'hpPostProcessing.bundle' malware?

Today I was working on my MacBook Pro and I wanted to print a document on an HP printer. When I pressed the 'print' button, Gatekeeper told me the following proces/application is malware and does harm to my Mac: 'hpPostProcessing.bundle'.

Normally I never have this issue when I want to print anything on the printer that I used today. Could anyone tell me if I need to assume that this process/application is really malware, or that I can assume that it is a 'false positive'?

Thanks in advance.

You did Not have to go buy a different printer. Almost none of the others who have posted on the now 6 pages of posts here had to do that.

---------

If you don't see it in Software Update, Apple now has it posted as a separate, manual download.

HP Driver update 5.1

https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US

--------

what you will need to do:

delete your old Printer Queue,

restart your Mac,

download new Drivers,

Add-A printer to get your full original functions back.

You should not have to fall back to generic postscript driver or AirPrint driver, but those remain as work-arounds.

There are links posted above for two sets of Drivers.

• For "dumb" inkjet printers, use the link that starts with ftp:

• For smarter printers and laserjets, use the link for Drivers version 5.1

In either case, you must delete you old print queue and AFTER download re-add a new Print queue, which will then incorporate the new drivers.

Another fix we have recently found is to delete the HP folder located in users library-printers, empty the trash bin and then restart the machine. After restarting the machine in printer & scanners delete the HP printer and reinstall using IP using the HP Jetdirect - Socket protocol. You will then be promoted if you would like to download the driver from apple. Once downloaded, the correct driver will be auto selected and you are able to print. I have done this on 3 Macs now running 10.15.7.

I had the urgent need to scan and print within two hours this morning. I spent one hour downloading & installing the new HP drivers. The scanner still would not work. Traipsing to the computer shop & getting a new scanner/printer was the only practical solution within the time available.

I expect my IT to work when I need it, how I need it. This was yet another unwelcome surprise from apple. I will probably get deleted from the forums if I say that I also had to buy a cheap PC to get around the problem in the time available.

Now I have "spare" hours this evening I might be able to have the time to get my mac working

The first couple of times around, I tried running HP UN-Installer, but it didn't work. The icon bounced around on the dock, but nothing else happened.

I just tried it again, and it worked. Shrug.

I think it's one of those magic things that happens when I ask for help. The computer gods out there straighten things out, when it's not just me they are messing with.

Thank you for the help, Grant.

Appreciate your expertise and sharing.

Have a terrific 2021

HP appears to have taken a major step BACK away from supporting their older "dumb" printers (that do imaging on the computer instead of imaging in the printer), especially the mess they sent into the marketplace with special drivers for only one model. Faced with updating a lot of different software to run with Big Sur, they instead asked Apple to de-authorize all their old drivers.

Their network-capable "smart" printers (with PCL or Postscript support) work fine with updated drivers.
