iOS 14 / Watch OS 7 Fitness and Health Apps issues

So, I have a couple of big issues with Apple Watch (Watch OS 7) and iPhone (iOS 14) and the Fitness and Health Apps:

  1. Workouts that I record on watch don’t transfer to iPhone Health App anymore. The rings in Fitness App on iPhone do reflect the workout, but the workouts themselves don’t show up anymore. Worked perfectly in iOS 13, function is dead since update to iOS 14.
  2. Fitness App on iPhone does not correctly sync to Health App on iPhone anymore in iOS 14. Example, steps at the end of the day in Healt App on iPhone are 30 to 50% below what Fitness App on same iPhone shows (Fitness App on iPhone though is in line with Fitness App on Apple Watch).
  3. Fitness App on iPhone shows wrong information. Example, I have Stand goal now at 10 of 12 hours which Fitness App on iPhone Shows correctly, however only 7 of the turquoise bars are highlighted.
  4. In iOS 13, resting energy was estimated and recorded in Health even if Apple watch was not worn, eg at night. In iOS 14, Health records resting energy only when watch is worn, which results in a wrong overall number for the day (this causes other apps like LoseIt to work incorrectly).

Anybody else with similar issues?

So this appears to be the official solution for now:

I did the entire reset of both my iPhone and Apple Watch as detailed above. As time consuming and inconvenient as it is, it appears to have corrected all of the issues I had with the flow of health data from my watch to my health app and onward to other apps such as LoseIt and AutoSleep.

Hello All - I have had similar issues with this upgrade with iPhone 8 and Apple Watch 5. I reported earlier in the week.

I noted a few users suggested backing up the phone and then deleting everything on the phone and restore again from back up.

I have done this, I backed up using iTunes on my MAC (I did not use encryption) Deleted everything from the phone and restored. The watch detected the resorted phone automatically and reconnected without any intervention from me.

This does seem to have resolved the issues! The missing workouts are visible and the active energy numbers are correct i.e equal to move energy. My 3rd Party Nurition App is reporting active energy correctly too.

I hope this helps!

Hi! So, I went through the pain of wiping both phone and watch and then setting up new from backup and pairing watch again. That solved all of the watch to phone connectivity issues and the sync issues between Fitness App and Health App.

However, I lost all recorded paths from all previous outdoor workouts including those from way back before the iOS 14 update. I have mixed emotions about this, as this basically means that Apple lost iCloud data and I have my documents and photos there as well.

I ended up backing up and restoring my phone and watch and while it took a good long time to get everything set, it is now syncing data properly between my devices. So far, it seems workouts are saving properly with map and heart rate data. The info in health matches what’s in the fitness app.

However, it looks like the GPS routes for all my past runs are gone. There’s a map with a starting point, but nothing else. From what I can tell, all the backup data has finished syncing but losing all that data is a pretty huge bummer. Makes me feel a lot less confident about using these things going forward.

After installing iOS 14.2, closing and reopening the Fitness app, all data was back (GPS, all trainings, stand hours, etc. that had been missing/had been incomplete). So the parsing appears to have been fixed with this update and as suspected by others the raw data was there all along.

I may make sense to mention that I hadn't reset any device in the meantime since the bug appeared, but simply waited for the fix.

Same here, backup and restore for both watch and iPhone resolved the sync-issues. However, same as with you, all past GPS routes are gone - even for hiking/ biking / running that occurred under iOS 13 way back when.

Apple, that’s not cool!

Now that raises the question if iCloud is a safe storage place. I have all my pictures there and only there! Have to think of a backup strategy now ...

I had the very same problem. What I have learned since, is that on one of the watch updates it has reset the motion and fitness tracking that sends the info to the phone. You find this in the privacy settings on the watch. I’ve turned this on(reset the watch and voila) and although it’s too early to say right now, but it’s starting to track as expected.

Hi,

It appears that 14.2 solves all the problems and some earlier problems with syncing and maps etc.

As this had taken so long with little understanding that Apple were actually looking into it, I opted for the full reset on both devices. What I did notice was that I still had the problems until I completed a walk/workout off at least 20 minutes or so. That seemed to fix everything. This is for any issues that may re-occur, but really does look like 14.2 is the better way forward.

14.0.1/7.0.2 - It’s been over two weeks since performing the Apple suggested “nuclear” erase and reinstall. All runs and walks appear and I’m reasonably happy. Oddly the “trending” data hasn’t counted or averaged any walks or runs so my arrows point down even though they should be up by a wide margin. I’m reluctant to upgrade to 14.1; I think I’ll do my morning run and think about an update later.🤔

IOS 14.2 is supposed to fix all the issues. Agreed the time and apparent lack of communication along the way didn’t help, but things seem to be working now. Not everyone has had historical data linked back and working, but all new data should be ok

You probably want to contact Apple support, as they can be quite helpful if you get the right operative.
