iOS 14 text notification issues

I am not getting sound notifications on text messages nor is the banner showing up on my locked screen. I have an iPhone 11 and just downloaded the latest iOS 14. Have reset my phone twice now. Please advise. Thank you.

I've also been fighting this notification issue for months on my iPhone 11 Pro. Apple no help. I discovered that turning off bluetooth on my phone fixed the problem (allowed text notifications to sound and appear, whether the phone was locked or not). But with bluetooth on, notifications only sounded & appeared with the phone unlocked. Obviously, I didn't want to leave bluetooth off all the time.

I also came to realize this issue started when I got a new Apple Watch 6 a few months ago. Coincidence? Taking the watch on and off didn't help. And with the watch on, it didn't sound notifications either.

But the posting from StubbornPixie got me thinking about killing the mirror function on the watch for the Messages app. So, iPhone Watch app>Messages>"Custom" "Notifications Off" seems to have SOLVED THE PROBLEM for me. My iPhone 11 Pro now notifies me of incoming text messages with bluetooth on. I realize my watch won't ping with messages until Apple fixes the root problem, but at least I won't be missing message notifications altogether.

Hope this helps others.

I am in process of doing Software Update to 14.3, will report back. Looks very promising that the notes for the upgrade did mention the problems we are having. Too bad Apple didn't let their support staff know this fix was in the works. I bet they are beyond frustrated (gotta be hard for them to be out there trying to help us and dealing with customer frustration!)

So far so good on my end. Texts behavior is back to normal for me. I've got banners, audible tones and hepatic feedback with new texts since updating to 14.3. I'll continue to monitor this but I've never been able to get through a day without being affected by the issue.

FYI: I can't speak to other apps (WHATSAPP, etc) since either I didn't have those apps or wasn't affected by those apps not working correctly.

Update to 14.3 helped SOME. But I still get iMessages to phone that are there… but no haptic, no audio, no screen lighting up. It's probably 50% better so far. But it's still intermittent.

My issue is related to cell tower signal strength (I think). There's ONE spot in my house (my work desk, lucky me) where this happens most. Ironically, it's iMessages that fail. Apple's own app.

Yes. I've tried it with iMessage off on work machine. Work machine on/off. Bluetooth on/off. Wifi on/off. About 5 clean installs. 12 hours on phone with tech support.

I've reset every setting there is. No magic answer has risen to the top and worked.

I just wondered as sometimes iMessage problems can happen on a network providers and as well. If you see Apple software updates on Twitter, they posted that today they will be kind of shutting down and not releasing any more updates until sometime next year. iOS 14.4 is currently in beta, but you could always try out to see if it fixes the problem?

I had this issue until I updated to 14.3!! Try restarting again maybe mine is working just fine now!!! But yes I was totally frustrated missing my texts too!! Even on the phone I didn’t get notifications!! I did have to set my banners tho so it would pop up and that worked till the newest update!! Everything is working great now except the repeat text notifications when I u lock my phone but better then no notifications! lol good luck!

Still on ios 13.5, and reading this doubtful to upgrade.

However some comments seems confused with the apple watch functionality. You should know that by design, if you have watch notifications activated on the watch, when the iphone is locked notifications will only display on the watch. This has been like this since the watch was introduced.

Questions:

  • Those with Apple Watch. Do you get your notifications on the watch when the iphone is locked?
  • Those without apple watch. Are you also not receiving notifications?

I have also been having this issue. I sent a review to Apple but they didn't have the newest version of the update 14.2.1 which is still having the text message issues.

Please, Apple, fix this. I'd much prefer to get a text while using my phone and swipe it up so I know about it, rather than not knowing about it and missing an important text for a long period of time.

I have the same issue and unfortunately the Apple techs are helpless in doing anything about it. Most don't even know it's an issue. I just got a brand new iPhone 12 sent to me to replace the one that had the missing sound notification issue because the tech thought it might be a hardware issue. It's definitely a software issue and I wish I had those 2 hours back transferring data and setting up the new phone. More worrisome for me is I that depend on the audible notifications to alert me of a low blood sugar through my Dexcom app and now my health is at risk from not getting these alerts. Why isn't this getting more attention from the media and the Apple software engineers? Very disappointed in how Apple is handling this.

My sons iPhone 8 has been doing this for around a month now which is strange that my 11 works as usual, with the same updates. I’ve tried all the tips I’ve seen on here, restarting, turning off Bluetooth, checking to make sure alerts are on for all contacts... to no avail. He will get the visual notification (red number) when his phone is awake, a sound and visual if his message app is open and absolutely nothing if his phones asleep. Why would I stay with apple when it seems there is no rush or intention of fixing this issue??

I don’t get the text notification at all on my phone (not even a red bubble).

I get a little bubble on my watch, but only if I notice it myself. I don’t get a vibration or a sound on my watch for a text either.

so literally the only way that I know I have a message is if I either open the app on my phone or look at my watch to see if there is a bubble. I have to actively seek multiple times a day to see if I have gotten messages and often times I am responding to important messages hours after I should.

Everything worked perfectly on all my devices until I updated to the latest iOS. No settings were changed.

I posted a while ago that the 14.3 update fixed it, but it’s still here. The issue will still occur when I’m actively on my phone. No notifications, vibration or anything. I just un-pinned the main conversation that I have noticed it happening, and turned off the send from another device setting. I think that one device is doing the notification and none of the others do. We’ll see if that does it.

PLEASE fix the text notification alert issue!

Apple is not reading here. You can contact them through the Contact Support link at the top right of every page of these forums.

ALSO DO NOT WANT TO WIPE EVERYTHING OUT AND START OVER...TOO MUCH WILL BE LOST AND UNRETREIVABLE.

If you back up your phone then restore it from the back up, you won't lose anything.
