Apple Pencil Glitching

My pencil keeps glitching on Notability - drawing random lines and dots, like an electronic fountain pen spill. And it breaks up my writing.

I have the 2020 iPad 12.9 inch, and 2nd gen Apple Pencil

I've tried the following things:

  • getting a new Apple Pencil
  • restarting the iPad
  • reconnecting the Pencil
  • turning off other devices nearby (to try stop interference)
  • holding the metal side of the iPad while writing, to see if it was a grounding issue and also removing the case while writing
  • taking the iPad out the charger while writing

I've noticed it glitches mainly on Notability, however I don't use the other apps enough to be able to tell if its a Notability issue or a general one...

Very annoying! Anyone got any ideas? Side note, the iPad gets kind of warm with Notability - anyone else get this?

Thanks for the help!

I’ve spoken with apple technical support, they’re aware of the issue, though they didn’t have a ‘fix’ I was told to disable the pencil ‘click’ (to change from pen to eraser) and I haven’t had the issue since, it’s been two weeks now and I was having the issue almost every day before that change and did basically everything else possible before that weird solution. I haven’t turned the pencil click back on to check if it comes back out of fear of it not going away again ;) ;)

Hi

Thanks for the quick response! I'm glad to hear that you've had no issues with the new device. Did you have apple care or was it just replaced under warrenty?

I'm not using any case, and there's nothing under the iPad that's magnetic. I've also used a friends apple pencil and the issue persisted (I've tried new pencil tips too!)

I'll raise it with apple support and see what they say. Thank you for the help!

Hey,

yeah same I use it for uni and that sounds exactly like what was happening to mine. Definitely take a video of it happening, as it’s harder to prove it through a screenshot

and yeah holding my hand against it worked for a bit too, but definitely worth replacing as it’s a bit ridiculous to have to do that every time!

good luck with the iPad and uni :)

After years of using various smart stylii, like the Apple Pencil and other third party smart stylii, I have found that none are perfect for palm rejection.

If you want to try and eliminate the. palm rejection issues, altogether, the best way you can fix this is that you need to purchase and use a special third party, lycra®material-based, non-body electrical conducting drawing glove to use.

These can be easily found on amazon.com in various sizes and colors.

This is what I use everyday to ensure/insure no app makes any stay marks using ANY ”smart” Bluetooth stylus, even when using the Apple Pencil.

Best of Luck to You!
