Orange dot won't turn off on iPhone

Ever since updating my iPhone XR to IOS 14.0.1 the little orange dot signifying that my microphone is on, won’t go off. I’ve tried closing out of all apps, shutting down the phone, turning off the ability to use microphone in all apps but the orange light persists. My next step is to reset the phone but I would rather not do that if I can help it.

I do know. For most of the people who have posted about this and they say they aren't running any apps they come back with they are on the phone. Which is an app and it uses the microphone. And if you open Control Center while the light is showing it will tell you which app is using the the microphone. How is this not knowing?

As I said, don’t use any app that uses the microphone. The orange dot merely means that the microphone is on. It has no other purpose than to tell you when the microphone is on.

That will be quite limiting, of course; you will have an iPhone that can’t make phone calls. But if not showing the orange dot is that important to you, then not making phone calls is a small price to pay for not seeing the orange dot.

The dot should not be always present. It should only be present when you are using the microphone, such as when you are on a call. NOWHERE in Apple’s documentation does it say its purpose is to "alert me [you] if the microphone is being accessed without my[your] knowledge.” It just says that it is to alert you that the microphone is on. It would have to be a mind reader to know whether you knew it was on or not. And that is not currently a capability of Siri.

So how you solve this problem ?

That’s Easy! NEVER use the microphone on your iPhone. Never make phone calls, never use transcription features, don’t Zoom, don’t WhatsApp, don’t FaceTime, don’t Skype, etc

The orange dot means that the microphone is on; that’s ALL it means, so if you never want to see the orange dot don’t use any function that requires a microphone. Simple solution!

Lawrence,

I felt the need to spell out what you dont seem to be listening....

-There is a yellow dot at the top right

-Opening the control centre is NOT displaying any information regarding an app

-All microphone access is turned off, NO we are not on a call or using an app.

the orange dot is appearing without any consent given to any apps, which is concerning.

My orange dot does not have a microphone in it and it’s more to the right of my screen. I thought maybe it was the camera but when I went to post this comment the app used Face ID and no dot appeared on my phone. So just to be clear, no dot is needed for Face ID and from what I read the microphone is for recording purposes only like with Siri or voice memos. So how am I giving anything permission to record me?

Good grief. After spending all that money on a phone, the least you could do is read the manual, or at least some of the replies in this thread. Shame on you.

but it’s not true though

Actually, it is very easy to turn off the little orange dot. Simply never ever use any app on the iPhone that uses the microphone. This would include: no phone calls, no Siri, no voice memos, no FaceTime, no WhatsApp chat, etc.
