Orange dot won't turn off on iPhone

Dude stop trolling. She’s saying she’s not using anything and the dots still there. So stop.

to the person who made the question, I’m in the same boat. I’d also like to figure that out bc of the light is on then it SHOULD say what is using it. So to see nothing but see the indicator that says something is using it is somewhat unsettling even if it’s not “malicious” bc it shows something is at least hiding & I don’t like that especially if I can discern what that is that is hiding & listening/using my mic 👀

I feel like Apple is becoming very instructive. All these features your implanting with no ability to disable them. Wifi is well. It just randomly turns it self on and the bluetooth. Im starting to grow weary about them. they just had a chinese keyboard on our phones last year. just weird

Well, that is ridiculously easy to accomplish: simply do not use anything that makes use of the microphone. While this action would severely limit the capabilities of a device used for talking to people, at least the orange dot would be gone.

By all means smash your phone and get a Galaxy! It has the huge advantage that when there is spyware on it you will have no way of knowing. And no one here in this user to user forum cares how you waste your money.

btw, it says “unknown” because another app ran after the one that used the mic. But you probably know which app it was because you used it for a phone call, WhatsApp, telegram, FaceTime or similar.

That is so unlikely I’d say it was impossible. Are you sure the dot isn’t on your wallpaper? If you see the dot when making a phone call that is essential, because you can’t make a call without the microphone being on.

Yes IK... but it comes on when using for just about anything. And I guess my concern is it just started happening g.. was never there when I first got my phone so I bought into the fact that it’s unwanted listening /spying? Without my permission. But it sounds like you’re saying it has to come on when making a phone call... which would make sense if it didn’t come on in other situations? It’s all good... I appreciate everyone’s input! Ty!

The orange dot came with iOS14 so no-one had it before then. It’s just a light to tell you that the mic is on. The mic was always on before when it needed to be. The only new thing that’s happened is that there’s now an orange dot to tell you that the mic is in use.

So you aren't actually getting an orange dot? Are you getting a green dot? That would be the camera and if you used it before you let the iPhone go to sleep it may be lit up briefly and then will be gone.

As I said, don’t use any app that uses the microphone. The orange dot merely means that the microphone is on. It has no other purpose than to tell you when the microphone is on.

That will be quite limiting, of course; you will have an iPhone that can’t make phone calls. But if not showing the orange dot is that important to you, then not making phone calls is a small price to pay for not seeing the orange dot.

That appears to be the case, but since that equates to the dot always being present, it defeats the purpose of the feature, which was supposed to alert me if the microphone is being accessed without my knowledge.

The dot should not be always present. It should only be present when you are using the microphone, such as when you are on a call. NOWHERE in Apple’s documentation does it say its purpose is to "alert me [you] if the microphone is being accessed without my[your] knowledge.” It just says that it is to alert you that the microphone is on. It would have to be a mind reader to know whether you knew it was on or not. And that is not currently a capability of Siri.

That’s Easy! NEVER use the microphone on your iPhone. Never make phone calls, never use transcription features, don’t Zoom, don’t WhatsApp, don’t FaceTime, don’t Skype, etc

The orange dot means that the microphone is on; that’s ALL it means, so if you never want to see the orange dot don’t use any function that requires a microphone. Simple solution!
