iOS 14 text notification issues

I am not getting sound notifications on text messages nor is the banner showing up on my locked screen. I have an iPhone 11 and just downloaded the latest iOS 14. Have reset my phone twice now. Please advise. Thank you.

I've also been fighting this notification issue for months on my iPhone 11 Pro. Apple no help. I discovered that turning off bluetooth on my phone fixed the problem (allowed text notifications to sound and appear, whether the phone was locked or not). But with bluetooth on, notifications only sounded & appeared with the phone unlocked. Obviously, I didn't want to leave bluetooth off all the time.

I also came to realize this issue started when I got a new Apple Watch 6 a few months ago. Coincidence? Taking the watch on and off didn't help. And with the watch on, it didn't sound notifications either.

But the posting from StubbornPixie got me thinking about killing the mirror function on the watch for the Messages app. So, iPhone Watch app>Messages>"Custom" "Notifications Off" seems to have SOLVED THE PROBLEM for me. My iPhone 11 Pro now notifies me of incoming text messages with bluetooth on. I realize my watch won't ping with messages until Apple fixes the root problem, but at least I won't be missing message notifications altogether.

Hope this helps others.

This may have already been within but I figured I’d ask-does everyone having the issue have iMessage enabled in iCloud? I realized I didn’t start noticing issues with this on my 11 Pro Max until iOS 14. This is about the same time I had enabled iMessages in iCloud. Problems persisted when restoring backup to my 12 pro max. I just turned off iMessage in iCloud settings this evening to see if that makes any difference.

I have had this problem for months now. I have several Apple devices. Some older some new. Currently I have and use a 2014 MAC Mini, a iPad Air 2, iPhone 4s (WiFi only for music,) Watch 3, Watch 4, iPad 12.9 (2nd Gen,) iPad 10.5, and just bought an iPhone 12. I had a iPhone 7 which had the same problem of no notifications. I upgraded partly hoping the newer iPhone would solve this issue. It did not. I use the iPhone 12 and the Watch 4 as daily devices. The watch is paired with the iPhone as it should be. When I receive an iMessage or a SMS, or an email, the phone does nothing, no sounds, no Lock Screen notification, The phone is not muted, and the volume is up. The phone has been setup to provide audible and visual notifications. The Watch 4, or the Watch 3 are up to date, and setup the same way. With the Watch 4 and iPhone 12 if a message comes in, again the phone does nothing, the watch DOES NOT make a sound, but DOES give me a small tick with haptics. But nothing on its screen unless I manually wake it. I get the same thing with a received email. Curious when I receive a phone call, it all works as expected, the iPhone 12 sounds my ringtone, the Watch 4 dingles its ring sound and I get normal haptic vibration, and the watch shows me who’s calling. So phone calls work, nothing else does. If I have my iPhone unlocked, it will play the message sound and show a banner. If I lock the phone and I receive a message, nothing happens. After reading some advice on a forum, to turn off Bluetooth, the phone will work like it should with messages and emails. This is an unacceptable workaround as it defeats the main purpose of the Watch 4. This is clearly a software bug, as it has persisted through various iOS updates, and in my case going from iPhone 7 to a iPhone 12. The behavior between iPhone and Watch when paired has to be right or I will just sell both Watch’s and go back to FitBit or some other watch device. Pairing the Watch 4 with the health app is the main reason I paid up for an Apple Watch instead of a much cheaper device. Help!

I don't believe anyone has found a one size fits all resolution to this one.

My personal journey has led me to the point where I'm just waiting for Apple to address and dealing with it because I just don't have the time to do a full restore, which others have indicated won't help anyway. I have turned off iMessage in iCloud and that didn't do anything.

This is clearly a software issue speaking specifically towards the issue where a message (mine have only been with iMessages) comes in but is put in this "already read" sort of setup with no notification or bubble on the messages app.

It's hit or miss because I've had multiple contacts do it. Some times are better than others. I haven't found killing the messages app to really do anything. It all seems to be very intermittent-sometimes I get all notifications, others I miss a few messages a day...

hopefully Apple can address soon. I am planning to call Apple support to get a ticket opened.

