iOS 14 text notification issues

I am not getting sound notifications on text messages nor is the banner showing up on my locked screen. I have an iPhone 11 and just downloaded the latest iOS 14. Have reset my phone twice now. Please advise. Thank you.

Like many on here I had been having many of the same issues, missing all sorts of notifications, not just text since upgrading to ios 14 (first 14.1 then 14.2). Here is what fixed my issue... I went to settings->notifications->messages (for this example) and scrolled down to the options section. For the show previews section the "when unlocked (default)" was selected, meaning only notifications would only appear when the phone is unlocked when is hardly ever the case. I switched it always and the issue is now gone. I had to go into may other apps one by one and toggle this option back to always. Showing previews only when unlocked was 100% not my setting before this update.

What is interesting/****** me off is my wife just upgraded to ios14 and did not have issue. I went into her phone to settings->notifications->messages and for her show previews option was selected as "always (default)". Why on her phone she has options listed as "always (default)" and on my is "always" and "when unlocked (default)" I have no clue.

Thanks Apple!

When I updated to 14.2 a new feature popped up in my contacts that i can only view when I am contacted under the text message ( not in the contact feature ) it’s called “ hide alert “

when I turn that off that contact functions normally

updating to 14.3 allows only the contacts to which I have turned that feature off to function normally

all contacts who have yet to contact me will not give me an audible notification until i manually change this feature

Had the exact same problem.

The only thing that works is uninstalling and installing the apps again.

I got the free trial of apple one which includes 50Gbs of iCloud and I used that for backup.

trust me

nothing else works.

uninstall and install them again and remember to select “allow notifications” when you reinstall.

Apple has repeatedly stated that we are basically at their mercy. The last 14 iOS update was never promised to fix this issue, and it’s apparent that technicians and developers don’t read these threads. Apple has also said that they don’t know when they’ll be releasing an update with a bug fix for this. I did however see that turning off your Face ID awareness fixes the problem for some people. I haven’t tried it just yet. Apple sure did a bang up job.

I have also been having this issue. I sent a review to Apple but they didn't have the newest version of the update 14.2.1 which is still having the text message issues.

Please, Apple, fix this. I'd much prefer to get a text while using my phone and swipe it up so I know about it, rather than not knowing about it and missing an important text for a long period of time.

So I updated to the 14.3 and still not working. I had someone text from another iPhone and the notification only went to my watch. My Lock Screen did not light up. I notice this is happening with my emails too. Notifications for other apps (Twitter, Facebook, etc) DO show up on my Lock Screen. The settings for all of those are exactly the same. I only get a notification if my phone is unlocked. Like when I’m responding to a text and get another one from someone else. I hear their text tone and it shows up as a banner. So frustrating because people think I’m ignoring them.

Currently, there is no fix for it and Apple hasn't mentioned it in their release notes for beta iOS 14.4.

Various work-arounds in this thread with random & limited success. The only one that has actually worked for me is to kill the text window (swipe it away) after EVERY text that is sent OR received. It's an awful work-around but that's the only that has worked for me.

I believe I found the fix. In the text message conversation, go to the very top and tap on on the i/info at the top right. In the menue that pops up, there is an option called "hide alerts". Disable that -- I now get alerts for this conversation again.

Needless to say, I never activated this feature -- I suspect that for old contacts that were carried over into the new version, somehow this might sometimes be checked by default without us knowing?

It's also possible that not everyone posting in this thread is actually having the same problem, with the same solution. But I hope this helps somebody out there!

if you check the conversations where this happens (by going to the conversation, tap on the person at the top and go to "info", is the "hide alerts" option checked?

Because that's what I discovered did this to me. Yes, it disables the sound, the lockscreen thing, every aspect of getting notified of new texts.

It seems that they added this new feature, to hide alerts for specific people -- that's fine by me -- but the problem is that it randomly activates after the update, for certain conversations. I believe if you uncheck the option though it should fix it permanently for that conversation thread at least.
