this other app, notably, not Notes, (had to capitalize that myself, see? and there's no lag at all. So bugger all, Apple, this is new to the combination of iPadOS 14.1 and Notes. Haven't checked on MacOS Catalina - cause I can't be arsed.

I’ve piled into this clown bus elsewhere, but HAPPILY note (pun not intended, but what the hey) that the iPadOS 14.2 update changed (fixed?) this. My worst case ‘Note’ instance now rocks with the former speed (alacrity, celerity) as in before the point release that introduced this bug.

TL;DR Bug introduced earlier, appears fixed by iPadOS 14.2

I'm so glad I've found a thread of people experiencing this issue...but I'm less happy seeing that Apple haven't acknowledged it. They need to, because it's become an absolute pain to work with and now the notes app is borderline unbearable. They need to fix it. I can't believe that something so simple and unproblematic for all these years has suddenly become such a hindrance overnight. Extremely infuriating.

Actually got the info from Bougainvillea42

whose original post had a few more ideas as well:

That’s not a workaround as for writing efficiently i use a lot predictive words and slide to type.

Disable Wi-Fi and cellular and closing the app, with battery savings options disabled (both of them) the app isn’t so slow anymore but it’s not as fast as in the past. With medium long notes it keeps feeling sluggish.

I hate rely on third party apps but apple is forcing me to.

Google Docs is more efficient

So far, none of the provided workarounds works for me. I have additionally tried to disable every single automatic text management function while keeping disabled Siri, wifi, iCloud, cellular data, dictate and any other feature that, in my knowledge, could be considered relevant, so this is definitely not a performance issue due to background activities scaling badly with the size of the notes. Also, these notes are indeed structured (many nested bullets) and pretty much lengthy (4 or 5 screens) but I had no issues with any previous IoS version, even in low memory conditions and that was why I loved this system app.

This situation is really frustrating now. If the problem is not officially acknowledged I will consider radical alternatives for Christmas.

Turning cellular data off solves the issue for me. I also have personal hotspot off. It's worth understanding that word-processing programs on computers (and, evidently, on phones as well) start to "act up" and lose memory when a document is too long. One must break it up into several different documents. If your note becomes overlong, end it and begin a new note, 'part two' of the same title. And parts three, four and so on, if you are writing something that is thousands of words long. As a novelist, I have pages and pages of "notes" for whatever book I am writing, and for other books I may be outlining. I add to these notes and modify them all the time, so each Note is very lengthy. I now divide each one into several different "Notes" documents, labeled with the title and I, II,III,IV and so on. And by the way, it's clear by now that no one at Apple reads this. They are very helpful if you call their technical support, however. I have called them for computer issues several times. Not for the iPhone as yet, but we'll see..........

I would not hold my breath for official anything from Apple. Not any more. But had this problem too, and When I updated to the next point release, I found that this problem had been resolved (Both iPad and iPhone). So maybe try updating? I know that rarely fixes anything but, it worked for me on this issue. One thing for sure. If the problem IS fixed in a subsequent release, Apple is NOT going to make a backwards path for an older release, no matter how much you ask/want. Unless it affects security or privacy, which it rarely does.

I'm not gonna argue with you, but it appears that this bug was introduced in some version of iOS/IPadOS 14.x and then escorted out the back and shot (idiom for removed) in a subsequent release. I had this problem too and it was as big a showstopper for my writing project as for anyone else. Long story short, I did update to the subsequent release and that (usual disclaimer) fixed it for both my Phone and iPad. <Whew!>

I should clarify that the note I was working on wasn’t the entire book, just a few pages. It’s strange because I’ve had much longer notes work fine while I added to them, the issue seems to come and go. When I tested just now it wasn’t as bad but still noticeably slower than typing in messenger and safari.

As a writer you can probably understand why I wouldn’t want to turn off the data...
