iPhone Fitness app and Apple Watch Activity app not syncing

Ever since I updated my iphone to ios 14 activity app isn't working properly.

Indoor walk gets recorded in the watch but does not show up in the activity app, outdoor walk workouts are missing, route track map does not appear any more. I tried restarting phone and watch and even unpaired and paired the watch again but no luck.

Does anyone else has similar issues?

Looks like there are lots of bugs in activity app in ios14

I too had this same issue.

I've been working with Apple Support and engineering to fix this, well my problem at least.

I'm happy to say that all is fixed for me, my maps, awards, move streaks are all there and showing.

To start, make sure your data is really there. Look in your health app on the phone.

go to Workouts then scroll all the way down to Show all workout Routes

Tap that and see if the data is really there.

If it is here are the steps that Apple gave me to follow and it worked.

This involves wiping the watch and the phone.

You must use the iCloud back up

  1. Make sure that under iCloud, you have toggle on Health Settings>your name>iCloud>Health>make sure this is toggle on
  2. UnPair your watch from the phone (Watch>All Watches>Your watch tap the !> then tap unpair Apple Watch
  3. Perform an iCloud backup Settings>your name>iCloud>Backup>Tap back up now
  4. In the health app, tap your picture bubble on the top right, scroll down to the very bottom and make sure that the data has been back up. It this does not show the correct date, do nothing else as it will fail and your data will not be correct.
  5. iPhone>Settings>General>Rest>Erase all contents and settings
  6. Restore iPhone from iCloud backup
  7. Repair your watch to the iPhone
  8. Restore Watch from iCloud back up

This is what I was told to do and it worked.

Proceed at your own risk.

I can confirm that the Workaround Option 2 works. I'm not so sure about Workaround Option 1. (THANK YOU latzke for tracking this down and your excellent post!)

I typically ride my bike using Apple Watch activity together with my iPhone in my pocket and have been having troubles that everyone else on this thread is having. However, I have observed that my activity DOES upload if I first open the Fitness app on the iPhone and THEN end my workout. I was not doing this before and it was unreliable whether or not the activity tracked on my watch would sync to the iPhone.

I found this out by doing a test by tracking my ride in three segments: 1-Using Runkeeper, 2-Using Stravia, 3-Using Apple Watch Activity

My Move and Exercise stats reflect all three segments and both Runkeeper and Stravia. All three segments show up in Workouts as well USING the Workaround Option 2 technique of opening the Activity app on the iPhone before ending my workout on the Apple Watch.

There is no map tracked under workouts for all three rides, however, Stravia DID track my map. Apple Watch Activity and Runkeeper did not. I may not have all of my privacy setting correct, but if you want to track your activity and your map, it looks to me like Stravia is currently working.

Some more info, in the Health app, Cycling Distance, Exercise Minutes and Workouts all tracked correctly. Without using Workaround Option 2, I was getting segments of these stats missing with gaps in the heart rate monitoring as well. No gaps on my test today.

Hope this helps someone until they fix the issues...

An absolute joke. Apple please take this seriously and get a software update out ASAP to resolve this.

I’m having the same issues, data missing, syncs not in sync, holes in my activity, invisible bars for stand. Inaccurate readings for work outs, out of whack resting calorie burn etc etc etc.

A shambolic iOS release of the highest order. Please fix this and get us a decent update out immediately. This is not acceptable from you

Same here - the entire combo iOS14 and Watch OS7 is a mess (sorry to say). For me it started with upgrading my iPhone 11 Pro to iOS14, after that the Fitness App was broken so I assume it is an iOS problem as my old watch was still on Watch OS 6.x.

  • All my old maps are gone, no workout shows any GPS data anymore
  • New workouts are recorded either with no map at all, or just show a starting pin
  • not all workouts are synced/shown in the Fitness App (the minutes and calories are, strangely enough)

Unfortunately I had to upgrade to iOS14 for the new watch, but honestly it is very disappointing that these bugs persist in the official release, specifically if you look at the focus they have on Fitness (Apps, Watch, etc.).

(problem persisted when switching to the Watch Series 6, so a complete new pairing was done) It does work on the iPhone 8 from my wife to be fair (iOS14, Watch Series 6), no idea what's the difference besides the HW....

I don’t understand why should we go through so much of trouble after buying a supposed to be a world class product from a company like apple wherein apple is unable to upgrade the app or fix the bug. This is very very shameful of apple to ask its customer to go through such pain for such a mediocre reason ...... wish apple reads all our troubles and resolve the issue

Well, I just got of the chat with Apple Support - the only thing I did different was that I backed up my phone on my Mac instead of iCloud. Apparently the de-couple of the watch before making an iPhone backup is important - just to mention it, else you potentially loose your Watch backup stored on the iPhone.

Still they had no idea why my badges were missing and scheduled a tech support phone call. In the meantime I will try to recover my iPhone and Watch backups from my full iMazing backup that I thankfully did yesterday before I started all this which also should include all the health data. Keep fingers crossed...

Ok, got off the phone with Apple support:

First kudos to the support guy and I highly appreciate that he "didn't want to waste my time to jump though the hoops again" (his words, translated) as I already tried the recommended steps.

1) There is no difference between an iCloud backup and a local backup if you encrypt/protect your backup

2) Apple is aware of the issue and they are working on a fix in a coming update

3) If the outlined steps in the support article don't help, it doesn't make much sense to try it again. Waiting for the fix is the best course of action.

So, at least I could recover everything up to yesterday - the annoying part is that the current state will probably screw long time achievement series but at least I didn't loose all of it. So, bring on that fix so that I get my workout maps back!

I had all the same issues (watch 5 ios7 iPhone 11x ios14)

this fixed it today (45min fix)

iPhone Backup to iCloud or itunes

watch reset erase all data

iphone reset erase all data

restore iPhone from backup

pair watch as new

all backup data reserved (past inconsistent data was not fixed)

all issues fixed going forward

Credit to others in this thread for the solution. Thanks

Just spoke to an Apple customer service rep. He said he doesn’t know anything about a bug fix coming soon for these issues, and initially suggested I send my watch in for repairs (and I’d have to wait 7+ business days to receive it back!) I told him someone on this forum said another Apple rep told them that Apple is aware of the issues and creating a fix, and he said I should wait for that instead of sending my watch away. So I guess now it’s just a waiting game to see if Apple acknowledges and fixes these problems for all of us...

I did the full reset with an Apple rep yesterday. But my main problem persists...no matter the workout I choose the time will not continue...it auto pauses over and over. I was so ****** I haven’t even bothered to worry about checking syncing because it’s such a pain to even get a five minute workout in to see what transfers. I have to wear my watch on underside of wrist to get better time tracking. So lame! Good luck!
