Why is 1TB of storage being used for health app?

Why does it say that my health app is taking up 1TB of storage? Is this a bug for iOS 14?

Hi all,

I have the exact same problem. I've spent 1 hour and 10 minutes on the phone with 3 different Apple support people today - the last person I spoke to was from the Health team (apparently) and even he was stumped at first. For context, my phone is an iPhone 11 Pro 256GB, of which, I've used 71.7GB of data, however, my Health app is 1.61TB. The bar is completely coloured in red like the OP. Following investigation, the Apple representative told me that the engineers are aware of this and I should keep a look out for an update. I asked what I should do in the meantime in regards to backing up my iPhone (as neither the Cloud or my Mac are capable, as they both think I have too much data) and his response was that there was nothing else he could do. I get that this isn't his fault, and I know he doesn't have a magic wand, but this is frustrating to the extreme. What's even worse is there are posts about this back in Mar-20 if you Google it, so either this is an ongoing issue (meaning resolution will not be quick) or it's an issue that has been resolved in the past but has cropped up again (perhaps due to IOS 14). I'm hoping for the latter, as in theory the engineers will know how to fix this if they've done it before.

I don't know for definite, but I'd assume the more people that phone up, then the higher priority this will receive, as such, any one who hasn't called yet might consider phoning up Apple and logging this. If you do, be careful of the 1st line team, as the lady I spoke to was just trying to sell me additional storage space on the Cloud... I had to insist that I had over 600GB of my 1TB drive spare on my Mac, and that there was no way my phone could take up this much room!

not only did I have an with the 1.6tb of health data, I also didn’t have a current back up on my Apple Watch to back up new one too. Turned off health data, did a back up, turned it back on n did a back up. Restored content/settings. Cleared the health data storage and was able to pair my new Apple Watch with current data. Job done!

Hi All,

Following on from Amy's post, I'm currently on with Apple Support (after being passed around to a few people) and the guy I'm talking to is taking me through steps to resolve this which he says are from the engineer - as with Amy, they've started by unpairing my phone and now getting me to erase all settings! The guy has told me that this will take a few minutes and he'll call me back to finish the final steps - if this works for me, and if I do not lose any data, then I will post how to do it on here... watch this space... oh and wish me luck!

It's not going great at present... the health issue has been fixed and I don't appear to have lost any data, although the exercise I did whilst this issue was going on that wasn't recorded hasn't appeared... I had hoped that it was stored somewhere and would show up when the issues were cleared, but no such luck. My biggest issue is I've lost a weeks worth of WhatsApp messages, as these weren't backed up automatically (could be worse I guess) and my Apple Watch has reverted to the set-up I had 3 weeks ago on my series 3... I spent a lot of time organising my series 6 and I have to do all of that again. I'm currently going through a full restore to iron other issues, and I've spent nearly 2 hours on the phone today with Apple support. Expecting a call back at 2pm GMT, so might have more info then. What I've gleaned from all this is that the only way (at present) to fix this is by doing a hard reset... most data (except WhatsApp and the Watch set-up) appears to be backed up despite the Health App issue, so this should restore as mine has.

It's been quite a complicated process and so I do not feel comfortable advising people to do what I've done in case it doesn't work for them. All I would say is to call Apple again, as they now have advice how to fix this issue form the Engineers but you may lose some stuff :( I feel for the the individual who cannot even open his WhatsApp as he has no way to back this up.

If I have any more info after speaking with the Apple advisor at 2pm, I'll come back to you all.

Hi Amy - don't get me wrong, I find Apple support really helpful as well (whilst some are better than others, they are all very polite). My annoyance isn't with them, it's with Apple itself. I moved over from Windows some years ago as I was so frustrated with the constant updates and the fact that some of these wouldn't work for say a Dell computer when they would for HP for example. The big appeal of Apple was that it uses a closed system (if I'm using the right terminology) which to me meant everything just works with minimal fuss - I'm not the greatest when it comes to technology so this was a big plus factor. However, for the last couple of years now, every time there is a major update I have some crazy issue... last year I lost over 100 playlists I'd spent ages creating, and this year I've lost data again. Whilst Apple support are really helpful, I shouldn't have to spend hours on the phone with them to fix something that shouldn't be an issue in the first place. Perhaps I'm being unfair given the amount of technology involved, but I've spent a small fortune on all of my Apple equipment over the years and so I expect more from my investment - perhaps I just need a new mindset and accept that Apple have grown too fast and haven't retained the standard they were once known for.

Anyway, moan over :) The first thing I will do going forwards is turn off automatic updates... next year, I'm going to wait a good month before I update my IOS!

Anyway, back to setting my Watch up from scratch!

1) That was a direct reply to a forum user, indicating there is a high probability Apple is aware of this, since hundreds of entries here means tens of feedbacks at Apple (probably) and also there are people who directly contacted Apple, so they are aware probably.

2) the fact that me having an issue being lower than me being COVID does not make the issue non-important, so I don’t get what you mean by that.

Yes, Apple is aware of the issue, but the fact they they are aware has nothing to do with this message thread. Apple is aware because people contacted Apple Support about it. This forum is not Apple support. And posting to this message thread does not make Apple any more aware than they already are. HOWEVER, contacting Apple Support gives them additional diagnostic information and may help Apple in finding a solution that does not result in data loss.

Hi - same as you, the storage is now resolved but it's thrown up 2 new issues, my photos widget isn't working (which isn't a big deal tbh) and my activity tracker is no longer working, so my move, exercise or stand counters are not increasing no matter what I do. The Apple agent called me back at 4pm (a bit later than planned, but he was stuck on another call). He said, that the engineers are aware of these new problems and are working on them as a priority. I've unpaired and restored my phone about 8 times today, and he even had me set up as a new watch to see if that changed anything, but it of course didn't work!

So, I've gone from one issue to another and I've wasted most of my day speaking to Apple and clearing / restoring data on my phone and watch. So fed up with this now!

Also, as a side note, the Apple guy said they've had lots of problems with the IOS 14.02 beta (e.g. Face ID is not working) so he thinks they will skip this and go straight to 14.03! Not sure what the new iPhone will come preloaded with, but I certainly will not be buying one.

Wow that’s terrible... now I definitely will be waiting for an update clearly the backup restore is not a solution for everyone and terrible that it only cropped up new issue for you. I’m shocked that 14.0.2 isn’t out yet. I guess theyre just going to give us 14.1 once the new iPhone 12 is announced on next week, the 13th I believe?

Why is 1TB of storage being used for health app?
