iOS 14 sleep wake up alarm sound not working on iPhone

Since updating to iOS 14 on my iPhone XR and watchOS 7 on my Apple Watch Series 3, my Sleep/Wake Up alarm sound (Early Riser) does not work on my iPhone. My watch vibrates to wake me but there is no activity on my iPhone. Prior to the updates, my watch vibrated AND my phone sounded the alarm. I preferred that.

I have made sure that my volume is turned up on Sounds & Haptics under the Sleep app as well as under Settings. Do Not Disturb is set to end at my Wake Up time.

I too was having this Issue and it was driving me insane. I don't like wearing my watch when I sleep. I finally figured out how to turn it off from the watch and let it play through your phone!

Go into the clock app on your iPhone --> alarm/wake and click "change" --> click "edit schedule" --> scroll down and click "options"--> scroll down and click "manage sleep in the Apple Watch app --> scroll down and click "don't use this watch for alarm".

***NOTE: This will not vibrate your watch or play any part of the alarm through your watch! It will only play on your iPhone***

After the iOS 14.1 update I had a similar experience, but I am pretty sure it was the iPhone that was ringing and it did not appear to have started ringing until the expiration of the 1st snooze period - I have no recollection of ever waking up until the alarm rang; do not believe I ever pressed on "snooze". I usually sleep with my watch on but that particular night I did not. I have not observed any major changes with the iOS 14.2 update. The phone does not ring with the sound turned off, which it did prior to the initial iOS 14 update. I wish Apple would return to pre-iOS 14 logic for the Bedtime app. It is not user-friendly now.

Somewhere along the line of these ongoing comments about the Bedtime app, one would think that SOMEBODY at Apple would figure out that many Apple Watch users are all of a sudden unhappy because the Bedtime App stopped working like it did several version updates ago. I wear my watch to bed and what used to happen were 2 things: (1) The watch vibrated at alarm time and (2) The iPhone played the specified melody. Apparently we are in a tunnel where no one from Apple is paying attention.

Is it that ‘most people’ aren’t having the problem or ‘most people’ don’t use this feature. Probably doesn’t change the response by Apple either way, but wanted to clarify.

I suspect that a large percentage of people who have iPhones and Watches use them as alarms. The new sleep tracking feature has led to some confusion for people over what is supposed to sound and when. So, that's some of the issue. And then there are some people who are having problems even within that context.

Feedback through the correct channel is important because that's how Apple tracks this sort of problem. When they see enough to begin to see a pattern, the sometimes even reach out to people who have posted in the forums.

Hi nawajaca,

Yes.

I think there's a new problem, or one I haven't been able to locate before.

Something is trying to allow the alarm to disarm if it thinks you're awake. It did it to me today, although I was awake to catch it. I got a popup today that the phone saying that it thinks I'm awake, and I have no idea why it did that as it has not done so in the past (that I recall anyways).

I had not experienced this until the latest iOS release, or at least I had not been able to be awake to catch it in action.

Let us know if you track down the reason.

I'll spend some time in the next few days trying to replicate it as well.
