iOS 14 sleep wake up alarm sound not working on iPhone

Since updating to iOS 14 on my iPhone XR and watchOS 7 on my Apple Watch Series 3, my Sleep/Wake Up alarm sound (Early Riser) does not work on my iPhone. My watch vibrates to wake me but there is no activity on my iPhone. Prior to the updates, my watch vibrated AND my phone sounded the alarm. I preferred that.

I have made sure that my volume is turned up on Sounds & Haptics under the Sleep app as well as under Settings. Do Not Disturb is set to end at my Wake Up time.

I too was having this Issue and it was driving me insane. I don't like wearing my watch when I sleep. I finally figured out how to turn it off from the watch and let it play through your phone!

Go into the clock app on your iPhone --> alarm/wake and click "change" --> click "edit schedule" --> scroll down and click "options"--> scroll down and click "manage sleep in the Apple Watch app --> scroll down and click "don't use this watch for alarm".

***NOTE: This will not vibrate your watch or play any part of the alarm through your watch! It will only play on your iPhone***

No luck here, even on the latest version.

I unpaired the watch, disabled everything I could think of, and can make it work by itself until.....

....I pair the watch back up, at which point if I'm wearing it while I sleep, the watch alarm will go off instead of the phone, if it's set to the bedtime alarm. It does show the message in the bedtime screen stating that will happen, after pairing the watch back to the phone, so that makes sense.

I have tried it as a "new watch," and from a backup.

This morning I verified that it is still sending a vibration alarm to the watch, as I was already awake when it went off, thanks to Alarmy.

The watch/phone didn't even care that I had been moving both around and was not asleep. It still buzzed the watch silently, and I still would have slept through that most days.

So no luck on the bedroom alarm yet, but thumbs up for Alarmy being free and working as intended. Unfortunately this is a bad fix, as a crash could cause the app to not fire or not be in the background, so it is not a good workaround for something that should really be properly fixed in the operating system itself.

This is the best I have come up with so far, so that you can get sleep tracking, as well as audible/vibration alarms.

You need to do this method manually before sleep, and disable sleep mode when you're done. It doesn't have to be the moment you go to sleep, or anything, just at some point prior, and then again, at some point after.

These instructions will set your watch and phone to Sleep/DnD while sleep is turned on manually, and disengage those when you turn sleep off manually.

The important toggle for this setup is the sleep toggle on your watch, or the sleep toggle on your phone. Setup correctly, they will both toggle together.

Settings:

Colck --> Alarm --> Click the wakeup alarm, and set it up to a typical sleep cycle that you use, but DO NOT enable the wake up alarm toggle. We will not be using that alarm at all. Under sleep schedule, you can activate a schedule if you like, with wind down shortcuts and all, but on the "Options" tab that brings you to a new page, MAKE SURE TURN ON AUTOMATICALLY IS OFF.

Somewhere along the line of these ongoing comments about the Bedtime app, one would think that SOMEBODY at Apple would figure out that many Apple Watch users are all of a sudden unhappy because the Bedtime App stopped working like it did several version updates ago. I wear my watch to bed and what used to happen were 2 things: (1) The watch vibrated at alarm time and (2) The iPhone played the specified melody. Apparently we are in a tunnel where no one from Apple is paying attention.

You should be telling all of this to Apple as they are the only ones who can do anything about it:

Product Feedback - Apple

The fact that Apple has changed it doesn't mean they weren't "paying attention". It could mean that there are people who think this way will work better for the vast majority of watch users. Or, there may be another reason for the change.

It not like we didn’t have enough stress and now they mess with something that worked fine! I do not own an Apple watch or want one. “Bedtime” sleep tracking worked just fine and now it is disabled in IOS 14 to force you to use the Health app “sleep” feature. I hate it.

You can still use the same old alarm features that have existed in the Clock app for years. You do not have to use Health or sleep tracking.

To be clear, under the previous "Bedtime" feature, my watch vibrated AND my phone had an audible alarm. Furthermore, I could turn off the phone audible alarm on my watch so I didn't have to reach for my phone.

