Apple Pencil Glitching

My pencil keeps glitching on Notability - drawing random lines and dots, like an electronic fountain pen spill. And it breaks up my writing.

I have the 2020 iPad 12.9 inch, and 2nd gen Apple Pencil

I've tried the following things:

  • getting a new Apple Pencil
  • restarting the iPad
  • reconnecting the Pencil
  • turning off other devices nearby (to try stop interference)
  • holding the metal side of the iPad while writing, to see if it was a grounding issue and also removing the case while writing
  • taking the iPad out the charger while writing

I've noticed it glitches mainly on Notability, however I don't use the other apps enough to be able to tell if its a Notability issue or a general one...

Very annoying! Anyone got any ideas? Side note, the iPad gets kind of warm with Notability - anyone else get this?

Thanks for the help!

I may have a suggestion:

If you are using a case and screen protector, try exposing some of the metal on the side of the iPad and keeping a finger on it while you write with the other hand. Perhaps when you are writing you are generating some static electricity that is interfering with the pencil and iPad.

Please post a reply if this works for you. If it does, maybe someone from apple support could chime in on an actual fix?

Hope this helps!

It feels like a software issue with IOS, I’ve had the same issues, I did all the same steps dd271, unplugging it seemed to work but the issue happens even when unplugged.

I just got apple to send me a replacement iPad to see if the hardware on the pad itself might be problematic (waiting for it to arrive). I’m seeing a lot of people complaining about this after the latest os update, though people have also been complaining since 2016 in some posts, so idk...

GoodNotes has done a solid job of grabbing all the different complaints about this issue and sticking them all on one page: https://support.goodnotes.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001872735-I-get-unexpected-random-lines-appearing-while-writing-with-Apple-Pencil-

Finally issue resolved

this can happen due to a number of reasons like
1) dropping apple pencil
2)screen protector/paperlike
3) overly tight ipad case

But all this can build "static charge" on the ipad screen , so I here is what you need to do
Remove ipad case
Remove paper like/screen protector

Now try to use your ipad on a wooden table
You'll not experience that issue again

And if you intend to use it anywhere apart from the wooden table just place your index finger on your ipad sceen on the bezel and your thumb on the side metal

This will make sure that you'll not experience static charge on the ipad screen and there your pencil will work absolutely fine.

I have been using iPads in cases with no issues with the Apple Pencil or other third party, smart Bluetooth stylii.

As I have continually stated, a drawing/writing glove has mostly solved this issue for me.

The drawing gloves completely isolates the side of your hand/palm of your hand eliminating ANY body electrical impulse contact with the iPad screen.

This has worked for me for many years.

So I was having an Apple Pencil glitch like the other on here, and specifically while using the notability app as well. I have also tried all the other methods and nothing worked. But after chatting with the Amazon support member (yes I know, odd lol) he told me to make sure the pencil tip was tightened all the way, meaning if the tip wasn’t twisted all the way then do so. And that was the issue I was having. My pencil has been working great since. Please try keeping hour pencil tip twisting that can cause the pencil to glitch. Hope this helps!

No digital, smart, Bluetooth stylus is perfect and neither is Apple's Pencil stylus.

All digital, smart Bluetooth stylii have some issues with screen palm rejection.

Even Apple's Pencil exhibits issues more frequently than not.

I will keep stating this until some or all of you try this.

Try using a special, lycra®-based material, body/hand electrical impulse isolating drawing/writing glove.

Something like this found on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/Professional-Anti-fouling-Drawing-Tablet-Graphic-Right-Ha nd-Left-Hand/dp/B017R8M2JY/ref=sr_1https://www.amazon.com/Professional-Anti-fouling-Drawing-Tablet-Graphic-Right-Ha

Many more makers of these types of gloves found on Amazon and in different hand sizes and limited colors, as well!

They will also work for either right or left handed users.

I have been using tablet drawing/writing gloves for years. They are inexpensive and they work and almost eliminate all palm rejection and stray mark issues.

An additional plus of a drawing/writing glove as it makes it easier for your hand/side of your hand to more easily glide across the iPad's screen as your hand/palm/side of your hand won't stick to the iPad's glass screen or leave skin oil marks while using ANY stylus.

I wish some of with this issue would just simply purchase one of these drawing/writing gloves and try it with your Apple Pencil.

Good Luck to All!

No.

This is simply NOT true.

The gloves are made of a material that isolates the electrical impulses of your body/hand/skin from activating things on touch sensisitive screens.

As I keep repeatedly stating, I have been using such gloves on my iPads for many years now.

They do minimise palm rejection issues.

They are cheap!

Purchase one and try it!

I only posted that particular link as an example of what to purchase and what they look like.

It was maybe a bad/atypical example, but I clearly stated Many more makers of these types of drawing/writng gloves.

