iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

So far this is happening with the 12 pro and the pro max. I called Apple support and they said it’s normal. Ummmmm. heck no it’s not. My 10 xs max was perfectly fine, no over heating or glitches. Stay with your 11 for 3 more months until they work out the bugs.

However, a new update IOS 14.4 just came out. Let’s see how this goes after the update. Stay tuned..... lol

It would be interesting to see if there is some common app some of you have or if perhaps when you set up your new phone from backup, you ported something over which is causing issues for you.

We have iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Max. Absolutely NO heating issues with either phone. We stream videos, music, etc., and the phones are no different than any phone we've ever had from Apple.

Yes I do contact Apple directly. I just wrote my experience here to share with other people who are experiencing the same problems as I have.

I would urge those users to call Apple also. But as you may know not all the Apple representative are good solving all problems ... so my writing of my experience is to share one possible reason / solution for the glitches I have been experiencing.

Wow, you must have some really bad leather in that Range Rover. Either that or you are greatly exaggerating. But seriously, if your phone is getting that hot, it should be taken to your Apple Store Genius Bar immediately. I'm sure Apple would be very interested in checking out a phone which get's so hot it could scar leather and yet not shut down. Temperatures that hot, should actually melt the insides of the phone.

I also have to have mine in low power mode if I don’t want it to get hot most of the time. Took it to the Genius Bar and they were going to swap out everything but the screen and the camera. Went to pick it up yesterday and they said there was an issue, and they ended up replacing the phone. Restored yesterday afternoon and as usual, when I got up this morning it was really hot within 10-15 minutes. These photos are from this morning. It is normal for this to happen if not on low power mode.

Got the 12 Pro Max about a month ago, and it overheats at least 5 times a day. I am not able to use my flashlight when I need it, I cannot take photos with flash when I want to, the facetime camera starts lagging out bc of how hot the phone gets. I upgraded from my XS Max because overheating became an issue but I do not believe it was worth the upgrade.

I actually tried deleting (properly removing and the) most apps except for thise deemed “safe” by the advice I got from Apple Support – and then restarting my device – but that did nothing to help solve the overheating and dimming problem.

I also updated to 14.4.2 which was (again) supposed to fix the issues but that did not help either. Th device is still overheating and dimming down the screen very quickly when I use it.

Time to contact Apple Support again. This has heen going on for more than 3 months now. The device has been couriered for repairs to Apple twice. Nothing seems to be found wrong with it but the problems persist anyhow.

Changing my SIM card didn’t help either.

It seems we’ve tried everything but nothing resolves the issues.

I don’t know what is to be done next.

My iPhone 12 PM also gets hot after light use. Apple Support says it is normal. I've done a little research now. I have reset the phone to factory settings and measured the temperature for a week, 5 times a day. I measured the rise in temperature after a minute of photography and light use Safari; and rise after 5 minutes of medium use. On the first day, the mean increase in temperature after medium use was 7.4 degrees Celsius. After a week this is more than 16 degrees Celsius.

Conclusions:

1. Immediately after a reset to factory setting, the phone heats up hardly

2. After a few days, the temperature increase after light and medium use and per day raise of temperature is higher

3. The increase after a week is more than 10 degrees Celsius after one minute of light use; the phone will then become more than 30 degrees Celsius.

4. After 5 minutes of use, the temperature rises more than 15 degrees Celsius and the phone becomes almost 40 degrees Celsius.

Note: research with Apple factory settings only; room temperature of 21 degrees Celcius!

Under normal room conditions iPhone is getting hot; so how about summer conditions?

I am also experiencing the same overheating. Its hot to hold and have notice while charging it is also very warm. Sometimes it gets so warm, min use, that it dims my screen even tho it reads that the screen brightness is all the way up. Im worried it will burn up because though it acts like a computer it doesnt have a mechanism to cool the device. We dont want the phones catching fire like other phones in the past. Apple is supposed to be a higher standard. If you take it in they do not give you a brand new device its always refurbished 🤦🏾‍♀️

Been to an Apple Store, online chat, then Best Buy. Diagnostics ran each time - no problem found. Diagnostics were run 3 times, and no problem found. Rep at Best Buy is suggesting it’s a software problem.

in addition to overheating and shutting down while on Zoom call, I may be having issues while on FaceTime call - video and sound breaks up, slightly warm to touch.

Also, while on chat was instructed to shutdown, but buttons did not respond. Even took phone out of Otter case to try to shutdown.

Then tried shutting down the following day and I could.

I think it’s a hardware “defect”. Now I was advise to go back to where I had purchased phone - a Verizon authorized dealer.

What next????

Since the issue is clearly heat dependent, I’d wait till the peak of summer…. Then we will know how widespread this really is. I can say I have 3 iPhone 12 in this household and all 3 behave exactly the same way and the screen becomes unreadable after just 10-20 mins outdoor in a 87F day (and all this while in the shade!!!). I’ve personally already submitted my complaint via feedback webpage. I know this is how issues get properly tracked at Apple and they can’t be dismissed!

Jun 11, 2021 9:32 AM in response to lobsterghost1

My own experience is that with around 85F weather or greater, even if my iPhone 12 is in pocket when I pull it out it is dimmed. I can tell it’s dimmed to max out anywhere from 50% to 85% brightness depending on how hot it is out there. the brightness white bar itself is all the way up at 100% just to be clear.

You can tell it is limiting the maximum brightness, by you simply moving the brightness slider down with your finger…you will see no change in brightness (because it’s already limiting at say 50%) unless you move the slider past and below the 50% mark.

This is all factually. Not conjecture.

Jun 13, 2021 7:32 AM in response to Gnolivos

Basically I took photos of the Brightness slider in different positions (circa 30 %, 50 %, 75 %, and 100 %) showing that there was no increase in the actual brightness of the screen going from 30 % to 100%.

Plus reference photos from another iPhone that doesn’t have the overheating problem and where you can see how the normal increase in brightness as the slider goes up towards 100 %.

When you compare these photos its clear as crystal that there’s something wrong with the iPhone 12 Pro that dims down when overheating.
