WhatsApp Calling not working after iOS14 Update

After update to iOS 14, I have run into 2 big issues:

  1. WhatsApp Calling feature does not work, normal messaging works but the Video / Audio Calling is not working. It keeps asking me to switch from 4G to WIFI but none of them work. Everything was working fine before the update. I have re-installed WhatsApp, re-installed iTunes but still nothing works
  2. Unable to take backup on my laptop after the update. It just hangs and does nothing.. I have left for 5-6 hrs but still does not do a full backup on laptop. Previously it took 20 min at max.

Has anyone faced this issue? I can't roll back to the last saved backup on laptop as I deleted it by mistake. I dont want to pay Apple hence dont use iCloud for backup

Told by WhatsApp support that the only way to resolve was to restore phone. After restore nothing had changed. WhatsApp still did not appear in ‘Privacy’ ‘Local Network’. But I made a call and the pop up box appeared.....’do you grant permission for WhatsApp to access your local network?’ When I agreed, it now appears in ‘Privacy’ ‘Local Network’ and I can now make calls perfectly........so problem resolved.

note: follow Apple’s instructions carefully when doing restore.

Thanks a lot lakitaa . Your solution worked perfectly for me. By lowering the WiFi router security firewall protection setting to Low (previously it was set to High) , I was successfully able to have a smooth WhatsApp Vedeo and Audio calls using WiFi option , successfully tested both incoming as well as outgoing WhatsApp Video/Audio calls (along with 4G LTE mobile data turned on in parallel to WiFi).

I tried all previous suggestions (turn on Setting -> WhatsApp -> on Local network , turn on Settings -> Privacy -> Local network) and both these important solutions did not help.

Interestingly even after updating iOS version to 14.2 (or 14.2.3 ?) , my iPhone did not have any problem, until the home WiFi router was upgraded to a new Nokia ONT (Fiber modem) plus inbuilt WiFi router combination. Thats why I was not fully convinced with the iOS update itself (which earlier suggestions relating to Local Network setting pointed out). So, its quite likely that recent WiFi router updates or WiFi router settings relating to network security such as FireWall level has interfered with the WhatsApp audio/Video calls. Before modifying the firewall security level (to Low), i did a small experiment viz., using another Android phone as a HotSpot and using that WiFi connection in the iPhone . Surprisingly in this combination, iPhone was successfully able to make both incoming and outgoing audio and video calls. This successful experiment gave me the confidence to lower the WiFi router 's security level setting and then could finally conclude and solve the problem. Thanks a bunch . note: This resolution summary (3 or 4 solutions provided so far) needs to be formally sent out to the Apple dev. / support team community and to that of WhatsApp tech support team. Both companies need to have a clear blog / vlog / tech-note explaining this problem and the potential solution(s).

Note: still we need to find out exactly how the iOS upgrade has exposed these inter-dependent intricacies between router/firewall/OS/hotspot settings. Interesting corner case that has been hiding for long term and just got exposed as part of iOS 14.2 upgrade process. It will be nice if the tech-note or blog explains the technical details for software enthusiasts like me.

Best regards and thanks again.

I had the same issue with WhatsApp. None of the below solutions worked for me. What did work, though, was turning my firewall setting down to low (in the router's settings). Immediately I was able to make calls again. It seems that when the firewall is set to medium/high, it blocks WhatsApp calls.

How to set the firewall settings to low:

1) Open the router's configuration page (usually this is http://192.168.0.1/ or http://192.168.1.1/)

2) Enter the username and password (usually username is Admin and Password is Password, yours might differ)

3) Go to the Firewall Protection Menu (will vary from router to router, but isn't difficult to find)

4) Either turn firewall off or set it to low (I recommend low)

PS

Do not delete and re-install your WhatsApp without taking a backup. You will lose all unsaved data.