Here is another drawing glove maker that states its glove has palm rejection feature.

Just look for such gloves that state good for touch screens and has palm rejection.

I completely agree with Kavanavak. This issue has only surfaced in the last year or so and it seems to be getting worse as time goes on. Does MichaelPM expect us to carry a glove around to every meeting / approach we make towards our iPad’s or wear it throughout the day ? Ha and No. With Apples billions in cash reserve they should commit a chunk to correcting this PROBLEM.

Why not take a drawing/writing glove with you?

It fits easily in any type of clothes pocket!

These gloves are designed to be thin and easy to take with you and use anywhere.

Whenever I take my iPad anywhere for any length of time. I have to put my iPad in a bag, along with cables, external drives and power supplies ( Apple's or a portable power battery bank )!

Why not have a drawing/writing glove with you?

I have many of these type of gloves stored up over the years ( in case I lose one, which has happened ).

The Apple Pencil is NOT perfect and neither are anyone's products!

I offered everyone here a solution that I have used for MANY years with my own Apple Pencil and other smart stylii with my own 5-year old iPad Pro.

The drawing/writing glove has been working well for me for many years and have had virtually NO smart stylus/Apple Pencil drawing/writing/palm rejection issues since using one of these.

Everyone tells about cases where it worsens and where it is solved. I tried all of them. Plugging increases the touch screen inaccuracies, but the pencil issue is a bit different. It happens when unplugged, too (bad news). It happens more during active wi-fi streaming, but it sometimes happens without it, too (bad news). It just starts randomly. No, carrying an insulating (unsure about his) glove is very inconvenient. No, stiffing the pin of pencil does not solve the issue. Pencil replacements don’t solve either. No, cases, screen protectors or iPad covers do not change the situation.

I strongly believe that this is a digitizer synchronization issue. The screen trace and Bluetooth sync gets disturbed for some reason. This happens more when plugged and when wi-fi / Bluetooth are all active, probably interfering one another. And it is independent from the app, may it be one note, notability, etc, because they all rely on the same “buggy” system input. Only apple can solve the issue - if they can, if they want to. I feel that they do not listen to complains, here...

If what you suspect is possible, then why does this start out of nowhere and is only happening across a small percentage and varying cross-section of Apple Pencil compatible devices?

Like all of the posts of touch screen issue with 2017/2018 iPad Pro models back in 2019/2020, the reason and cause for this particular Apple Pencil issues appear to be elusive and seemingly is not a broad enough device issue for Apple to be able to properly diagnose and to root out a cause.

There are not too many posts covering this particular Apple Pencil issue.

Hi, I was in this thread pretty early on & my device (iPad Pro 2020 12.9 inch) suffers from this issue. I also happen to own one of the Lycra gloves you speak of, it makes no difference. In fact it makes it worse (see below).

This isn’t the palm rejection glitch, I can assure you of this.

Earlier in the thread, myself and someone else spoke of how this seems to be an issue of static electricity. If I touch my finger to the metal casing of the iPad whilst the issue is happening, the issue stops. Wearing the Lycra glove prevents your hand from touching the metal casing at all, and so worsens this issue.

the iPad Pro 12.9 is perhaps more perceptible to this issue since it is much larger and so it’s possible to write with your hand not touching the metal casing.

I’m reasonably certain this is a hardware issue with the iPad screen not grounding itself correctly to dissipate the static build up on the screen.

The gloves I own work very well with my iPad Pro.

I use them with lots of Apple Pencil/third party, smart Bluetooth stylus apps.

I purchased quite a few gloves over the past 3 years, or so.

I had about 8-10 of these. I am down to six now.

They were $12-$15 dollars each during the times I purchased these.

I have had NO issues with the drawing gloves and have virtually no issues with palm rejection with any app!

I purchased gloves the stated specifically for touch screen devices and mentioned palm rejection properties.

I found 10 makers of the proper gloves on Amazon, which I have identified on Amazon and saved links to.

The maker I purchased from seems to not appear on Amazon, any longer, so I have not purchased any more gloves to date until I need them.

They CAN be easily misplaced/forgotten if you do not pocket them after use.

The ones I use DO, in fact work!

Maybe you purchased the wrong glove/s.

I have since changed my Amazon links to show gloves that do mention works with touch screen tablets and do mention screen palm rejection.

Jan 25, 2021 8:17 AM in response to MichelPM

Sir this is not about gloves, or your iPad - which clearly doesn’t have this issue?!

I can write on my iPad without my hand touching it, and the issue still persists - I can even turn palm rejection off and it still happens.

It’s a hardware issue with the iPad (why would it stop happening when I touch the metal casing of the iPad otherwise?)

I don’t think the 2020 iPads even suffer from palm rejection bugs - the posts I’ve seen of that are all 2018 or earlier devices.

You’re offering band aids to amputees at this point.
