iOS 14 text notification issues

I am not getting sound notifications on text messages nor is the banner showing up on my locked screen. I have an iPhone 11 and just downloaded the latest iOS 14. Have reset my phone twice now. Please advise. Thank you.

I've also been fighting this notification issue for months on my iPhone 11 Pro. Apple no help. I discovered that turning off bluetooth on my phone fixed the problem (allowed text notifications to sound and appear, whether the phone was locked or not). But with bluetooth on, notifications only sounded & appeared with the phone unlocked. Obviously, I didn't want to leave bluetooth off all the time.

I also came to realize this issue started when I got a new Apple Watch 6 a few months ago. Coincidence? Taking the watch on and off didn't help. And with the watch on, it didn't sound notifications either.

But the posting from StubbornPixie got me thinking about killing the mirror function on the watch for the Messages app. So, iPhone Watch app>Messages>"Custom" "Notifications Off" seems to have SOLVED THE PROBLEM for me. My iPhone 11 Pro now notifies me of incoming text messages with bluetooth on. I realize my watch won't ping with messages until Apple fixes the root problem, but at least I won't be missing message notifications altogether.

Hope this helps others.

I’m not sure if I even had iOS 14 installed or not but my camera roll was acting funny so I did the current update 14.1 and all of a sudden I have this same issue with no sound when texts come in and no banners/notifications when locked. I read what another user did and did the same and it fixed it for me too.

I just went to notifications and turned them off, did a hard reboot, turned notifications back on and it works again. I’ve been messing with all day trying to figure it out and thought I had already done this one but apparently not. HTH someone else. Btw...only read to page 3 so this has probably been mentioned already several times. I apologize if it has.

So we're all clear, the 14.2.1 fix was for text messages not being received at all. It was not addressing the absent text alert/notifications bug of not knowing you have a new text.

I had this bug with my IPhone-X when I upgraded to IOS 14. I now have an iPhone-12 Pro Max with 14.2.1 and the bug remains.

I know we're all here in this forum complaining about this bug but that's not enough. It's not even clear if Apple engineers monitor these forums. What is clear is that feedback reports have to be submitted so that this issue is known as a widespread issue affecting IOS 14 regardless of device.

Please submit that to Apple here:

Thanks everyone!

Hi all, I called and opened a ticket with Apple support yesterday. The lady said the more of us who call the faster it gets escalated to an engineering team. Seems as if they are already aware but it never hurts to bombard them. Just sharing. Call, report the issue, get your case number.

I have been an iPhone user since day 1 back in 2007 and this is definitely ios14 issue. I have found NO solution that has remedied the issue. It’s so intermittent that it’s easy to want to draw correlations when we make one small change and it works for a few. Does it have anything to do with it? Probably not.

Just so everyone is clear and we're all on the same page: when you're in the main chat window (has the list for all of your different text conversations), if you slide one of the contacts to the left, you'll have two options. One of the options is to delete the conversation (red background with with a garbage can icon) and you'll have a second option for Notifications (lavender background with bell ico).

The bell icon with a slash through it means that you WILL get notifications for that contact. The bell with NO slash means notifications for that contact is turned OFF. The slash/no-slash meanings seem counter-intuitive but it is what it is. Just wanting to make we're all on the same page.

I have once again reported this bug to Apple since posting here only gets support from users not apple. This is what I posted.

"My messages no longer make a audible sound on my iwatch or iPhone for the past month - I have tried to restart the phone and watch with no improvement . I have posted on the apple forum. There are 100's of people with the same problem. My wife's phone is an Xr and she has no problem but she doesn't have a watch. I use a Xs Max. We both have the 14.3 OS. I have copied her settings onto my phone but it doesn't fix my problem."

I would strongly suggest sending a similar message to apple on the links provided on earlier posts. Posting frustrations here is only like talking to a wall. It maybe therapy but it doesn't fix the problem or at least notify the people who could fix the problem.

I have also noticed I don't receive the notification on some text messages. When the notification doesn't come through, my apple watch does not get the text message either. Very annoying when my phone is in the other room and I'm trying to log into a website that has two factor authentication. I haven't found a permanent fix but hoping the info below helps apple tech troubleshoot. I'm in the tech field so I tried way too long and documented what I tried (NERD ALERT)! NOTE: I ALWAYS have my phone on silent mode, but when text notifications work, I receive a short vibration (and my apple watch gets the message too. When I don't get the text vibration notification, I don't get it on my watch either). I just purchased my iPhone 12 mini and new watch series 5 last week and I'm running software version 14.3. Below is everything I tried.

Today, I was consistently not receiving my 2 factor messages from a specific short code number (happened to be USAA). I was trying the same things all the other "fixes" said to try and nothing worked. I finally did the following and it worked temporarily (at least 2 times consistently, then stopped again). Unfortunately, this "fix" would have to be done for every contact you want to ensure you get the notification from.

After trial and error, I had already created a contact called "USAA 2 factor", so I clicked on info-->edit-->text tone-->vibration and changed it to "quick" (before it was set to "Staccato (Default)". I tried it again and BAM, received the notification and it went to my watch)!

It worked three times without a problem, then quit working again. Then I set up the contact for work short code two factor, but I can't remember if the adjustment worked on tat one (I don't think it did). So i reset my network settings (settings-->general-->reset-->reset network settings). Once complete, the texts worked three times in a row again. Then stopped again. I also set up a contact for my work two factor account and tested it. The first text notification came through. Subsequent ones didn't. (so the first 3 USAA notifications came through, two more USAA notifications didn't come through. Next I tried work, first one came through, two more did not. So I reset my network settings again. This time I was able to get two work notifications, nothing on the third one, nothing on the fourth one. Went back to try USAA, nothing on the first one. I finally give up.

Also, I was thinking this was only related to "short code" text messages but my father texted while I was waiting for the notification of one of my two factor attempts....NO Notification!!!

Seems to have something to do with the network settings...i tried over wifi and over cellular and got the same results each time. Notifications definitely worked for me for a short period of time afterward. Not sure if it's a count of messages, count of messages from the same person, length of time after network reset or intermittent network something.

So frustrating!!!! Fix it!

I believe that there are multiple problems going on here and it is happening across multiple devices (I have an iPhone 8 Plus) which likely make this notoriously difficult to track down. The only way that I am seeing any messages with notifications is with Bluetooth turned OFF (which surprisingly does not affect the ability of my Apple watch to function). Everyones Bluetooth configuration is going to be very different. Also I have auto-lock turned OFF, as once my phone locks, I will get messages on my screen, but not get audible notifications and my phone spends most of the day on a wireless charger. I have no desire to go through convoluted debugging procedures (and reset my phone) with Apple as all examples of that I have read about here seem to end inconclusively. Apple needs to have a way of collecting settings data across multiple devices to see if there is any sort of common factor.
