iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

I’m at a car show. Outdoor. 87F. Phone in my pocket and taking one pic every 2 mins.

within 20 mins my phone has gone into protection mode and dimmed at exactly 50%. I can’t see a darn thing.

I have Apple sending me a new phone and I send this one back. I have little hope given that the other 2 iPhone 12 in the family do exact same thing.

this phone is unusable outdoors!!!!

Just to chime in: it is not only the iPhone 12. I have an iPhone 10 which was perfectly fine (battery life, temperature wise, Face ID wise) as long as it run on iOS13.7. The moment it auto upgraded to iOS 14 the problem started. Thats like 6(?) month ago. Overheating, Face ID giving message that it will work only once the phone has cooled down, battery drains within 4hrs in standby mode not even used. You can search for the iPhone10 threats in here and you will see similar problems.

Hey everyone,

Been noticing the same overheating issue those past few weeks with my iPhone 12 Pro. It works like this on my end : all of a sudden when doing light things : tweeting, doing web browsing or messaging, there would be a sudden spike of temperature that makes the phone hard to handle with bare hands (and no cover). No specific app seems to trigger that warming up. If I don't do anything, I observe that the phone remains ultra hot. If I shut down the phone, restart it a minute later boom issue is solved. Today the phone -with cover- on a stormy day with 18°C, the phone was in my pocket when doing the dishes. When done I took the phone out and it was ultra hot. Had to power cycle. I'm running iOS 14.6 with battery reported at 96% capacity and I'm using only 4G or WiFi.

Something is going on here. Would love to have feedback from Apple !

Followup from my earlier posts... I had the 12 Pro replaced, but the new device still overheated, so I downgraded to an 11 Pro for a trip to Egypt. Daily temps were 100-111. I took lots of pictures in intense sun. My phone did feel hot, but it never "overheated" with the warning sign. I did put it in my purse and let it rest next to a water bottle when not in use. Some on our trip did have overheating issues, some from models as early as iPhone 10, but I was so relieved I was able to use my iPhone on this trip. No doubt the 12 Pro I previously owned that overheated and shut down when I went outside would not have been useful on this trip, but the 11 Pro seemed to do OK.

Many of us bought this series for the good camera (I did). — only to find out you can’t take pictures outside in the sun without it overheating and shutting down. I downgraded to an 11Pro before a trip a couple of weeks ago, and also bought a Sony camera to use in the event the 11 overheated. The new phone and Sony camera far exceeded the cost of my RT flight to Egypt.

I have had the same issue. The store swapped everything apart from the camera and screen. Then the following time replaced the handset and I’m still having the same issue with a new handset. They aren’t fit for purpose above 30 degrees in temperature it seems. I can’t get a full charge on my phone between 12-7pm in Summer as it won’t charge. They should recall them.

I had exactly the same problem. Came here looking for answers. Went to my settings. Alert tells me I haven’t finished setting up. I bypassed the Apple Pay. Didn’t figure I’d use it, so I blew it off. But because I’m sick and tired of my phone scorching my hand, thought I’d give it a try. I am not kidding when I say that the second I hit the “continue” button, my phone instantly started cooling off. I can text this comfortably now without wanting to grab an oven mitt to hold my flippin phone. Insane? Yes. True? Also yes. I hope this helps others out there that have suffered hot hand for far too long.

My new iPhone 12 bought on 07-12-2021 has been overheating randomly even when I’m not running any apps. Just called Apple support today 8/14/21 and the best options I was provided was to either take it an Apple store for the support staff to look at it or if I do not want to go into a physical store, reset the device with new software-basically wipe and reset from default settings. I was expecting a solid definite answer as to why the device is getting hot randomly when I’m not running any apps but it looks like even Apple support do not know why it is getting hot. I’m on iOS 14.7.1.

is anyone else experiencing this?

i cannot go into a store due to health reasons I do not want to get into here. Thank you.

This is an ongoing issue with my iphone 12 Pro. Cannot properly edit photos due to dark screen on apps and constantly goes very dark screen even in cool climates with no apps open or general use. All camera functions cause the screen to darken at some point and usually pretty quickly. Apple swapped out the entire inside of the phone and I have loaded as new and from backup, neither option fixes the issue. Hopefully this is resolved ASAP for $1100 this should be addressed

Your comments reflect what everyone on this forum is saying. The issues with the 12 Pro do not seem to be "fixable" and in many (unexpected) situations, the phone is not usable. Most of us have been to Apple, had repairs and replacements, but the issues remain. I downgraded to the 11Pro so I would have a workable camera for a trip. Lost $ in the process as the 12Pro was only 5 months old (and seldom used during the winter months)... An "upgrade" to the 13 is not in my future unless I learn that the problem with the overheating and dark screen has been completely resolved and the camera has significant improvements. I've heard the upgrade to the 13 doesn't have many changes from the 12--I'll watch from a distance..

Battery health is a calculation performed based upon battery chemistry and newer batteries have more accurate battery life sensors than old phones.

For example, if you have a car whose gas gauge reads full until it's ¾ full, that doesn't mean it gets better mileage than a car whose gas gauge accurately shows levels between full and ¾.

Note Apple will replace your battery for free if the health drops to below 80% within your one year factory warranty.
