Apple CarPlay disconnecting in 2020 Acura RDX

Apple CarPlay disconnecting in 2020 Acura RDX with iOS 14.0.1. This problem started when I updated the iOS to 14.0.1.

Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?

It happens every few minutes and then, after a few minutes, it reconnects.

The car’s software is up to date.

Try calling Acura in-car tech support:

1 (888) 528-7876

That worked fir me. They recommended the factory reset, which didn’t work at first, but did when I did it a second time. I deleted the phone from the Acura system before I did the second factory reset. It’s been working on properly for a couple weeks. Fingers crossed.

Well, I happened to spend almost an hour in our 2020 RDX with the upgrade tonight. I've got good news and bad news...

The good news

I didn't experience a single disconnection of CarPlay, which was happening pretty reliably every 5-10 minutes before the update. So, it looks like Acrua may have solved the CarPlay disconnection problems for the 2020 RDX.

The bad news

I'm experiencing a new bug that I never saw before and began immediately after installing the Acura RDX update: the radio sound stops unexpectedly when I open Waze.

  1. I plug in my iPhone 12 Pro while XM is playing on the radio (initially using iOS 14.3, now iOS 14.4 with the same issue).
  2. I open Waze and the sound stops (I can no longer hear XM radio).
  3. Navigating to XM and changing channels doesn't bring back the audio.
  4. Navigating to FM restores audio to the speakers and navigating back to XM gets me back to XM with Waze running.

I've learned to use the heads up display to get around the new bug (Apps button on steering wheel and use left wheel to select FM and then re-select XM radio). Given this behavior started immediately after installing the Acura update and has been 100% consistent, I'm convinced it's a new bug introduced along with the update that fixed the disconnection problem.

To help anyone that hasn’t been able to get a software fix for this...

I picked up a USB voltage tester on Amazon for $8 and hooked it up in-line with my phone to the USB. Whenever the phone disconnected, the voltage would drop to 0.0v. This was the overload circuit kicking in due to a short in the 5F module in my Audi!

Not saying this is 100% the case for everyone, but if there’s no setting or update that fixes the issue, it could very well be a hardware issue that’s covered under warranty with your car.

I went to the Acura dealership on Friday regarding the Apple CarPlay issue. The staff member stated that he did not know what I was talking about. Luckily we had the opportunity to drive around and he was able to witness it happen.

He ordered a new connection part and will have me stop by next week for installation. I don’t think that will resolve the issue considering the phone is changed the entire time when plugged in. Sigh****

Your hunch is correct unfortunately. My dealer installed a new "USB" cord, (requiring 4 hours and a loaner) to fix the problem. As I drove home from the dealer it happened again within 10 minutes of driving away. I have not done it yet because I am simply not driving much at all but my plan is to do what a few people have said which is remove my phone from the system and then do two factory resets. It seems a few of the people who did that have not posted again that they have continued to have problems. Although some others have. Worth a shot. Good luck!

I recently did the factory reset in the infotainment system and it fixed the problem.

You said earlier it only fixed the problem temporarily. We've heard from other folks in this thread that a factory reset doesn't work or only provides a temporary fix. How often are we supposed to factory reset the infotainment system? And wouldn't you lose all your settings (address book, XM presets, etc.) each time?

If there's any bright spot to winter & a pandemic, it's that we're driving far less than usual, which means there's fewer opportunities to be irritated by Acura's incessantly disconnecting CarPlay experience in our 2020 RDX. It's hard to believe Acura dealers aren't experiencing this. Are all Acura dealers and mechanics Android users? Or do they all drive BMWs? ;-)
