iOS 14 text notification issues

I am not getting sound notifications on text messages nor is the banner showing up on my locked screen. I have an iPhone 11 and just downloaded the latest iOS 14. Have reset my phone twice now. Please advise. Thank you.

Like many on here I had been having many of the same issues, missing all sorts of notifications, not just text since upgrading to ios 14 (first 14.1 then 14.2). Here is what fixed my issue... I went to settings->notifications->messages (for this example) and scrolled down to the options section. For the show previews section the "when unlocked (default)" was selected, meaning only notifications would only appear when the phone is unlocked when is hardly ever the case. I switched it always and the issue is now gone. I had to go into may other apps one by one and toggle this option back to always. Showing previews only when unlocked was 100% not my setting before this update.

What is interesting/****** me off is my wife just upgraded to ios14 and did not have issue. I went into her phone to settings->notifications->messages and for her show previews option was selected as "always (default)". Why on her phone she has options listed as "always (default)" and on my is "always" and "when unlocked (default)" I have no clue.

Thanks Apple!

I’m also having the issue of receiving a text on my iPhone 11 Pro, but not getting a notification that I received the text. I’ve gone into settings to make sure all notifications are on and my phone isn’t on silent, but nothing is working. Sometimes I get notifications and sometimes they turn off. I also get them to my Apple watch sometimes, but then when I take it off (and it’s locked to not receive notifications) my phone still doesn’t give notifications. I also have friends dealing with the same issue! This is super annoying and needs to be fixed!

Updated to 14.3 last night and notification sounds are not working, with or without bluetooth. I turned off the exposure notifications, rebooted, repaired bluetooth, ran diags on the bluetooth...nothing is working. Why will Apple not fix this? Clearly it's been going on for a while. Unacceptable. Thank goodness it's not my personal phone but it does affect my job if I miss notifications. I can't be looking at the phone to see a banner pop up (if it even does) all the **** time. Fix this. Super poor work by the programmers and the company to not get it fixed.

I cannot believe it! My iPhone SE has a tiny switch located upper in the left lateral. It is for "hardware silent". It shows yellow when ON. I'd never used it before. It seems I accidentally moved and provoked the problem. Every "notification when blocked" problem was solved when I switched it back to OFF. I hope this can help some users! Thanks for the support.

I believe that there are multiple problems going on here and it is happening across multiple devices (I have an iPhone 8 Plus) which likely make this notoriously difficult to track down. The only way that I am seeing any messages with notifications is with Bluetooth turned OFF (which surprisingly does not affect the ability of my Apple watch to function). Everyones Bluetooth configuration is going to be very different. Also I have auto-lock turned OFF, as once my phone locks, I will get messages on my screen, but not get audible notifications and my phone spends most of the day on a wireless charger. I have no desire to go through convoluted debugging procedures (and reset my phone) with Apple as all examples of that I have read about here seem to end inconclusively. Apple needs to have a way of collecting settings data across multiple devices to see if there is any sort of common factor.

Let me ask once again:

Has this issue been acknowledged by Apple? Are they even trying o fix it? How many users are affected? Maybe not enough for them to care?

Let me state once again:

This is a user-to-user technical support forum. No one participating here would know the answer to that.

What I can tell you is that, based on how few threads there are on this issue, it most likely affects a relatively small number of people. And, it's likely that it's really more than one issue. Rare, intermittent bugs are the hardest to troubleshoot.

I know it is user-to-user board but some “user” might have recently contacted support and learned something.

also - is that related to the device or Apple ID itself? It’s hard to believe that both my se2020 and now my iPhone 12 suffer from this issue and both were faulty. I’m thinking about switching to android because of that and that’s sad...

I would just like some help with this. I’m not a technical person or an IT specialist so I was hoping for someone to enlighten me why this happens on the first place.

Jan 26, 2021 2:33 PM in response to marcin57

I don’t believe anyone really knows why it happens. No one that I know of who has it knows how to fix it and no one who has reported it has received an answer on what to do about it.

It’s a bug

I do remember reading a little while ago about someone who reset their phone I’m wondering if after resetting it whether or not It fixed the problem if they completely rebuild it without using it back up or restored it

As I said before, I called Apple Suppont at least five times, I left my phone in the store for a physical check and of course I wrote mails, send pictures, videos and messages I have been totally ignored, the answer is that the phone doesn't show hardware issues so the can't give me a new one... the thing is, like you say, that only some of us are experiencing this.

I hate this, my first iPhone and surely my last one

14.3 release notes mentioned that they addressed the bug but no joy. As bug returned. 14.4 release notes make no mention of it at all.

For those asking about a rebuild, it's been done countless times by many users in this thread from a fresh IOS install via ITunes and then restored from the cloud. It'll correct the issue temporarily but the bug eventually returns.

For reference as that we're all on the same page, I'm only speaking about iMessage/SMS notifications and not any other app/service (WhatsApp, etc). Also, I don't have nor have I ever had any other Apple products (iPad, watch, MAC) other than my iPhones.

Continue to contact Apple via their feedback link as Apple engineers do not read these forums. These forums are for user discussions.

I'm running IOS 14.4 on my IPhone 12 Pro Max. First saw the bug when I installed IOS 14 on my IPhone-X.

Text notifications are working for me now. It wasn’t the update that fixed it though as they were still not working after I installed 14.4. I have an XS Max

A few weeks ago I was messing with the date and time and received a text message when the date was set to Feb 2, 2021. I didn’t make the connection then, but that is when I started not getting text notifications at all after I reverted back to the correct date.

That message had stayed at the top of my message list despite getting many messages after it but I had not made the connection that the date was wrong on that particular message.

I finally deleted the “future” messages, restarted my phone and now have text notifications.

I really don't like the latest update that has been pushed out. Since I'm having to remote into my work computer I am required to install all updates to my iPhone. I'm finding the latest update extremely frustrating. My boss and I are having to rotate days we are in the office so we do a lot of communication via text messages. Since our office is a designated safe zone it makes it difficult to send or receive messages, so it was helpful to know that my message was delivered and read. Now I have no idea if she has read any of my messages. This is a huge problem when I'm on the phone with a student or parent and I need an answer from my boss and I have no idea whether she has read my message. Now is not the time for this kind of problem apple needs to get this problem fixed asap!