Per the OP, my watch vibrates to wake me but my phone alarm no longer sounds under the new "Sleep/Wake Up" feature.

I still have that problem despite trying numerous "fixes." I'll try turning off nightstand feature noted above tonight.

That should be syncing to your watch, so make sure your watch is turned on, unlocked, on your wrist (or whatever keeps it unlocked for now) and not in silent mode.

Adjust all the settings in the app now, and they should stay. Now you can toggle silent on and off using the watch, and you'll see it go back and forth on the phone in realtime.

I don't have a good solution for the real problem here though. I have fully disabled nightstand mode, and disabled everything bed related from the phone/watch, and no longer use any of the built in sleep software to work with the alarms.

It's just not reliable for me to wear the watch to bed anymore. Unfortunately, that's as close to solving the problem as I am willing to mess around with until this either changes or I just stop ever caring about using the watch during sleep. I have now combined the regular (non-sleep setting) alarm, as well as alarmy (which you have to keep in the background if on silent mode).

The watch was never all that great for a sleep device anyways, but now it's just a whole mess.

Oh, and don't forget to make sure you disable the auto-911 dialing if you tried resetting your watch and pairing it again. The last thing you want is to miss your alarm, but wake up to police in your bedroom instead.

This is really an issue, and I can't understand how can Apple deploy a "feature" like this with a) barely any warning and b) no way to choose if you prefer the old way of waking you up.

I missed my first wake up alarm last friday, and now it's a matter of choosing if you prefer not to wear your watch to sleep or keep the sound on your watch on. Because there's no other way to get wake up sounds from your phone + watch combo. It's just nuts.

I'm writing to see if with enough replies the issue gets noticed and fixed ASAP.

I’m been having the exact same issues as all of you & I updated my iOS as soon as possible as I was so excited for a sleep feature built into the watch but wow do I regret it! It’s only been problem after problem. After many attempts I finally managed to back up & restore iPhone as advised from another thread which has fixed the issue of my sounds & haptics volume muting itself but to my dismay I still slept in this morning, and from reading your responses I finally understand that it’s not a glitch it’s intentional setting by Apple that we cannot control!!!! I’m so frustrated. Does anybody know if there is a way to roll back to iOS 13?? I miss my old alarm ringing on my phone & vibrating on my watch I can’t deal with this.

If you ask me, this is less of a bug and more a design function that Apple need to amend.

I too experienced both my iPhone and watch alarms going off which was perfect, now only my watch alarm works when wearing it overnight which if on silent (as I normally have my watch and phone) only vibrates, which isn’t enough to wake me.

My preference would be for the watch to vibrate (if on silent), and my phone alarm to go off as usual - however judging by the description in the ‘Alarm’ app, it does seem like it’s designed this way.

Let’s just hope they change it in an upcoming update

Grrr....Same thing is happening to me! I’ve tried going to the watch setting and turning off mirror my iPhone of alarms and alerts. It works for a few days and then goes back to vibrating on the watch. I’m not even wearing my watch!! It’s sitting on my nightstand in nightstand mode so I can see time during the night if I need to. I don’t want my watch sitting on my bedside table to be my alarm Apple. Why? Please fix this. 🙏🏻

Oct 21, 2020 6:58 AM in response to MSROhio

I’m starting to get used to waking up from the watch only but I don’t like it. Anything that is critical wake up time I set a secondary alarm on the phone (which is loud and obnoxiously scary to wake up to 😡).

one thing that helped me to wake up to the watch was setting the volume of the alarm to max, and also every night making sure my watch isn’t on silent mode.

still wish we could choose the phone for alarm sounds with sleep tracking though. This is crap the way it is.

Oct 27, 2020 12:28 PM in response to slashedbeauty

Agreed. I still have the problem. When in Sleep/Wake Up mode, only my watch vibrates to wake me. My phone sounds no alarm. I wear my watch to bed as I want to track my sleep and I like the feature of the watch face being dark throughout the Do Not Disturb period.

In other words, iOS 14.1 did not provide me the option of my watch vibrating AND my phone alarm sounding when I have the watch tracking my sleep. THAT is the option most posters are requesting that does not appear to be provided in the iOS update.