I tweeted apple support and they have been DM ing me about it. I got cross and said this isn’t my problem this is thousands of people when they wanted screenshots. I said there’s nothing to see because there’s no notifications. They are now saying “We understand your position and we will do all we can to help. We ask certain questions and ask to see certain pages to help us craft the best troubleshooting route for the issue. “

so I’ll do all the things they ask and if any of them work I’ll report back here straight away.

Might be worth contacting them on Twitter if you are there @Applesupport they will message you back and maybe they’ll hurry up a bit with it

So I have had just had the below back from Twitter support

You are correct. Thanks for confirming. Because this is only happening with text messages and iMessage, we wanted to let you know that we’ve heard reports of the issue you're describing, and it’s currently under review. We don’t have a solution at this time, but recommend that you keep your device up-to-date using Software Update.

thought I would let you all know 👍🏻

I too am having the same issues. I’m simply not receiving audio text and message notifications. Just the other day I received texts from 4 people in the same short time period; the only notifications I received came from those 2 using Android. But not all Android are getting through, I’m missing audio (and now haptic) notifications from family who use Android. Texts from iOS, have almost now chance of giving me an audio indication, and those from services/ politicians have a very good chance of showing up and interrupting what I’m doing (strangely, not Amazon, though). Location based notifications work great for Target/Walmart/Best Buy with a high level of annoyance if I fail to close those apps.

I thought the problem was with my iPad intercepting messages and texts, but iMessage has been turned off on it for the last month/month and a half.

The only change in my Apple universe was my Apple Watch battery expanded and broke in September, but I was already having issues with random notifications only appearing on the iPad. Everything else is the same (ATT and WiFi).

As for checking DND, I’m not receiving these notifications for my exclusions - those allowed to contact me after hours.

Sorry. I refuse to go “nuclear” on the phone as I had a corrupt backup when wiping/restoring the iPad in October.

It's definitely tied to IOS 14. The network providers are not part of this particular issue as it affects iPhones on all the major players in the US. I've also tried (along with many others in this thread) various work-arounds but none have proven successful other than the two I listed earlier. Many of us have tired different variants of different work-arounds. It's frustrating to say the least but hopefully a fix will show up in the next release.

If I were you, I'd stay on 13.5 for now. I'm running iPhone 12 Pro Max with 14.3, no iPad and no watch. Never have had either one. Notification alerts are sporadic. The bug got better with 14.3 but it's not completely fixed as I'll still notice that I won't be notified of a new text. It just doesn't happen as often as it did on the IOS 14 versions that are not 14.3 (ex:14.2.1).

I had my IPhone-X prior to my Pro Max and when I updated my IPhone-X device to IOS 14, the text notification alert was introduced. Again, I'd stay on IOS 13 for now.

I tried the silent notification change in iMessage on my wife's message and. Now I get nothing on my watch or phone. I put it back to the setting it was on. Instead, I at least get a ding for my important contacts on my watch by changing emergency bypass to on in the contacts app for text messaging. I did that for the ringtone as well so now I know when my wife is texting of calling. even with silent mode set on the watch. I don't get any notification alert on my phone, only my watch.

I agree it’s a software issue, however there’s got to be some other factor involved. None of my family or friends is having this issue but it’s clear from this forum a lot of people are. I just wonder if the percentage is too small for Apple to take seriously

i noticed something else I wonder if it is related. Sometimes when I lock my phone it doesn’t make the “lock sound”. Usually if I unlock it and relock it does make the sound. I wonder if the lack of notifications has any correlation to it not making a sound when I lock it. I’ve also had other random volume control issues - namely if I turn the volume down using the side buttons in a game, when I return to the Home Screen I am unable to adjust the ringer volume until I force quit the other app - otherwise the buttons adjust the sound volume instead of the ringer. Could all be related.

About the “click when locking” my iPhone 12 skips on this sound from time to time too. Thought I was going deaf. I also experience the notification issue in messages. Just today I even didn’t get a reminder notification. My iPad made a sound in the other room but the phone remained silent. It’s a notification that repeats daily and used to go to both of my devices all the time.

something weird is happening here....
