Getting 2nd monitor to work for iMac 27" 2013 model?

I know for sure a 2nd monitor should work with an iMac 27" 2013 model because I have seen it with my very own eyes on a half dozen of youtube videos. But for the life of me, I can't get it to work with my iMac 27" 2013 model running macOS 10.15.7 (Catalina). I asked for help and some posts are as helpful as a door knob. Excuse my French. I have already tried different mini-display to hdmi adaptors and cables and still it doesn't work. I tried the nvram reset, smc reset, safe mode reboot and still no luck.

Then I did some googling in this forum and I stumple across to alot of users who didn't have any issue getting their 2nd monitor to work in their older macOS but once they upgraded to Catalina, they had issue. So my last resort is to revert my iMac 27" 2013 back to the original OS that came with which is Maverick (10.9). So I just want to know if anyone who had issue with their 2nd monitor here tried downloading their Mac OS to their original OS and then got their 2nd monitor to work again or it is already too late because once you upgrade to Catalina, some how Catalina messed up the firmware and you can't revert back even after downgrading your mac OS? I just want save myself headache and time if this doesn't work.

Or if anyone here who got their iMac 27" 2013 to work with a 2nd monitor. Can you please provide the following details:

  1. What mac OS are you currently running?
  2. What mini-display to hdmi adaptor are you using (brand or specific link where to buy this)?
  3. If not any type of adaptor, are you using some sort of cables? If cables, what sort of cable (brand or specific link where to buy it?

Thanks in advance.

well i downgraded my mac os to maverick today and when i went into system information and click on thunderbolt. it still said "No hardware was found." so my guess is it is an hardware failure on my thunderbolt ports. my 2nd solution now is instead of taking it to apple store to repair which probably would cost as much as a new imac, i'm going to use screen sharing app with my older imac to use it as a 2nd screen.

I have an ASUS K272HUL 27 inch display connected to my 27 Inch Late-2013 iMac via DisplayPort cable. Although the ASUS is plugged into power, it is powered off until I choose to use it.

Only when the ASUS display is powered on will I observe the Arrangement tab in the Displays panel. I use the following configuration so I can pass the mouse off the right-side of the iMac onto the adjoining ASUS display. This is useful for VirtualBox guests configured to use the secondary display.

It’s fairly uncommon for those port to completely die, because I’m pretty sure that they are protected by internal overloads like the USB ports. I would try resetting the SMC again, only this time leave it disconnected from the power for 5 or 10 minutes.

Sorry but I have no idea if using USB in bootcamp will work or not. Mostly because I have never, nor ever plan on installing windows on any of my Mac’s.

SMC reset didn't work after 10 minutes of disconnecting the power. Since I don't want to take it to apple repair.

It was worth trying, NO?

I'm only left with 2 options: try another monitor and downgrade my mac os to the original maverick. you mention downgrading mac os won't work. why do you believe that after i show you a thread about ppl upgrading to catalina and all of a sudden their 2n monitor doesn't work anymore? how do you explain that? i have 2 ssd on my imac. one is a 120 GB and the other one is a 1 TB. Both are running catalina. i'm currently using the 1 TB as my main to boot up. maybe i can downgrade using the one that has 120 GB back to maverick and see if that would work? if that doesn't work, i can go back using my 1 TB sdd? what do you think?

You can try an HDMI TV with a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, but that connection is generally more finicky than the DisplayPort or DVI monitor connections.

Because I've been running dual monitors on my Mac's for many many years and none of the macOS versions, have ever disabled or stopped an external monitor from working.

is there a diagnostic somewhere i can run to test if my thunderbolt ports are working properly or not?

i'm running the diagnostic later tonight by holding down the d button while rebooting. do you think this will help anything or a waste of time?

Yes it could very well return a hardware problem.

i'm returning the staples cable and ordering one more cable just to see if it is really the cable or not. the one i'm ordering is from amazon and it does said thunderbolt compatible:

Yes Cables Matters makes good cables.

well my imac 21.5" works fine with my imac 27" using screen share. but still not what i wanted which is to act as an "extended" monitor.

i have another ideas. since my hp monitor has an hdmi input. can i get a chromecast and use it with a software call airparrort 3 which can extend to another monitor.

anyone here have experience with chromecast on a hp monitor or using airparrot 3 here?

woodmeister50: your answer looks promising. my monitor has a vga, hdmi and display port input. i have already use a vga to mini display port cable. That didn't work. I also use a generic mini display to display port adaptor from HD and that didn't work. Do you know where I can get a good quality of mini displayport to displayport adator on the web? Do you recommend a minidisplay port to display port cable instead?
